Loved this book! If I could have given 6 stars, I would have. This book would provide you with a very well rounded approach to Data Science and by that I mean truly would give you a ride though all the aspects of this field versus showing you some regression algorithm using python and call it Data Science.Book has it all - not only it leverages probably the most favorite language (python) for its examples, it also goes in details in supporting tools and eco systems. For examples, Spark - Why create something when Spark is already here and we can just use it in our work.It covered NoSQL technologies to give readers enough information to get started and weighted pros and cons of each. I especially enjoyed reading ACID, BASE and CAP theorem sections. I am familiar with them and gave presentation on exact same topic few years ago and I enjoyed the read since it covered the important key points leaving me with nice warm feeling in my stomach that unaware readers will be in a good hands!During discussion of NoSQL, ElasticSearch was introduced and entire chapter was devoted on how to leverage search capabilities to provide us with valuable results... Search is something that ElasticSearch does best! Section about Damerau-Levenshtein was great. It made you think of dirty data that is present in the real world and how you deal with it (vs giving you example with perfectly clean and ready to use data)Speaking of real world experience - this book took a step back and instead of trying to be data science book and throwing cool python libraries at you, it talked about general approach in the real word when you deal with data science projects by trying to make you think of project's research goals - Why are we doing this? This was done to help you think and to help you pick the right solutions.Another example of real world problems was their chapter on dealing with big and i mean truly big data. In some sample program, you can surely play with tens of hundreds of sample records, but what do you do with gigs or more of data? while running production servers, you are not dealing with 2-3 lines of log entries, you deal sometimes with gigs! So I was very happy to see section that talked on how you can tackle problems like that.Authors did a great job in my opinion by cloning and making it available pywebhdfs package that would work with their example of the code (they did use now outdated hortonworks sandbox that made it hard to follow in few chapters, but it was not hard to figure out where menus/buttons were moved)A nice final touch that I felt was great was section on results visualization. How would you communicate what you found to others? will you point them at some hard to read print out, OR shows them a picture/graph that makes your findings easy to read?So... many many gems in this book that would really give you a great overview of the field of data science and would get you started not only in strictly academic / demo only way, but also in real life production environment.I definitely would be re-reading this book and recommending it to my colleagues!

I've only read through page 50, but I have already found several errors. A particularly egregious one occurs in the first code listing, in which a regression model is fit through the origin even though an intercept should clearly be present. The data for the regression model is created as follows: two predictors, let's say x1 and x2, are created from the uniform(0, 1) distribution. The response = 0.4 x1 + 0.6 x2 + error, where the error term is also distributed as uniform(0, 1). That being the case, the intercept should be close to 0.5, the mean of the uniform(0, 1) distribution. You may wonder what difference that makes. Well... if the correct model is used, the model coefficients end up being close to the actual coefficients used to create the data, namely 0.4 and 0.6, instead of 0.7658 and 1.1252 as shown in the text. In addition, R-squared for the correct model is about 0.3, a far cry from the "high" value of 0.893 reported by the authors.

This book is a great introduction into data science with step by step examples. The chapters take business problems and show how to find and display solutions. The authors put together a data science process which gives a road map on how to begin and cycle through a project. Each step in the process is outlined with examples on how to implement. While most data science books focus only on machine learning, this book places machine learning in context of a business problem with important steps such as data preparation. To be clear, machine learning is included with algorithm explanations in the book complete with Python code examples. This includes typical data science topics such as sparse data, text mining, supervised and unsupervised learning. Data scientists tend to split into "R" and "Python" bins and this book is a shout out to "Python" . A nod is given to "R" with the availability of the RPy library and "R" popularity. The authors address scaling Python code with both optimization and using big data tools. They give a crisp overview of the Hadoop framework and the memory advantages of using Spark. Another important part of data science is working with data and this book provides an excellent overview of SQL and NoSQL databases complete with ACID and BASE concepts and contrasts. Special attention is given to graph databases arguing that this is a contender for efficiently modelling complex data. This book is great for the aspiring data science to become familiar with the data science process. This book does require a technical background in order to understand how to set up the examples and follow the theory. It would also be useful for a manager, data architect or data engineer to understand how to best support a data scientist to find business solutions by data mining gems from a business data pool.

