Review

“A massive product of exact and well-informed scholarship . . . with landmark significance. . . . I give this book top marks for its range of solid scholarship, cogency of argument, warmth of style, and zeal for the true glory of God. I recommend it most highly.”―J. I. Packer, Board of Governors' Professor of Theology, Regent College“I cannot imagine that this book could have been published twenty-five years ago: there were not at that time enough well-informed theologians working in the Reformed heritage to produce a volume of such clarity and competence. Whatever side you hold in this debate, henceforth you dare not venture into the discussion without thoughtfully reading this book, which, mercifully, makes argument by stereotype and reductionism a great deal more difficult. Above all, this book will elicit adoration as its readers ponder afresh what Jesus achieved on the cross.”―D. A. Carson, Research Professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School; Cofounder, The Gospel Coalition“The topic is worthy enough. Yet the lineup of contributors to this volume makes this, in my view, the most impressive defense of definite atonement in over a century. Beyond rehearsing traditional arguments, first-rate historical, biblical, and systematic theologians bring fresh angles and exegesis to bear. From Heaven He Came and Sought Her is a gift that will no doubt keep on giving for generations to come.”―Michael Horton, J. Gresham Machen Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Seminary California; author, Justification (New Studies in Dogmatics)“This is the definitive study. It is careful, comprehensive, deep, pastoral, and thoroughly persuasive.”―David F. Wells, Distinguished Senior Research Professor, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary; author, The Courage to Be Protestant: Truth-Lovers, Marketers and Emergents in the Postmodern World“There is a conventional wisdom that seems to believe definite atonement is the weakest of the five heads of doctrine confessed at the Synod of Dort. But you may come away from this book believing it is the strongest, in its historical attestation, biblical basis, and spiritual blessing. Written by first-rate exegetes and theologians, this book covers all the difficult issues and emerges with a highly persuasive and attractive case. Highly recommended!”―John M. Frame, Emeritus Professor of Systematic Theology and Philosophy, Reformed Theological Seminary“For whom did Christ die? This volume makes a fresh and impressively comprehensive case for definite atonement as the answer true to Scripture. It shows convincingly, through multi-authored contributions, (1) that the issues of the extent of the atonement and its nature cannot be separated―penal substitution, at the heart of why Christ had to die, stands or falls with definite atonement; and (2) how definite atonement alone provides for a gospel offer of salvation from sin that is genuinely free. In engaging various opposing views on this much-disputed topic, the editors seek to do so in a constructive and irenic spirit, an effort in which they and the other authors have succeeded admirably.”―Richard B. Gaffin Jr., Emeritus Professor of Biblical and Systematic Theology, Westminster Theological Seminary“This book is formidable and persuasive. Those familiar with the terrain will recognize that the editors know exactly the key issues and figures in this debate. And none of the authors who follow disappoint. The tone is calm and courteous, the scholarship rigorous and relentless, the argument clear and compelling. This penetrating discussion takes into account the major modern academic criticisms of definite atonement (Barth, the Torrances, Armstrong, Kendall, and others) as well as more popular critiques (Clifford, Driscoll and Breshears). An impressive team of scholars adorns this subject and aims to help Christians toward a deeper gratitude to God for his grace, a greater assurance of salvation, a sweeter fellowship with Christ, stronger affections in their worship of him, more love for people and superior courage and sacrifice in witness and service, and indeed to propel us into the global work of missions with compassion and confidence.”―J. Ligon Duncan III, Chancellor, CEO, and John E. Richards Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary“Whether you are sympathetic to or suspicious of definite atonement, this book will surprise you. Here are historical details, exegetical links, theological observations, and pastoral perspectives that are fresh and fascinating, even though there is also plenty that will prove controversial. From Heaven He Came and Sought Her offers the fullest and most nuanced treatment on definite atonement I know, and will richly add to the substance and quality of future conversations about the intent of the atonement. Whether you think that you agree or disagree with the authors, wrestling with these essays is well worth your time.”―Kelly M. Kapic, author, Embodied Hope; Professor of Theological Studies, Covenant College

