Being an amateur and profitable player over the last 5 years, I was drawn to this book. Not because of all the money that I have made, but because of all the money that got left behind on the table from bad beats, bad decisions, etc etc. I don't play online any longer. Until the US government gets its head out of its rear end, I would imagine I won't be playing online either. In an age where we are looking for more revenue for everything from roads to bullets, you would think all options are going to be on the table. Turns out sensible options that can have a positive and meaningful impact on tens of millions of people and generate billions in revenue for the governments of the world, isn't worth discussingBack to the book:While the same garbage still happens to me routinely. Not seeing an over pair for multiple sessions in a row, JJ running into an over pair 3x in a row in one session. Small pairs missing sets 30 and 40x in a row. Folks hitting trips on the turn against an over pair. Looking down at 38,94, and Q2 again and again. The book , its mindset and methodologies, and my willingness to work on this area of my game have certainly kept my head on straighter if not straight entirely. I can remember driving home in the past literally kicking myself writhing in the pain of anger and frustration. That doesn't happen any longer. I no-longer feel like the worst running player I have ever met. I do my best to analyze my play for what it is, and what it isn't. I don't play for anything but money, I'm not there for the rush or thrill its all about the results. The hundreds in cash I expect to EARN through proper decision making. While I can't control the results in any one hand or the cards that come to me, I can play my best given the cards and position in which I choose to play.I have read and re-read many sections of the book. I religiously write in my poker journal now, (Thank you Pages for iPhone, iPad, and Mac) and its available in the cloud on all my devices for review, Sometimes I add upon a session, or log just exactly how well i played a particular hand, or how badly I messed it up. Try this for ten sessions in a row. Then go back and read session 1. Your own perspective on the game is likely to change from just this exercise. If you play the game, you should read this book. Period. If you aspire for more, pay the 10BB, 4BB, 2BB, or half a BB that it will cost you for the book. Consider it a tip to a dealer that's going to pay you back 1000x over. Not only will this make you a better poker player, but it will make you a better person.Get it, Read it, Study it, Take Notes, Do warm ups, Write down in a journal, Do cool downs, and you will succeed. If the preceding looks intimidating, you might want to rethink this thing called poker. The game is a heck of a lot more complicated than that.
I have been struggling with two repeated leaks in my game, and this book has allowed me to understand the mental heuristics that I use to make and repeat poor decisions- and to begin correcting them...I almost did not write this as I don't want other players to improve on their serial callaholic ways (in my game)I am also being better informed with respect to more idiosyncratic behavioral finance issues ( a couple of investing issues )best book on what i might call the applied psychology of poker...and there a number of other booksthis book depicts processes that help you identify and eventually correct your tilts and leaks
Just an excellent help in dealing with the psychology of poker. Tilting control, coping with variance, and emphasis on ways of learning and incorporating newly learned material into your game are all major points of emphasis. Not just a bunch of pap about "Just relax" and other such nonsense, but rather it is a well organized strategy for improving your game and dealing effectively with the psychological problems that we all will face now and then. I give it my highest recommendation!
This is a must have for any serious poker player. I keep track of my (live) poker results, have now played over 8000 hrs live poker/I own ~14+ poker books. This is one of my top 1 or 2 books. Well written so it's an easy read. The vast majority of live small-stakes poker players lose, then they try to improve by bringing different concepts into their game (3-betting/ranging/bluffing,etc). Of course this can be helpful when done right, but the real reason there are so many losers in poker is not from lack of knowledge but from poor Mental Game. This book addresses that.
This is an excellent book for any Poker player from novice to full time professional. As a retired Mental Health Therapist, I can also say the insight presented in this book can be very helpful and useful to any person wishing to improve their cognitive behavior skills. Highly recommend.
While the focus is on mistakes made in the mental game while playing poker, this book could be helpful to anyone looking to improve their mental approach to nearly any field. I've stopped playing poker, but still try to apply concepts from this book to other parts of my life.
Jared Tendler’s book covers four key mental areas in depth of every poker players game: Tilt, Fear, Motivation, and Confidence. He provides proven tools and technique to fix problems in the long run—not just short-term patches. The mental game is incredibly important. This is a great read on a critical subject.
I've read this book several times now. Going back to different sections when needed.Even though, I'd say that volume 2 is better and more useful (to me, at least and to people who don't have severe tilt issues), this is still one of the best books a serious or aspiring poker player can read. However, this is not just an easy read-done-put away book. You need to either make notes as you go along, work with all the exercises he gives you, create sheets, and THINK how this information applies to you and how it can make you a better and stronger poker player.Since the edge is getting smaller and smaller, a lot of players are still underestimating the role of psychology at the tables and in their games. And there is where the edge lies. So, get ready and DO THE WORK if you don't like wasting time and you like your money to be spent well.