Excerpt from Chapter 1: Throwing Rocks at God"The Caterpillar and Alice looked at each other in silence for some time; at last the Caterpillar took the hookah out of its mouth, and addressed her in a languid, sleepy voice.'Who are you?' said the Caterpillar.Alice replied rather shyly, 'I-I hardly know, sir, just at present-at least I knew who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.'"-LEWIS CARROLLBy the time I was twenty-one, my quest for knowledge of God had taken several unexpected turns. In this time, I had searched the world's myriad religions only to find myself frustrated by a gamut of flaws and inconsistencies in all their logic. I had investigated the various paranormal phenomena only to encounter a trail of false claims and chicanery. I had experimented with the mind-altering effects of psychedelic drugs as well as transcendental meditation, only to undergo a series of distorted sense-experiences, none of which had brought me any closer to acquiring verifiable knowledge of any spiritual reality or God. As a matter of fact, if anything, they had only served to draw me farther away. This was due to the fact that while exploring the effects of LSD, I had a bad trip that led to a severe clinical depression compounded by a dissociative, depersonalization, and anxiety disorder. For a year and a half, I suffered this unfortunate state until, finally, with the aid of pharmacological drugs, I was restored to my previous, relatively healthy self.Though it may have come at a very high price, I nevertheless managed to garner some extremely valuable information from this otherwise wretched experience, information regarding the nature of my allegedly immortal human soul.According to the various belief systems (religions) I had thus far encountered, the human soul was supposed to be spiritual in nature, a fixed and permanent agent, unalterable and everlasting. Again and again, I was told that when I died, though my physical body would perish, "I"-the sum of my conscious experience, the essence of my thoughts and feelings, what was perceived as constituting my soul or spirit-would persist for all eternity. The fact, however, that my conscious self had been so drastically altered convinced me that there was no fixed or eternal essence in me.Twice in a year and a half, I had undergone two complete transformations of my so-called eternal self. First, my conscious self was transformed into something other than it previously had been by psychedelic drugs. Then, a year and a half later, my original self was restored, this time by a drug known as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). But I thought consciousness was supposed to be conceived in spirit-fixed, eternal, immune to the influences of physical nature. If this were true, how was it that the core of my conscious experience had been altered, twice now, by ingesting physical substances? How was it that a combination of molecules-raw matter-could affect something as allegedly ethereal as consciousness, that which was supposed to represent my immutable, transcendental soul? To believe that matter could affect one's spirit, that it could impact upon the soul, would be the equivalence, it seemed, to believing that one could throw rocks at God. If spirits or souls truly existed, it would seem they should be impervious to material influence. The fact that my conscious self-my allegedly immortal soul-was susceptible to the effects of chemical (physical) substances convinced me that human consciousness must be a physical entity governed by strictly physical processes. If this was true, then in order to gain a deeper understanding of the nature of consciousness-what I previously believed might constitute a soul-I would need to conduct an investigation into the nature of the physical sciences.Up until this point, I always had the greatest respect for the physical/natural sciences. I was always impressed by their ability to rationally explain most any phenomena as well as to lead to the creation of tools and technologies that worked to make our lives easier. Whereas in the past, however, in which I had admired the sciences, I now revered them. Science had saved my life. I was indebted to it. God didn't save me. I didn't save me. Science, the tool of reason, had saved me. I was my own living proof that science worked. And so, the same faith that many placed in a god or religion, I now placed in science. Simply, it was a paradigm which brought verifiable results. Not that I didn't have faith in science before this. Every time, for instance, I flipped a light switch, one could say I had faith the lights would go on. The difference was that, whereas in the past I had taken my faith for granted, I was now a staunch believer. As I saw it, science had resolved the riddle of the human soul. Science had proven it could come up with chemical formulas that could manipulate the contents of one's cognitions, emotions, and perceptions in almost whatever way it saw fit. It could electrically or chemically stimulate parts of one's brain in such a way that it could make one passive or aggressive, tranquil or manic, happy or sad. In essence, science could alter and manipulate one's cognitive and emotional states as if pulling the strings on a marionette. As a result, I was now convinced that the mind, which I previously believed to constitute my transcendental soul, instead represented the workings of my physical organ, the brain. There was no soul. There was no ghost in the machine. My thoughts-human consciousness-were not the manifestation of some ethereal force or will but rather the consequence of synaptic transmissions, electrical and chemical signals being registered throughout my brain, generating a host of sensations, perceptions, emotions, and cognitions in me-pure neuromechanics. Consequently, as far as I was now concerned, the riddle of the human soul had been solved. From hereon, I would interpret the origin of all perception, sensation, emotion, and cognition from a strictly neurophysiological-that is, scientific-perspective.As secure as I now was that there was no such thing as a transcendental soul, I still found myself plagued by that more essential problem of God's existence. As God supposedly constituted the embodiment of all things spiritual, not until I possessed some rational explanation through which I could resolve the problem of His existence could I be absolutely certain there was no such thing as a transcendental/spiritual reality. And as long as it was possible that God might exist, it was therefore also possible that I possessed a transcendental soul. Consequently, before I could commit to anything, I needed to resolve the greater and all-encompassing problem of God.As the physical sciences had helped me to rationally interpret the underlying nature of consciousness, I now wondered if it would be possible to apply this same tool of reason to resolve that ever-persistent problem of God. Could the physical sciences crack thatnut as well? Up until now, it hadn't come close. From biologists to astro- and quantum physicists, no one had ever advanced anything resembling a scientific interpretation of God. But why was this? Did God truly exist only beyond our grasp, beyond the range of human comprehension? Or was there a physical solution, only no one had discovered it yet?

