About the Author

Maria Goodavage and Jake the Yellow-Lab-Sort-of-Dog have traveled throughout the state to check out some of the most dog-friendly parks, beaches, lodgings, and restaurants in the world. As part of their research, they've ridden on ferries, horse-drawn carriages, cable cars, and steam trains. They've visited drive-in movies, kitschy tourist attractions, and dog-friendly wineries. They've eaten at restaurants where dogs are treated almost like people (except they never get the bill). They've stayed at the best hotels, the worst motels, and everything in between. Jake's favorite saying: "You're not really gonna leave the house without me, are ya?" (This is usually accompanied by all his extra folds of neck skin drooping forward into his face, his floppy ears hanging especially low, his tail sagging dejectedly, and his big brown eyes looking remarkably tearful.) Since Jake is a dog without a driver's license (his furry feet don't reach the pedals), he relies on Maria, former longtime USA Today correspondent, to be his chauffeur. Maria is well qualified. She started chauffeuring dogs in 1989, when her intrepid Airedale, Joe, joined her during some of her travels for the newspaper. Joe and Maria sniffed out enough dog-friendly places that they came out with their first book, The Dog Lover's Companion to the Bay Area, shortly thereafter. The Dog Lover's Companion to California was born next. (Each book is now in its fifth edition!) After 13 years of traveling with Maria, Joe recently left for Dog Heaven, where all the cats are slow and no one tells you not to eat horse manure. Jake says he's proud to be following in Joe's pawsteps. Jake lives near the beach in San Francisco with Maria, her husband, and their daughter.

THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE KINDLE VERSIONI bought the e-version for a trip to San Diego on Thanksgiving 2012. Turns out the latest physical book edition is 2011, but the only Kindle version is 2008. I looked up 6 restaurants in the SD area, 4 had gone out of business, 1 had moved locations 2 years ago, and the sixth had removed their dog-friendly patio seating last year.In addition to out-dated information, this is not an e-book; it is a bunch of text and some images dumped into a file. Table of Contents items are links to chapters, and some businesses have websites that are web links, but there are no links for map references, or for mentions in a review of another nearby businesses or park location. For example, the beginning of each chapter has "Pick of the Litter", a list of the best of each sub-section. It will say something like "MOST DOG-FRIENDLY PLACES TO EAT", BOB'S DINER, (page 100). Well, thanks for giving me a page number for a thing that has no page numbers. The two stars I've awarded this title are based on the previous 2 editions I've owned (paper books, not kindle books): past books have been pretty helpful and on a few occasions it's really saved me a lot of time. I'd recommend the current, physical edition of this book, but I absolutely would not recommend the Kindle version right now. If the publisher does eventually update the Kindle version, I'd recommend that you wait until there are reviews so you can figure out if they've actually spent some resources on designing a usable e-book.

We were new to the Bay Area when we purchased this book and it has become our go-to weekend guide! We simply decide where we want to go and then read through the descriptions to see what suits our mood. On really hot days, we'll look for a place that is nestled in a eucalyptus grove or on the beach. We can also pick out where we want to eat before or after our adventure. I haven't been blown away by the restaurant recommendations, but the park descriptions have been great. We have two smaller dogs and the author is reviewing from a big dog owner's perspective. Again, we just look at the initial summation (how highly rated it is, if it's off-leash or not) and then we look through to see what our dogs will appreciate most. They aren't too interested in getting wet or muddy, but they do love exploring new landscapes with few people around. All in all, this book is absolutely wonderful and we've gotten a lot of use out of it. I only wish they had one for every area!

Great reference book for a road trip Monterey to San Simeon to Santa Barbara to Paso Robles. Good for dog friendly beaches and places to walk. I give it four stars only because it is a bit dated for lodging and restaurant listings.

We have only had our dog 5 months, now, and I can't say that I have tried alot of the places reviewed in this book.I can say that I am overwhelmingly grateful that someone took the time to compile this information. I used to poke fun at my friends who couldn't bare to leave their dog at home, and now I find myself feeling the same way! The prospects of what this book has to offer is delightful. The book is broken down into counties. You will find listings for parks, recreation, places to stay, restaurants, and diversions. Depending on what the county has to offer, those that are profiled are rated. The book is fun to use and humorous. It is reassuring to see so many places that are dog friendly, and I anticipate patronizing quite a few of the listings.