The doctrine of Limited Atonement is truly one of the most overwhelming declarations of God's love for His people and sadly one of the most avoided and misunderstood declarations of The Bible. I cannot begin to express the detail and precision with which this teaching has been expressed and defined in this book. I have not often been challenged and driven to know what I know and why I know it as I have by reading this work. It took me nearly a year to truly dig into and digest From Heaven He Came and Sought Her, but I have grown richly in Christ from plowing through this masterpiece. I pray that many will find and read this insightful and delightful work. I want to personally thank the contributing author's for this timeless treasure, and will without hesitation place in on the top shelf of my libraryRomans 11:36

Whenever the topic of Calvinism comes up in my daily life, the most often stumbled upon point is the point of definite atonement. The doctrine of definite atonement is the truth that Christ, before the foundation of the world, chose to die for the elect and bare the wrath for only them. This is the doctrine that is always challenged, and it is a very good challenge! What does scripture have to say? What does Church History have to say?Enter From Heaven He Came and Sought Her: Definite Atonement in Historical, Biblical, Theological, and Pastoral Perspective. This is an amazing book! Theologians from John Piper to Sinclair Ferguson to Carl Trueman to Michael Haykin help make this one of the best books I have ever read. This volume looks at the doctrine of definite atonement by looking at the four major ways anyone should ever look at a doctrine; by looking at how it came to be through Church History, where it is in the bible, how it rounded out as a doctrine and how does it apply to practical ministry today. This is no small task either. With over 700 pages and 23 chapters, this book is quite the doozy, but it is well worth its weight in gold. The best part of this book has to be the historical sections on looking at the doctrine of the atonement from the church’s history. Haykin and Trueman’s chapters alone are well worth the price, for getting the insights from two of the best church historians in today’s church is just not something you will get in Seminary. The second best part of the book has to be the pastoral section. It is easy to just theoretically talk about the abstract concepts of different doctrines and such, but to apply it to the battlefield of pastoral ministry when you desperately need to know that Christ did not fail in his mission is unlike anything other to bring comfort to your soul. When you have two top-notch Pastor/Theologians like Piper and Ferguson, who have been in the trenches of pastoral ministry for decades, come and present how this doctrine applies to the ministry and brings comfort to the Pastor’s soul, it can’t get any better than that!I highly recommend this book for anyone who is exploring Calvinism or definite atonement and wants to finally come to a conclusion to where they stand when it comes to one of the most crucial doctrines of Reformed Theology.(I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.)

Definite atonement is one of those pesky doctrines that prove controversial. Ever since the formal response by the Dutch Calvinists at the Synod of Dort, the church has been wrestling with the finer points that concern the extent of the atonement. The first verse of Samuel Stone's majestic hymn, The Church's One Foundation is a clear statement of the doctrine of particular redemption:The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord; she is a new creation by water and the Word; From heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died.David and Jonathan Gibson borrow the preceding line from Stone's hymn to make an important theological assertion, namely - Christ paid for his sheep; he paid for his bride on the cross. In doing so, nothing was left to chance. Christ died for the sins of everyone who would ever believe. Hence, the authors set forth a well-reasoned and biblical case for the doctrine of particular redemption in their work, From Heaven He Came and Sought Her.Four sections deserve the attention of readers and make a compelling case for the doctrine under consideration.Section 1: Definite Atonement in Church HistorySection 2: Definite Atonement in the BibleSection 3: Definite Atonement in Theological PerspectiveSection 4: Definite Atonement in Pastoral PracticeEach section provides a stunning amount of biblical, exegetical, and theological doctrines which prop up this God-honoring doctrine. The depth of scholarship is remarkable and the theologians represented is nothing short of remarkable. David and Jonathan Gibson should be commended for assembling such a worthy group of scholars and addressing an issue that should come to the forefront of evangelical circles. From Heaven He Came and Sought Her defends the doctrine of definite atonement in crystal clear terms that honor our triune God and magnify the work of the Lord Jesus on the cross.

I believe in unlimited Atonement and thought this book was a well put together case for Limited Atonement. I love the history that is given as well as the graceful delivery of the position. I did not find any of the arguments to be persuasive, but I do believe that they helped me weed poor arguments out of my own understanding. Overall I would recommend this book to all sides of the debate. cheers!