A very thoughtful, reasoned argument. It did not, however, change my believe in GOD.Laying aside all descriptions of GOD (religious texts, the Bible, Torah, etc.) the assertion that GOD, or the concept of GOD, is basically a function of evolution is logical and easily acceptable to me.If a belief in GOD is a part of the placebo effect, that's fine, too, because the placebo effect is real.If it (a faith, personal to the believer) works (according to each individual's understanding of "works") then what does it matter if it's a placebo or an actual, physical reality? For example, one might say "I was in a hopeless situation and GOD helped me recover." The scientist will say, "The fact you recovered proves the situation was not hopeless."Does it matter, as long as the recovery occurred?

I've read other books on this subject which can be either too dry or too caustic, but this one hits the mark, although I'm not sure I totally agree with Alper that neurological wiring towards religiosity negates the reality of the supernatural or divine. I'm an atheist, so I"d like to agree with him wholeheartedly, but you could also say, as I believe Chomsky said, that humans are hardwired for language in a way animals are not, yet this doesn't negate the fact that language, while culturally constructed, is a real phenomena and we are wired to receive it and acquire it quickly. I'm probably getting in over my head with my analogy, but I think it's worth considering. We humans create music, a cultural construction that is not found in the animal world, yet the phenomenon itself --- the sounds-- are a concrete reality. In fact, some deists might insist that because we are 'wired for God', so to speak, that in itself is proof of God. I wouldn't go that far; we can also be 'wired' for hallucinations and mental illness too. An interesting read and a worthwhile contemplation on a timeless subject; what makes Alper sympathetic is that he arrived to his conclusions as a result of a spiritual search, not a biased knee-jerk stance against religion, which I find a bit off-putting from folks like Hitchens (Mr. Caustic himself). And Richard Dawkins' book, "The Blind Watchmaker" is a bit abstract for me; the statistical probability discussions of evolution just went right over my simpleton head. If you are looking for a layman's take on this debate, this one is it.

I bought this book after hearing an interview with the author on Coast-to-Coast radio. I thought the interview was much better than the book. In fact, I felt the first half of the book was nothing more than a rehash of the Psych 101 class I took in college some 40+ years ago. I really didn't enjoy this book until I got to chapter 15 and the near death experiences. I felt that I could have been well served by reading only the last six chapters. Finally, I was a bit surprised the author didn't even address the possibility of intelligent design and that the gods people worship were possibly those same intelligent designers.

Very interesting perspective! I like that Matt has combined so much research into explaining why humans have such a tendency to believe in god. It's a great read and a fantastic explantion of the relious aspect of human behavior.

