Such a wonderful, horrific, well written story, mixing fact and fiction, of the Great Hunger. I have read many, many books about this time and this is one of my favorites. Things were referred to that I had not seen discussed before, for example, how the terrible snows caused even more deaths and hardship. I don't recall the weather, other than rain, ever being mentioned, and certainly not deep, killing snows. I found the depiction of the area around Galway to be so descriptive and painful that it was almost as if I was there watching the suffering of the people. The way the Egans dealt with the tragedy of those around them, and the decisions they had to make, were gripping. Such a sorrowful time, but such a definitive, important part of Irish history. Anyone planning a trip to Ireland, or having ancestors from Ireland, or just simply wanting to know more about Ireland should read this book. Thank you, Charles, for shedding more light on this sad time. I'm now anxious to read the next installment!!
My 2X great-grandparents lived in various parts of Ireland during the famine. I have read the Famine Diaries, Paddy's Lament, and many others and I have been well aware of the sad and unbelivable horror of it all. This book however hits you in the face and punches you in the stomach by making it more personalized. From research I know that at least two of my families came from Cty. Mayo where this novel is written. This was a very emotional read for me. I cried through much of it but found it hard to put down. I was able to put myself in my beloved ancestors shoes and I appreciate them even more. This is a must read for anyone doing their Irish genealogy to pass on the history and courage of our ancestors. I am humbled when I realize that I was ever born at all. I have ordered all three of Charles Egan's novels and look forward to reading them.
This beautifully and evocatively written trilogy about the Irish famine of the mid-19th century grabbed me and wouldn’t let me go until I finished all three lengthy, fascinating, and meticulously researched volumes. The Killing Snows is the first book. Beware, Reader, you may be ensnared and unable, like me, to put down the series until you have devoured every compelling scrap of the tale of the Ryan family of County Mayo.
Just finished The Killing Snows....by Charles Egan, on my new Kindle Oasis 2 reader... Thank You so much Mr Egan, for all your research and I imagine your life's work. Was difficult to read, because my heart hurt for the beautiful, cultural, and intelligent people... Regardless, I felt if Ireland could go through this, why can't I read it? I've also visited throughout EU and Africa many places where mankind has suffered ... Not just through famines, but brutality...etc etc.. (Think Auschwitz–Birkenau, Budapest, and some parts of Africa) Thank you C.E. I didn't know until I finished your book, what over 25% of your parents beautiful country went through. xo
Stories of the famine years are so terrible ,but I have never seen it spelt out as in this book ! I am going to continue with the next book ! Fantastic read !!!
If you're Irish and have ancestors who came over during the famine, this is a fiction based upon truth novel, you will find very interesting. Twas very hard... what they went through...and it wasn't just about the potato famine. It was about poverty, a typhus plague, industrial exploitation, property rights, religious intolerance, as well as religious charity and so much more. And' while they did place some responsibility for the "troubles" on the British...it wasn't heavy handed. I highly recommend this novel and I am looking forward to the next book in the trilogy, "The Exile Breed ".
I just finished reading the 3 books of The Irish Famine Series by Charles Egan. Mr. Egan needs to be congratulated on writing such a moving, compassionate story of the Great Famine. Not only do you feel the unrelenting despair of the characters through all the trials and obstacles they faced during this very difficult time, but Mr. Evans weaves a story firmly rooted in historical events. Most people know about the potato blight and its devasting effects on the population, but Mr. Egan pulls together the many and varied threads that contributed to this calamitous event. Thank you, Mr. Egan for a well told story that needs, and deserves to be told. Erin go bragh!
Bought all three books by Charles Egan about Ireland and the potato famine and the fever. These books were so intense! I have never reqd anything about my Irish heritage before. These are historical novels. I will never think of Ireland in the same way again. Thank you,Charles, for writing these books. Will be passing them on to my interested friends and family members.