I've only had the chance to try a few of the places mentioned in the book but so far it's been good. I am really looking forward to trying out some of the northern California locations next year. Overall I would say this is a great resource for someone with fur children.

Gave this as a gift to my daughter and her family who have adopted a lovely Golden Retriever from rescue. They were thrilled as they love to camp and explore with their family. This book has lots of information which will help them plan their family outings and camping or overnight travel, since now they will be traveling with Charly, the Golden Retriever! As I dog lover myself, I know that you must plan ahead to travel with a pet...and even to hike with a dog, or go to the beach. Their are many pet friendly places and this bookis a great resource.

This is a great book if you are traveling in California with a dog. Has a lot of the dog parks listed. I appreciate the fact that each town that has something in it has a listings and there is a rating system through out the book so I can tell at a glance what we can do and what the author thought of it. There is also great advice on fun places to go with dogs. My Husband and I grab it and our dog on the weekend and go out and adventure with it. Highly recommend it.

My book arrived quicker than expected, thank you seller. My only issue is that it's pretty short on So. Cal stuff to do. About 3/4 of the book is all North of Santa Barbara and the rest is south of there. I LOVE northern California and visit the Sierras as often as I can, just wish there was more about So Cal. It's a nice book tho, easy to read and find info.

Since 1971, Major League Baseball has recognized a player who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual’s contribution to his team. In 1973, that award was renamed to honor the memory of Roberto Clemente.Few writers could do justice to the legend of Roberto Clemente. David Maraniss is one of those writers and he penned a wonderful biography of Mr. Clemente. Published in 2006, Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball’s Last Hero, is four books for the price of one. There is the Clemente as a Hall of Fame-worthy ballplayer narrative. There is the ubiquitous story of race relations in America from the mid-1950’s to 1972, as experienced by Clemente, a Puerto Rican-born professional athlete. There is the personal portrait of Clemente as a husband, father, teammate, humanitarian and, depending upon your perspective, either an athlete obsessed with his physical status or a hypochondriac. And, finally, there is the tragic story of Clemente’s last day, citizen of the world coming to the aid of Nicaraguan earthquake victims.Clemente had few peers as a Major League outfielder, but those peers either played in much larger markets (Willie Mays, Duke Snider and Mickey Mantle played for New York teams) or had a statistical advantage in the categories that mattered most to casual fans and sportswriters (Henry Aaron and Frank Robinson). His team, the Pittsburgh Pirates, finished in the middle of the pack most seasons, although they did win two World Series titles during Clemente’s tenure. In the mid-1950’s, Jim Crow was still in force in Fort Myers, Florida, the spring training home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Clemente, and the other African-American and Latino players, had to eat and sleep apart from their white teammates. As Wendell Smith, an influential black sportswriter, wrote in the Chicago American newspaper: “…the vicious system of racial segregation in Florida’s hick towns condemns you to a life of humiliation and ostracism…You cannot live with your teammates. You cannot eat the type of food that your athletic body requires. You cannot get a cab in the mornings to take you to the ball park, unless it happens to be Negro-driven…”Clemente would return to Puerto Rico after each MLB season where he would play on or manage a Winter League team. He would become an inspiration and role model for the next generation of Caribbean ballplayers, including Manny Mota and Matty Alou.Maraniss’ literary genius is on full display in the writing of the final four chapters of the book. Non-baseball issues – a devastating earthquake in a faraway land, aviation regulations ignored, the underworld of tramp airplanes and pilots for hire, an ambitious relief effort undertaken – shape Clemente’s last hours. In the aftermath of the plane crash that claimed Clemente's life, Maraniss wrote, with great poignancy: “…at the end, after his people by the thousands lined the Atlantic shore in expectation that Clemente would walk out of the sea…finally, on a coral reef a mile east of Punta Maldonado, they found one sock, and Vera knew it was Roberto’s. One sock, that’s all, the rest to sharks and gods.”