Alpers' reading of science is flawed on many counts, most of them inconsequential, but his drawing of generalizations is weakened by these errors. The book's major premise depend on our knowledge of impending and inevitable death being mentally devastating, and he provides little evidence of this result. That said, he weaves interesting speculations of evolved neurophysiology. His proposals in the final chapter to substitute a "religion" based on universally held moral precepts brought to rational behavioral norma are inspiring to a secular rationalist like myself, but they aren't likely to find much traction within religious establishments.

I agree also with what Matthew Alper has written and said in his many interviews. "Human beings are genetically hard wired to experience belief in spirituality and various paranormal phenomena, even though there is no scientific basis for it. According to sociobiology, there are regions in the human brain that generate these belief systems, and the brain evolved this way as a coping mechanism to deal with the knowledge of our inevitable deaths." He also said, "I believe that the anxiety [about death] was so overwhelming that it forced the selection of this cognitive modification which...compels us to believe that there's this other transcendental force...through which, even though we know the physical body will die, we now believe this spiritual component will live on forever."He wrote about studies of meditation and prayer, which show decreased blood flow in the amygdala region of the brain-- this helps to reduce anxiety and fear, which could account for the sense of spirituality. He also wrote that the parietal lobe also gets a decreased blood flow, which can affect spatial and temporal consciousness. In his research he feels many people who are hyper-religious have epilepsy.Being a Neuro-theologist Matthew has also expounded about his theory on the genetic nature of spirituality and how humans are wired to believe in a "God" and spiritual realm. As an atheist, he feels the God part of the brain evolved as a coping mechanism through natural selection-- human survival was enhanced through belief in an afterlife. For those of you who are not familiar with the meaning of `atheist' it is in a broad sense, the rejection of belief in the existence of deities, and in a narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities. Most inclusively, atheism is simply the absence of belief that any deities exist. Atheism is contrasted with theism, which in its most general form is the belief that at least one deity exists. He cited the work of neuroscientist VS Ramachandran who discovered a connection between temporal lobe epilepsy and religious experience. Ramachandran even found that sometimes reading religious text to epileptics could trigger a seizure in them. Another study indicated that religious figures such as the Apostle Paul and Joan of Arc suffered from temporal lobe epilepsy. The tests of Michael Persinger ,using a Transcranial Magnetic Stimulator, showed that stimulation of the temporal lobe could bring on spiritual or religious experiences. In an interview at the University of Pennsylvania, he mentioned the study of Tibetan Monks during meditation/prayer showed blood flow changes in their brains, which could account for reduced anxiety and an increased feeling of transcendence.I highly recommend this book for those who are brave enough to think "outside of the box." It is one of the books our Spiritual Study Grroup in Florida has read with great enthusiasm. There is a difference between being spiritual and being religious. BETWEEN YOU & ME REVIEWI love this type of book but get the puckers when I start to review it. The how-tos are here but it’s simply too late to correct my wayward word usage. I’ll just have to make do with my ingrained incompetence. Mary Norris, Comma Queen, please accept my apologies for the errors of my ways. But know that “Between You & Me” is one of the best of the help books I’ve read.Norris is one of those people: a copy editor with all the answers. But she’s not prickly. She knows what to do with grammar and punctuation; passing on her knowledge without snipe or snarl. Her explanations are clever, clear, and sometimes comical. The advice is practical and should be easily assimilated by even the biggest dolt. One doesn’t expect to have fun reading about punctuation, spelling, and usage. But this book is pure entertainment in its counsel with amusement on every page. The author is going to coach you on subjunctives, spoken versus written language, word breaks, compounds, pronoun gender, and other scary elements. Along the way she’ll touch on commas, colons, dashes, hyphens, semicolons, and other punctuation marks that we all know about. Or do we? If you let this frighten you away, you’ll miss some unforgettable examples of how to get it right. It would be a good idea for the censor cops at Amazon to read Chapter 9 with the earthy title of F*CK THIS SH*T. Norris discusses the use of profanity, decries its abolition, and, obliquely, takes a poke at Amazon’s hypercritical policy of bouncing reviews that have even a hint of impropiety. That practice has always been annoying to me. Amazon is a publishing giant that is willing to sell anything—erotica, rap music with explicit lyrics, sexual tools and potions, books with profanity in the title—but will not publish a review that even hints at bad language or contains veiled sexual banter. This is a must-have book for readers and writers. It might not improve your overall grammar and language skills, but it will make you appreciate that there are people out there who would have you to do better, who work hard at making it simple, and who should be listened to with an appreciative ear. Mary Norris. More than just a Comma Queen.Schuyler T WallaceAuthor of TIN LIZARD TALES

