I have finished “You, Life After Painâ€, listened to the webinar, and looked at the bonus materials. i have been seeking information on Chronic Pain for years now. I have taken a course put out by the Mayo Clinic, a course done through Coursera, both of which had sound guidance; sought and found help through Brain Plasticity ideas. Dr. Kuttner has brought forth a very readable, usable, and in my opinion, an important part of literature on Chronic Pain Management. It would be a serious mistake to dismiss any of his suggestions off hand. I particularly appreciate the way the book explains/explores the function of the pain system. I believe it is so very important to think in terms of a pain system that is unique to each individual person and that it works with or without current physical damage. I like the way it is explained clearly how messages are sent along the nervous system and how they can go wrong. Another appreciation i have is that the book is clear that it may take considerable time and dedication to re-map or re-educate your system. Or… you may not need a lot of time and a particular technique is there for you to use and benefit from immediately. I am already loaning it out to loved ones.
This book brings together a melange of chronic pain theories, reflecting those of various other authors, for example, Kabat-Zinn's mindfulness work, Michael Brown's "The Presence Process", John Sarno's psychosomatic pain work, and even Travell and Simons's trigger point therapy work. I have found all of these various proposals helpful and valid in different ways, and it would be nice to have them combined into a cohesive whole. This book makes a valiant effort, I think, to do that, but in the end I found it to be more of a collection of assorted (possibly related) information, most of which I largely already knew. That doesn't make it bad; it could be a good introduction for someone not yet familiar with other, similar literature. I especially liked that it is easy to read and explains even technical physiological issues in ways that a layman can understand.
Update at 6 weeks. I used no Ibuprofen this week. Good luck to you.Update at 4 weeks. I rarely feel pain or think about my leg now. I used one Ibuprofen couple days this week, mainly to avoid panic about what might happen with my leg. This Life After Pain book is solving my leg pain. I used to think, I might become Grandpa with a cane but not anymore. I was very, sore and limped for about a year and a half, until I read this book. I am so glad for the ideas in this book. I am writing this because, I believe this book can help you also.At two weeks. I didn't know about amplified pain before I read this book. My leg has been sore from weight lifting for a year and a half. Some days I used 3 Ibuprofen, 3 times a day. Two books are helping; You, Pain Free: 6 Keys to Break Free of Chronic Pain and Get Your Life Back , Pain Free: A Revolutionary Method for Stopping Chronic Pain. I am using less and less ibuprofen and lifting better.
This book explains how and why pain turns into chronic pain, which can extend into other areas of the body, in very clear and easy to understand terms. I suffer from chronic migraines and the pain travels all down the right side of my body. No doctor has been able to explain why I get pain all down my right side up until now. Dr. Kuttner gives a lot of different techniques to try to stop chronic pain. I only just finished the book but have been trying the one I believe he calls mirroring. Basically I tell the right side of my body that it is supposed to feel like the left side of my body which is pain free and I have had some success with this. I will continue to work with this and try some of his other techniques too. I have been following Dr. Kuttner on line for several years and he has given me a lot of useful insights into pain. I highly recommend the book to anyone suffering from chronic pain or who knows someone who is.
This book, along with many others, including those from Dr. Sarno, are invaluable to those who deal with chronic pain, and as one who has been in that boat for the last 25 years, it brings hope and a step-by-step instruction guide to help. Not only does Dr. Kuttner explain about pain amplification, he also goes more in-depth as to why the pain system malfunctions, and how you can stop it, even after decades of chronic pain.I have been doing much of what he has written here and it does work! Consistency and belief are the keys, along with the major 6 keys he lists in the book. If you do these with an open mind, you too can be pain-free.
This book is amazing! Dr Kuttner's teachings have changed my life. If you practice the methods he's sharing in his book it will have a lasting effect on your ability to manage your pain until you get to the point where you don't even have to think about it. I've read several books including Dr Sarno's that have a similar concept regarding the connection between our brains and our pain. But Dr Kuttner's book really walks you thru several methods and practices to help you change those patterns and connections to help you break the pain cycle. I've bought several copies to share with friends.