The intricacies of Roberto Clemente’s baseball career and life are too often overshadowed by his superb achievements and tragedy. This narrative fleshes out the passionate man and highlights his determined pursuit for social equality, and recognition for his contribution to the teams he played on. He could be blunt and frustrated, yet he felt people didn’t pay enough attention to what he did well. He was generous and had incredible hopes to enrich the lives of others by making sport evenly accessible. Clemente was a fine athlete and a remarkable human being.Nicholas R.W. Henning – Australian Baseball Author

Passionate, compassionate, complex and proud, Roberto Clemente was a great baseball player. As David Maraniss explains in this very good biography, there is ample reason why Clemente is still an icon among Latin players, and while his tragic death on a relief mission is part of his idolization, he was so much more than just someone with raw, God-given skills to excel in all facets of the game. A man who seemed to dance to his own drummer, but not obnoxiously so, he was somehow much more thoughtful about life in general, concerned not just about his place in the game, but his place among men.The press, at least generally, did not treat him with respect, and quoted him often in the dialect of his accented English. As it did with other Latin players, there was a constant attempt to Americanize him. I recall having baseball cards in the late 1950's that labeled him "Bob Clemente". The Cubs' television broadcaster in those days always referred to him as "Bobby". Playing in Pittsburgh, a small market, he was underrated nationally as a player until he thrust himself centerstage and dominated the 1971 World Series. He resented not being placed in the upper strata of ballplayers of his era, had his pride sometimes mistaken for arrogance, played through injuries and illness, and made the game look easy, even when he was furiously hustling FOR a ball down in right field and rifling the sphere plateward to throw out a runner, gifted with the finest outfield arm I ever saw.My father's friend knew Clemente, and took me to the ballpark when the Pirates were in town, promising me an introduction. I was on crutches at the time, having had surgery to reduce my limp from cerebral palsy. I was too wide-eyed and shy to say much, but I remember the gentleness in his eyes and the encouraging smile. He cared about people, especially disadvantaged children, chose his friends, baseball types and otherwise without regard to race or status, and, as revealed in the book, wanted to practice the healing arts after he left the game. His death, caused by a mechanically flawed airplane that should never have taken off, leaves us wondering what great deeds he might have accomplished had he been given a normal life span. Lots of ballplayers these days have charitable hearts. Clemente did not just set standards on the field, but off it as well.

This book has been mentioned to me and I have seen it cited in other books so I decided to read it. Unfortunately it left me with mixed feelings. While there is some useful information, parts of the book are speculative and Stein seems to want to marry Jesus and Reiki to Buddhism. In parts of the books Stein comes off as a bit of a loose cannon. Some of her advice makes you wonder. For example there is a table for emotional sources of disease and for migraines the source is "anger and perfectionism, frustration" and under it advises "masturbate to stop." I believe that Stein's heart is in the right place and she is well meaning, but I take this book as her personal journey and the advice with a grain of salt. I think of it as a supplemental guide with some useful parts, but I wouldn't want to use it as a teaching guide nor would I say it lives up to the its title as a complete guide.

My reiki teacher had me read this book because, as she put it, "If someone who knows very little about reiki thinks you haven't read it, they'll consider your training to be flawed because this is the only book people with casual knowledge of reiki are aware of." Time has proven her right. This is an interesting read if you've already had reiki training, but it's been the introduction to reiki for thousands of people, which is problematic. It's worth keeping in mind that you'll see a lot of One True Wayism about the meanings and purposes of the symbols out there ("The class *I* paid a grand for is the Only True Reiki!"), but what can't be denied is that there is an enormous amount of material in this book that has absolutely nothing to do with reiki, and someone who comes into reading it not knowing how to filter those things will come away with a severely distorted view of the practice and the philosophy behind it.I'm not a "purist" by any means, just to clarify the point. I've used reiki in conjunction with shamanism and fofo for many years. But when I set out to teach someone reiki, that's all I teach them -- no personal additions or other methods or philosophies unless a student wants to learn that and has finished the study in reiki first. I wish Stein had written with that goal in mind, but the book isn't entirely valueless as long as you go into it aware of what you're getting into.