I surprised myself by purchasing (and reading) BETWEEN YOU & ME: CONFESSIONS OF A COMMA QUEEN, in which context “comma queen” is defined as a copy editor. Perhaps it was only my love for stringing words together that compelled me to do so. Perhaps I could learn in retrospect something of the mistakes I’ve been making all these years past.In the Introduction, author Mary Norris describes the evolution of her early life that finally deposited her in the niche profession of being a copy editor for “The New Yorker” magazine, a publication that always seemed too effete for my tastes growing up as I did on the West Coast. Mary then launches off on the evolution of dictionaries and their influence on spelling, the reputation of being witches that bedevils copy editors, the political incorrectness (or not) in the use of gender specific pronouns, and the common errors that befall writers in their use of hyphens, dashes, apostrophes, colons, and semicolons. Finally, she closes with perhaps the two most interesting chapters: the growing acceptability of obscenities’ use in everyday speech and writing ‒ especially the F-word, and the evolution of pencils, pencil erasers, and pencil sharpeners. The author closes with an utterly boring (for me) Epilogue on her attendance at a ceremony celebrating the bequest of a million bucks plus to a small town library by a long-serving copy editor of The New Yorker.Did I learn anything? I know now that I’ve probably misused the word “overall” (a one-piece work suit worn by painters) when I should’ve used “over all”, i.e. above all. Never again shall I err. Beyond that, I absorbed a statement by novelist James Salter quoted by Norris:“Punctuation is for clarity and emphasis, but I also feel that, if the writing warrants it, punctuation can contribute to the music and rhythm of the sentences. You don’t get permission for this, of course; you take the liberty.”Yes, indeed. Thank you.

Mary Norris, a copy editor for The New Yorker has written a book, "Between You and Me: Confessions of a Comma Queen" which is a lot about grammar and a bit about her life and her job. I really can't believe that I am writing a review and tempting Ms Norris to judge my woebegone grammar!Ms Norris's book is not a grammar textbook and she's really quite gentle on everyday speaking and writing. She discusses some punctuation that we all use - I really don't think she likes writing with dashes - and gives us examples of the good and the bad. (Let me say right up front that I couldn't write without using dashes and that's my excuse for using them! But I'm not writing for The New Yorker, and thanks god for that.) Ms Norris quotes a note Jacqueline Kennedy wrote to Richard Nixon after her husband's death. The note was dashed off in that breathy style with which she spoke - full of dashes to keep her thoughts somewhat straight. Norris takes the same note and "corrects" it. The result was a grammatical correct message, but one lacking in Mrs Kennedy's distinctive style. Would Richard Nixon want correctness - or heart? I know which one I'd want!Ms Norris's book is great fun to read, while learning some "Ps" and "Qs". There are some swear words in the text; it's not offensive but just surprising. Now, in this review, I've tried to use most of the punctuation she writes about. Let's hope I'm using it correctly!

Volume OneChapter OneEmma Woodhouse(1), handsome(2), clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world withvery little to distress or vex her.She was the youngest of the two daughters of a most affectionate, indulgent father, and had, in consequence of her sister's marriage, been mistress of his house from a very early period.(3)  Her mother had died too long ago for her to have more than an indistinct remembrance of her caresses, and her place had been supplied by an excellent woman as governess, who had fallen little short of a mother in affection.(4)Sixteen years had Miss Taylor been in Mr. Woodhouse's family, less as a governess than a friend, very fond of both daughters, but particularly of Emma. Between them it was more the intimacy of sisters. Even before Miss Taylor had ceased to hold the nominal office of governess, the mildness of her temper had hardly allowed her to impose any restraint; and the shadow of authority being now long passed away, they had been living together as friend and friend very mutually attached, and Emma doing just what she liked; highly esteeming Miss Taylor's judgment, but directed chiefly by her own.(5)The real evils(6) indeed of Emma's situation were the powerof having rather too much her own way, and a disposition to think a little too well of herself; these were the disadvantages which threatened alloy to her many enjoyments.(7 )The danger, however, was at present so unperceived, that they did not by any means rank as misfortunes with her.*    *    *  (1) Emma is the only of Jane Austen's complete novels to be named after its heroine. The title reflects the great extent to which Emma revolves around its main character, as does its beginning with a description of her (the only other Austen novel to begin this way is Northanger Abbey). the author may have chosen the name "emma" precisely because of the character's centrality, for it seems to have been a favorite name with her. she uses it for the heroine of an unfinished novel, The Watsons, and her fondness for it appears in several letters in which she expresses a wish that someone had the name, disgust that a person with it married someone with an unattractive name, or special indignation that a young lady deprived of sufficent dancing partners should be an Emma (Nov. 30, 1800; April 21, 1805; Dec. 9, 1808). The name's use in England stemmed from its being the name of a medieval queen; after a period in which it fell into disuse, it again became popular in the eighteenth century. (2) handsome: attractive. The word was often used to describe women then and had no masculine connotation.(3) "Mistress of the house" was not simply an honarary title, bestowed here on the sole female in the family, but usually a position of real responsibility. The mistress managed the household, which would include hiring and supervising the servants (in families wealthy enough to have them), deciding on meals, purchasing food and other supplies, and keeping the household budget. She was also expected to serve as hostess for visitors and to perform charitable acts in the neighborhood. Men who lacked a wife or adult daughter would frequently have a sister or other female relative perform these functions. In Emma's case, since she was twelve when her sister married (p. 62), she probably shared these duties with her governess for a while and then assumed full responsibility later.(4) It was standard for girls in wealthy families to have governesses who took charge of their education; in some cases, girls would also attend school for a few years when older.(5)  Girls usually finished their education by eighteen, so this more equal situation would have prevailed for at least three years. A family would typically dismiss a governess at that point; Mr. Woodhouse's rentention of Miss Taylor testifies to two of his leading characteristics, a kind solicitude for others and a hatred of anything that could disturb his existing routine.(6) evils: drawbacks, disadvantages. "Evil" then was used more widely than today, and with not as strong a connotation of malevolence.(7) The author here announces the central theme of the novel,  namely the way that Emma's many advantages, personal and social, have led her to an excessive confidence and vanity that will bring trouble to herself and others. Of course, many, including Emma herself, would not regard these two things, especially the power of having her own way, as disadvantages. But Jane Austen, in keeping with strong cultural and intellectual currents of the time, believed firmly in the need for humility and self-restraint, and she frequently demonstrates these principles in her writings.

Emma tells the story of Emma Woodhouse. She is beautiful, young and has a good fortune. All she needs is a husband! Along the way in this classic novel we see her interfering in the love lives of several of her friends. No one can tell the story of a courtship like Jane Austen, Her focus is on the upper middle classes in Regency England (1811-1820). This is my favorite edition of the book! Dr. David Shepard is an American scholar who provides thousands of footnotes to add to the pleasure of Austen's flawless prose. the text of the novel is on the left side of the open book while all the wonderful notes and period illustrations are on the right pages of the novel. Jane Austen thought no one would like her imperious heroine but for over two hundred years her legions of readers would kindly disagree with that authorial assessment! As a member of the Jane Austen Society of North America I love Miss Austen's novels and hope you will as well. Enjoy this splendid annotated novel!

These annotated Jane Austen novels are fabulous! They are full of amazing information that explains word usage at the time Austen wrote as well as the social, political, and cultural background that every reader knew and understood 200 years ago. Enjoy the novel for the story and wonderful writing the first time through, then read it again using these annotations and discover how much you missed with out them and enjoying and appreciating Jane Austen even more!

I already had an unannotated copy of this wonderful, five-star book and didn't really need another. I can understand that the format of the print edition might not be feasible in the digital version, but it seems inexcusable that the book description would not say so.

The narrative is side by side with the annotations. I found this very useful when I wanted to refer to the annotations. I will look for other publication like this. Annotations are very helpful for novels written in another time when the language and manners were so different from our time.