I learned Reiki from this book and have decided to use William Rand's manuals from the International Center for Reiki Training instead when I teach. Stein uses gendered language that at times seems anti-male, and I did not want to make male students uncomfortable in my classes, as much as I support female empowerment. Reiki is for everyone and a manual should be approachable and inclusive!I also choose to avoid using the nontraditional symbols that are included in this book. I requested Takata's original symbols from the ICRT and use those. I want to use the symbols closest to the ones used by Usui.

I was attuned to all three levels of Usui Reiki (Master level in Usui), and given some materials then, but the Master (Mistress?) who attuned me also encouraged learning from every source possible. I bought this and I'm glad I did. Stein researches and gives history and her unique viewpoint and experiences. She is also all about practical instruction and suggestions, showing and telling about the Reiki symbols, et cetera. I find myself referring back here often. When a Reiki 1 I attuned asked for guidance on giving her first treatment session, I ended up discussing the positions and procedure based largely on Stein's illustrations and description (the Reiki 1 has a copy of this book as well). Some Reiki folks who follow a more traditional (American-traditional that is) approach dislike sharing the information this way. They think it should be limited and controlled. I agree with Stein's assessment that the need for healing in the world is greater than ever before and we need all the healers in action we can get. The book itself states it is not a substitute for attunement, so any criticism on that basis is misplaced. It is a beautifully done introduction and reference work that every Reiki (and those interested in becoming one) would do well to read and keep handy.

Some people swear by this book and the author gets a lot of credit for putting Reiki in the hands of more people as its founder, Mikao Usui, intended. Ms. Stein had to come by her training piecemeal and has clearly done more with hers than others with more thorough Western "Traditional" training. To me it seems unfortunate though that she mixes Reiki up with her own home brew of goddess worship. In my opinion that's misleading, however unintentional. Not only is Wicca and its derivatives NO part of any Japanese Buddhist path to enlightenment, but one of Mikao Usui's greatest achievements may have been to keep Reiki from dumbing down and turning into just another religious practice. In Reiki one experiences truth, not submits to indoctrination. Everyone who add bells and whistles and rust undercoatings to Reiki just does not get how or more importantly why Japanese culture places such a premium on elegant simplicity. Power is hidden in Reiki's original simplicity. Less is more. More is mere excess baggage. Most of what you pay for in many Reiki classes in the West today would be unfamiliar to it's founder. Only in such an atmosphere could this book sell very well and it does little to clear it. I believe she errs out of innocence here. I found her manual for teachers far more useful.

This book is inappropriately titled. The title should be "Beyond Essential Reiki." While it does include essential reiki information, the book is really more of the author's personal odyssey into all manner of things that actually go way beyond what is typically known as essential reiki. It is more like a grafting of essential reiki into everything the author has explored in the various approaches to healing and the acquiring of knowledge from the spiritual realm. This book is not for those who are interested in focusing on reiki essentials. In fact because of the author’s disrespect for the reiki tradition, it really isn’t for anybody.