One of the best books, ever, Emma is a masterpiece by the genius English novelist Jane Austen. If you've seen the movies, the book is better. A pleasure to read over and over. Recommend highly.

This is my favorite line of Jane Austen novels - the annotations are fantastic if you really want to get a feel for the time period's culture.

I was a fan of Emma before reading the annotation version, but the author's in depth and interesting analysis let me understand the novel on a much deeper level and increased my already high opinion of Austen. Strongly recommend.

Wonderful scholarship and excellent insights into the practicalities and complex social rules an stratification of the early 19th century England. Highly recommended for even the casual, amateur Jane Austen enthusiast - like me.

#1,506,036 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I just recently upgraded to Windows 10 which is why I was interested to read this book.Being not so techie, I was frustrated when I encountered several problems, such as: the volume cannot be adjusted and the desktop display was askew.I was almost sorry I upgraded, but decided to give Windows 10 another shot. Hence my purchase of this book.I learned thru this book that Windows 10 has some pretty cool features, such as the security upgrades. I am also starting to love Microsoft Edge, thanks to the tips provided about how to make the most of it.Chapter 5, which discusses the hidden features of Windows 10, is particularly useful.I love how everything is explained in very simple terms, which suits someone like me. Definitely recommended.

After a horrible time with Windows 8, I couldn’t wait to install Windows 10. I heard much about it and read mainly positive reviews and I was positively excited. This book helped me very much, I'm not really a computer person and I don't have much patience with it, but I'm working on it. Everything is laid out in a very simple and concise way, you can easily set up your Windows 10 with instruction from this book. It has some good advice on hidden features and stuff like that, if you are in the mood to tweak it a little bit more. This is an excellent guide to the new Windows, it simply has everything you need and it will save you a lot of time and nerves, believe me.

I bought this book after reading several posts online on how to do particular functions and features. I got tired of constantly googling and asking my friends on how troublesome the new OS is. But after I got this book, I feel very confident to use my laptop. I find that this Windows 10 book is very accurate. I would use this more as a manual for Windows 10. Would recommend this book to all who aren't familiar with Windows 10.

Of all the sub-$3 books here on Windows 10 I think this is by far the best and most comprehensive, if you can get past the typos and grammar issues (at least in the kindle version). Many of the other books just touch on the Start Menu, Cortana, how to install, and one or two other topics. This one goes into less obvious features and settings, such as how to bring back the home page in Edge, using One Note, custom display scaling, One Drive Fetch, and WiFi Sense features that others don't touch on. Well worth the money, unlike many of the bargain primers out there.

An extremely well structured guide for Windows 10. Walks you through everything so you don't have do to it alone. When you start using it, you will get the feeling that it isn't the first time, and that will be all thanks to this awesome guide. I strongly recommend it to beginners.

Very disappointing. I was hoping for a book that would provide detail of all features in Win 10 and how to access them. This did not do it. Worse yet, there were some 40 pages 37% of the book)devoted to Operator C C ++ which is of no use to me. I returned the book today.

I was looking for a book that would provide a mouse click by click path from point A to point B on how to use the features in Win 10. I've used computers for years, but am no "geek". This simply was not what I was looking for.

This book has helped me very much and I have learned a lot from it. It has made it easier for me to work on computers. It is well written.

Wonderful book , I laughed along with Ted and cried along with Ted. As I read about the characteristics of Merle I started observing the character of my dogs more. I did skip some of the book . I wasn't interested in the habits and statistics of wolves and coyotes ,all I wanted to read the storyline of Ted and Merle.

Ted Kerasote's book on his freethinking dog Merle is filled with his extensive knowledge on the wildlife and humorous episodes with his canine buddy Merle, who reminds me of Snoopy in his independent character and individual personality. I am enthralled by the way he and Merle communicated to each other, which I find scintillating. The author has a unique way with a dog as if he were his real buddy and/or partner in performing any daily tasks together. Such human-canine bond seems primordial and endemic in an environment where the world of the wildlife is paraded within arm's reach. In sum, reading this book will enlighten you on how a human-canine relationship can evolve with lots of smiles and tears.