"Avoid all methods with a high failure rate." ~Timothy FerrissWhen I bought the Kindle version of this book I was not thinking that anyone could get the perfect body in four hours. I was however curious as to why this book was a bestseller. It turns out that Timothy Ferriss writes in a very entertaining way and has some interesting methods for losing weight and gaining muscle. There are also chapters on swimming and baseball.Yes this book does seem designed mostly for men and the chapter on sex focuses mainly on giving females pleasure. Unlike other people I did not find this section offensive. I guess I just thought Timothy Ferriss' method of learning about women was a little controversial. The section of the book I found most intriguing was the diet section. To be honest it sounds a lot like the Atkins diet. I wish there had been more information and more food choices. Timothy Ferriss keeps it really simple. You basically eat vegetables, beans, meats and fish. You can't eat white carbs, fruits, sugary drinks, oats or dairy. You can however have cream in your coffee or tea. He then encourages you to have one cheat day. On this day you can eat whatever you want. This of course may cause you to gain weight again especially if you binge. One woman described in this book gained a ton of water weight after her binge day. So maybe go light on your cheat day?Timothy Ferriss talks a lot about supplements. While he gives brief descriptions and instruction on how much to take I'd still research this further and maybe talk to a doctor. His extra section on Vitamin D is enlightening. After reading this book you may start eating almonds to increase your sex drive or put cinnamon and vanilla in your coffee instead of sugar. There are only a few recipes in this book and that is a pity because including a lot of recipes for the prescribed slow-carb diet would have been really useful to the reader. For some people this book is going to be a bit confusing. The reason is because each chapter is dedicated to a certain goal. In one chapter being a vegetarian is encouraged but if you want to sleep better you should eat a ribeye steak. With the Kindle book you might think you have finished the book when you come to "Closing Thoughts." However there are a bunch of bonus chapters at the very end of the book after the Appendices and Extras. As far as exercises go there are pictures and instructions. Just, the exercises are spread out throughout the book so you can pick and choose what you want to do to get various results. This book did make me rethink what I'm eating and made me interested in doing kettlebell workouts. The author advises you not to read this book from start to finish but that is easiest when reading the Kindle version. While reading this book some of my suspicions were confirmed and I did learn quite a few new things. There really is something for everyone and you are sure to discover something new.~The Rebecca Review

TLDR: I'm 37. After following the diet, total cholesterol 165, triglycerides 386. Not on diet: Cholesterol 286, Triglycerides 1800. The diet works and it's super simple.A friend of mine recommended this book after being on the diet. I was really skeptical about the claims in the book. I've got metabolic syndrome and I've been on statins for a long time. I'm by no means generally super fat or unhealthy in terms of diet or weight: 5'11 200 lbs and I don't eat a lot of junk. A large part of this is genetics.I read the chapters of the book focused on the diet and honestly I rolled my eyes and said things like "no way" but I decided to give it a shot. I followed an even more simplified form of the book because I have 2 kids, my wife and I work fulltime and I'm always tired and have no time. I went to costco and bought 2 types of canned beans, stew meat, and frozen costco vegetables. I slow cooked the stew meat by literraly unloading the package into the slow cooker and salting it and letting it cook for 5 hours once a week. I put it in tupperware to keep for the week. For a meal I'd open a can of beans (used about half a can per-meal), pour out some frozen vegetables and microwave them for 3 minutes, then combine it all and heat for another minute. I'd have a meal ready in about 5 minutes. For breakfast I'd eat the same thing except I'd eat about half as much meat and add about 4 eggs. I used salt or sriracha chili paste for flavor.I ate that 6 days a week, 3 times a day, and on Saturday I'd eat like an absolute pig. After 6 weeks I had my blood tested again and the results are better than when I was on statins. I also just generally felt better. I also lost like 15 pounds or so but that wasn't really my focus. So the claims in the book about the effects on cholesterol are completely true as crazy as it sounds. Highly recommend this.

Love this book, gift it often.I've lost significant weight on its protocol (went from 28%MBI to 16% in 10weeks)It's improved my sex life - cannot speak more highly of kettlebell swings for this and belowMass gains were meh but still good for the total gym timesleep manipulation didn't work for me but know it has for othershelped a ton with injury recovery

I absolutely love this book. It is broken down into easy to understand sections with straightforward information which is easy to understand. I have had good results after implementing some of the authors recommendations. The slow carb diet and cold showers are, in my experience, especially beneficial. The book is much larger than I anticipated, apparently, I ignored the page count when I placed my order. Don't think of this resource as a book that you read cover-to-cover. You can read it however you want but I have found it most useful as a reference book that I can consume topic-by-topic.

Good book, lost a lot of weight quickly. I lost 4-5 lbs a week easy, had a ton more energy then ever before. Unfortunately I returned to my evil ways and gained it all back over a few months but I know that when I go back on this diet I will lose it quickly again.

At 425 pounds, I realized I had to do something drastic. A good friend of mine knew someone on the "slow-carb" diet that is outlined in this book, and he had lost 100 pounds in a year. I bought the book, thought about it a lot, wondered if I could do this long-term...and decided I could. Here I am, less than 1.5 years later, and I've lost almost 150 pounds. There's no special food to buy, no mandatory supplements, no added costs other than the book. There are tons of online resources to augment what's outlined in the chapters. I can't even begin to tell you how much this has changed and continues to change my life. I'm so greatful to Tim Ferriss and Amazon for providing this book.UPDATE: After 2.5 years, I lost 250 pounds. While no plan/lifestyle change is right for everyone, this worked very well for me.

A measure of a great biography may be the extent to which it elicits a desire to learn more about the subject and read his or her writings. With this extensive biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Eric Metaxas has certainly accomplished both, as far as I'm concerned. I think I first became aware of Bonhoeffer while I was in college, through his Discipleship, or The Cost of Discipleship as most English translations title it. Other than than, I had no more than a vague, one or two sentence idea of his involvement with the plot to kill Hitler. That did become a defining element of his life, as it lead to his execution, but, as Metaxas tells the story, there is much more to the man, his ministry, and his work in public and church life.As a young pastor and theologian during the Nazi's rise to power Bonhoeffer opposed the German church's easy assent to the dictates of the Nazi party, including excluding anyone of Jewish heritage from ministry positions, and supplanting the message of the cross with the message of the twisted cross of Nazism. As a leader in the confessing church movement, and as head of a new seminary founded as an alternative to the Nazi-tainted seminaries of the German church, Bonhoeffer rose in status and became a target for the Gestapo.I think I would have liked Bonhoeffer. Maybe we can hang out in heaven. While telling Bonhoeffer's story, Metaxas does a beautiful job of portraying life in Germany in the years leading up to and including the rise to power of Hitler and the Nazi party. Bonhoeffer's family, not rich but certainly among the intellectual and cultural elite of Germany, had close connections in academic, political, and military circles. For the most part, these groups did not welcome the rise of Nazism; they hoped for its quick demise, and bemoaned its unlikely entrenchment in German politics and governance. That surprised me as much as anything: in spite of the powerful opponents to Nazism, and there was much, Nazis managed to gain unprecedented power. Many common Germans, not just Jews, opposed the Nazis. I can't help but think most of Germany was complicit in Nazi crimes, but Metaxas makes it clear that many opposed them, even in the military.I particularly enjoyed Metaxas's portrayal of Bonhoeffer as a defender of the faith against theological liberalism and against Nazi attempts to dilute the work of the church. The ready acquiescence of the German church distressed him. Neither was he very impressed with the academic theology he encountered in the U.S. during his stay in New York, at Union Theological Seminary. Of the students, he had this to say: "There is no theology here. . . .They become intoxicated with liberal and humanistic phrases, laugh at the fundamentalists, and yet basically are not even up to their level." He also had a hard time finding good preaching: In New York they preach about virtually everything, only one thing is not addressed, or is addressed so rarely that I have as yet been unable to hear it, namely, the gospel of Jesus Christ, the cross, sin and forgiveness, death and life. . . . The sermon has been reduced to parenthetical church remarks about newspaper events. . . . I have heard only one sermon in which you could hear something like a genuine proclamation, and that was delivered by a negro.Bonhoeffer himself has been, at times, championed by theological liberals, due in part to some fragmentary writings that he left behind, the unfinished nature of which lead to some misinterpretation. On religionless Christianity, an idea which, Metaxas points out, has "led to a terrific misunderstanding of Bonhoeffer's theology," Eberhard Bethge said the "isolated use and handing down of the famous term 'religionless Christianity' has made Bonheoffer the champion of an undialectical shallow modernism which obscures all that he wanted to tell us about the living God." Contrary to his liberal interpreters, Bonhoeffer's theology, Metaxas writes, "was dedicatedly Bible centered and Christ centered."As Hitler's power increased and life for Jews and the confessing church (not to mention the disabled and many other groups), Bonhoeffer had the opportunity to return to New York for an extended stay as a lecturer. He could easily have stayed in the U.S. for the years, perhaps even through the duration of the war. But Bonhoeffer knew his place and his work was in Germany. He joined the Abwehr, military intelligence, and worked as double agent. Besides working on behalf of the church, he helped smuggle Jews out of the country and was a part of the plot to kill Hitler. (This plot was portrayed in the movie Valkyrie, but I don't remember that Bonhoeffer was named in the movie. Obviously it involved many in the military, as well as many civilians.) I was interested to read about Bonhoeffer's struggle with the ethical issues of his work. Lying, deceiving his government, even plotting to kill a head of state became justifiable in light of the actions of the Nazi government.Bonhoeffer was arrested not because of his involvement with the assassination plot, but because of his covert intelligence work. Later, however, after the near-miss with Hitler, the Fuhrer wanted vengeance on everyone he could find who was involved. Bonhoeffer's name made the list, and he was hanged only days before the Allies claimed victory, and weeks before Hitler took his own life.Metaxas's biography, a terrific read with just the right blend of historical background and detail about Bonhoeffer's life, renewed my interest in Bonhoeffer. On my shelf I have copies of The Cost of Discipleship, Life Together, and Ethics. I read the first two, but I'm not sure I ever tackled the third. I'm inspired to do so now, and to wonder what Christendom lost with Bonhoeffer's early death. What more can we ask of a biography: a great writer writing a great story about a great man. Worth a read.