I hardly know how to begin. This is truly a 5 star book. When I read a book like this I want everybody to read it. Therefore, I go around telling people ----read Merle's Door. To begin, Ted Kerasote is a fine writer. He is in complete control of this book from word one. True, this is a dog story. There are 1000's of dog stories out there. I recently read that dog stories are the most popular literature today. But this is not just a dog story, it is much more. Merle is an unusual dog and Kerasote, himself, is a story. He is an outdoorsman, writes for outdoor magazines and lives in the wild. He has hiked, canoed, biked and climbed mountains all over the world. He did not want a dog. Merle choose Ted. One cold morning in Utah Kerasote, woke, in his sleeping bag, and found Merle curled up beside him. Thus begins their story. Bonding with a dog is one of live's blessings. You get an inside look at this beautiful experience as Kerasote and Merle learn to trust and love each other. His next book Pukka's Promise is also a fine book. It has a wealth of data and research about dogs. It is entirely different from Marle's Door but well written and enjoyable. One comment made about my reviews is that I write more pans than praise. This is probably true. I am incensed if my time has been spent reading a poorly written book. However, if a book has 100s of 5 stars, then I don't NEED to write. Merle's Door has 100s of 5 stars, but I needed to write. I write this because I feel so strongly I want to put my 5 stars up there too.

Merle was an independent dog and loved his mountain life in Wyoming. He roamed freely and everyone in the town loved him, “The Mayor” as they called him for his congenial ways of befriending all. I couldn’t help but get attached to him as if he were my own dog! He & the author have a symbiotic relationship, each needing the other for their fulfilled life of hunting, hiking, skiing, and being outdoorsmen. This story is well-told, with lots of research and anecdotes. I’d recommend it, but be ready for extreme attachment to this lovable pooch and his human.

I was going to give this 3 stars, because I honestly hated the ending, but decided that I should be fair, and give it four stars, because overall, this book is very thought provoking. The author not only writes about his dog, but also what his dog might be thinking, and his ideas are based on extensive research he has done on the evolution of dogs. I found a lot of ideas fascinating, and also found myself researching more extensively on some o the topics that he covered. Why not five stars? I found the author to be a bit naive about dog owners who do not offer their dogs the freedom he offers his. First, the author resides in a rural setting, which most dog owners do not. Dogs that reside in an urban or suburban environment, if treated with the same freedom, would possibly end up injured or dead, or even stolen.Second, the author implies that lack of training on the dog owner results in dogs that are disobedient. I have to disagree with him because he got lucky with Merle. Very lucky. Having been involved in dog rescue, I can assure you that few dogs who have been homeless at some point are as mentally stable as Merle. It takes years of training to undo the damage that has been done to them, and in the meantime, it's the owners responsibility to keep their dog safe. This means that they can't offer their dog a doggy door and expect their dog not to get hurt, or hurt someone else, or even just run away. Therefore they should not be judged for merely keeping their dog safe.Otherwise a great read, very much enjoyed it, and would read it again.

I have read alot of dog stories, but this one helped me mourn for a favorite pet of mine as I wasn't able to be there for her when she past. I was on assignnment in another part of the country for several weeks and although I missed her very much, I didn't realize until I read this book that I hadn't had closure of her passing.I sent the Author an email thanking him and telling him about this experience and he was kind enough to answer me.A truly wonderful read if dogs mean as much to you as they do me and Ted Kerosote.

Yet Merle’s Door is also a human-dog partnership story. A beautifully written story combining scientific canine facts with a story as compelling as Racing in the Rain. With hundreds of scientific references, Kerasote explains the behavioral science of dogs in a manner as interesting as his narration of their adventures and misadventures. The book was as compelling as any mystery I have read in the past five years. Buy a box of tissues for the last several chapters. Spoiler alert: the dog dies. Kerasote creates word pictures as if he owns stock in Kleenex.Merle is allowed to make his own decisions, within reason, for instance chasing bison is off-limits. The author and his dog live in remote Wyoming and raising a dog as he did would not work in the city, but it is a fascinating study for semi-remote settings.I highly recommend the book to anyone who loves dogs and wonder why they act as they do and is interested in a good dog and human relationship story.