I had never heard of Bonhoeffer until this book came out. It took me a while to get around the Kindle version I picked up on a special price and read the book. But when I saw Mr. Metaxas recently on Cspan I was reminded I hadn't read this biography yet. I have read some of his other books and enjoyed them and this is no different after reading it through quite rapidly.Of course Bonhoeffer is a sad story though inspiring because he died for his beliefs. But the book provides a great and very readable account of his life and story. Yes, Bonhoeffer is a religious story and a religious man that offered witness to the terrible regime that enveloped Germany from 1933 - 1945 (I dare not mention it because the reviews gets flagged) and he ultimately died because of his principled opposition. But this is such a well-written and worthwhile book anyone should and can read this and unless that have no soul, they can't help but be interested and inspired. Wow. Terrific. Highly recommended.

I love this book! Anyone wanting to learn about Bonhoeffer and German church history, as well as WWII, will love this book! As a WWII history buff , and a Christian with some German heritage, I learned some things about Germany and the German church before and during WWII that I didn't learn in secular history books. This book highlights the fact that the way that WWII came about was due to the failings of the Christian German church. To be a Christian in name only or mostly is not the same as having a relationship with Christ. The German church was passive and allowed the love of their country to mix with their Christian faith, or override it, and so Hitler took advantage of it and thus we had WWII. I really believe now that if the German church had had a real revival and real relationship with Christ, and stood up for what the Bible , what Jesus, taught then Hitler would never have had a chance to bring about what he did. Any country's failings are due to the failings of the church. This book would be great for any apologetics thinker/reader as well as WW1 and WWII history buffs.

Napoleon Hill could have written this book right now in the 21st century. It is that relevant. By outlining the need for clear goal setting and delineating the right steps to achieving your dreams, this book will change your life. Guaranteed!

Amazon has done us a huge disservice by lumping all the reviews for the various "original" versions of this book together. The version I purchased (black cover with money on the bottom, kindle version) is riddled with errors where the publisher evidently SCANNED the book in and then didn't bother to edit the results. Page numbers appear randomly in the middle of paragraphs, "m" appears where clearly "in" was intended and in some cases paragraphs just end in the middle of a sentence. This is a great book but some of the publishers have done a terrible job reproducing it and Amazon isn't helping by grouping very different copies together in the same review group.I hope to update this review when I find a less crappy copy of this book, but avoid the version with the black cover with money on the bottom. (See pictures)

First, i was thinking that this book will only help me in the performance part of my life, by giving tips, habits and principles of the most succesfull people on the planet. But my image of the book changed when i read all of it. It helps also on how to become an incredible person, how to treat people and how to see all that happens to you in a different way.Second, it talks about BELIEVING, it says that in order to reach whatever you seek you first have to believe and have faith in your abilities, in the plan that God has for you and to BELIEVE IN YOU!! Also it teaches you that you need to have faith, persistance and very BIG BIG dreams. For all of you that are reading this review i want to tell you THAT YOU CAN DO IT!! YOU WERE BORN TO BE GREAT!! But people dont believe it because of what other people says about them but ignore the negative people and STAY LOCKED WITH YOUR DREAM, DONT LET ANYONE TELL YOU WHAT TO DO OR HOW TO THINK. IGNORE THEM AND STAY FOCUS ON YOUR PURPOSE. I WANT TO TELL YOU THAT I BELIEVE IN YOU AND I LOVE YOU. YOU CAN MAKE IT!!!!!!!!!!

I have read over 50 self-help books in my life so far. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill is in my TOP 5! In fact, I personally know two millionaires (one being a family member) and both HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book! The family member originally moved to the United States in his early 30's and hardly spoke a word of English. Actually started off delivering pizzas. One day he was gifted the book Think and Grow Rich by a very wealthy customer. He devoured this book and read it over 20 times! A decade later he became a millionaire (Net Worth: ~10 Million USD). True story. In fact, if you do your research you will learn that Think and Grow Rich has produced the most millionaires out of any self-help product.FRAUD ALERT ABOUT CLAIMED "UNABRIDGED" VERSIONS:Yes, this is an amazing book! However, there are so many versions of this book. Amazon clumps all of the reviews of the various editions in to one group which adds to the confusion. The BEST version is the 1937 ORIGINAL. Many publishers of this book claim that there version is the 1937 ORIGINAL UNABRIDGED. Then you read the introduction and find out that the publisher revised it, abridged or "modernized" it. Thus making the original claim FALSE/LIE! Most interestingly, these revised/updated versions remove essential key words such as the word VIBRATIONS. The removal/substitution of this word completely changes the context of the sentence. I am a fairly spiritual person and reading the original unmodified 1937 version was MUCH MORE PROFOUND to me. In fact, so much of an affect that in 6 months of reading the original my salary increased by 50% WHILE working from home 98%. Naturally, I gave away all of the other versions I hadI spent over 10 HOURS reading through many comments on Amazon and Google. My goal was to find truly REAL 1937 ORIGINAL UNABRIDGED versions. Here are the BEST FORMATS of the ACTUAL REAL 1937 ORIGINAL UNABRIDGED VERSIONS of Think and Grow Rich:Kindle Version: Think and Grow Rich: The Original 1937 Unedited Edition - Created by the OFFICIAL Napoleon Hill Foundation. Unfortunately, their physical book format is terrible. I think they simply photocopied the original and then tried to fit it on each page. The results, the font is too small and there is a TON of wasted white space for the margins. It is simply awful to read even though the their intentions were good. The most readable physical book version I have found is by Melvin Powers linked below.Physical Book Version: Think and Grow Rich - Facsimile Edition that is by forward Melvin Powers.Enjoy!P.S. I would be grateful if someone could point me to a good quality audiobook that is 100% for certain is a narration of the ACTUALLY REAL 1937 ORIGINAL UNABRIDGED VERSION.

Despite the age of this book, I found the underlying lessons it contained to be highly relevant to my life today. The most valuable ideas I gathered from this book:1) You cannot acquire great wealth without a concrete plan for attaining that wealth, a serious passion that compels you to act on your plan continuously, and great faith that your plan will allow you to succeed.2) Many of the world's greatest achievers were passionate to the point of obsession, and in order to emulate their success you must cultivate a desire until it becomes an obsession.3) Material success does not come solely as a result of knowledge acquisition, but rather from one's ability to organize and transform specialized knowledge such that it can be delivered to a wide audience in the form of a product or service.4) Persistence often makes the difference between success and failure. It is a state of mind that is essential to success and can be overcome through effort.5) One of the common attributes of highly successful people is the ability to reach decisions quickly and to change them slowly. Most of us are the opposite.

Finally! a clean and unabridged edition. I had to purchase two other editions before finding this one. It is clean, good size font, and true to the original 1937 wording. Published by Dauphin Publications ISBN 978-1939438256. Nice job!
