These funds were needed to be distributed among the king’s subjects in politically expedient ways so as to ensure the continued loyalty from nomadic and settled tribesmen.What is today Saudi Aramco, started as a Saudi Arabian concession to drill for oil, granted to an American company under the name ‘Arabian American Company’ – Aramco.It began as a huge gamble. Previous geological surveys for signs of petroleum deposits in the Arabian Peninsula were disappointing but not conclusively negative. Oil had already been discovered in Iran in the early 1900s by the later named BP, and later in small quantities in Bahrain.The Saudi king at the time was so sceptical that oil would be found, that he asked the engineers and geologists who would be surveying the concession area, to let him know if they found any underground water cisterns that could be useful to his people.Several years and $10 million later revealed nothing of commercial value. In 1938, the team in Arabia decided to deepen one of the ‘dry’ wells by another two hundred feet, and found oil. By 1940, about 20,000 barrels of oil per day were being produced and the company had begun building housing and offices in Dhahran on the west coast of Saudi Arabia.With the end of World War II, the demand for petrol remained as high as during the war. Not only was Western Europe rebuilding its devastated cities, but the American military presence around the world necessitated consistently available petroleum products. Aramco increased oil production to over 200,000 barrels per day in 1947.The economics of oil had to be managed. If oil prices spiralled upward quickly, it could damage the economies into which the oil needed to be sold. At the same time, the luxuries of modernity were needed and wanted by Saudi royalty for themselves, and for the country. The oil finds were superbly managed so they produced vast amounts of money for the company, and the Saudi treasury.Over time, the kingdom was able to leverage its assets to obtain the best from around the world, in a wide variety of domestic developments and enterprises. This wealth enabled Saudi Arabia to spend lavishly and quickly on its building programme - the development of modern cities, airports, hotels, universities and other amenities, that catapulted large parts of the country into modernity.What Saudi Arabia realized it did have, was an immense quantity of a very desirable resource: petroleum. What it lacked, was the many resources needed to get the most out of this oil wealth. Perhaps the most obvious lesson to any country was this realization: they needed to buy what they did not have from the outside, and then to make it their own. And this theme runs through their modern economic history.For the royal family, it meant sending princes abroad for education at the finest Western institutions like Princeton and Oxford. Eventually Aramco was purchased from the American company - purchased not taken - in what was described as an “amicable deal”, and the company was renamed Saudi Aramco. The board of directors named Ali al-Naimi as the company’s first Saudi CEO.al-Naimi is an example of the Aramco development process. Born into a desert Bedouin family, he benefited from an Aramco-sponsored university education. He returned to the company as an entry-level geologist, learned the oil business and corporate management, and rose to the very top.Managers at Aramco administered the company like an international, not local oil company, with the highest of international standards in every part of the business. This distinction has been the key to Aramco’s success.Aramco has been Saudi Arabia’s greatest source of revenue as well as innovation, and has taken its place among the great multinational energy companies of the world. It is a leader in exploration and production; the initial processing and movement of crude oil, natural and liquid gases. I normally wouldn’t gravitate towards reading a book with this subject matter but I was intrigued given the recent buzz on the Saudi Aramco IPO. I was very pleasantly surprised to be completely absorbed. Ms. Wald’s history of Saudi Arabia and its energy strategy reads like a novel! You have to admire and root for a country with a long-term strategy for its economic future that is willing to sacrifice short-term profits to become even more prosperous in generations to come.

This was a easy-to-read, pretty good history of Aramco and Saudi and how the two have developed over the decades. There were times when the book was repetitive, there are some editing errors (and entire paragraph reprinted two pages later), and the author, at times, felt a bit of a pollyanna regarding the cutthroat treachery within the house of Al Saud and the country. Overall, it's worth the read.

Ellen has been working on this project for about a decade and it really shows. The book is really well done and comes at the perfect time with the Aramco IPO looming.

Although I loved the book and love this series, this one wasn't one of the best. It was mostly an explanatory continuation of the last book. There wasn't much in the way of magic or any of the fighting between sides in this one. It was good and I can't wait for the next one, but this one could have been better and I'm sure you would have to read it in order to understand the next book. My only other issue is, although I know the author has to make a living, the books in this series are, in my opinion, too short, and they keep getting shorter, for the price. I would have given 4 stars had the price been 99 cents, which is what I think it should be. All that being said, I will continue to read the series, and pay the prices, because I love the series.

Getting the next book can't wait to read the next.I also am excited to continue with the academy books as well

I love magic and non-scary paranormal books. Lucia Ashta has created a fascinating world with interesting characters and good plots. I look forward to the next story which I await wit pleasure.

This is one mind blowing, intense, exciting, action packed, hard hitting, smooth flowing, thrilling, page turning delight that grabs your attention from the start. Lucia is definitely one tremendously talented and gifted author. The depths of her insight are limitless. The reach of her imagination is endless with possibilities as she continues to create worlds and realms that leave us in awe and wanting more. Her characters as always, well developed, believable and so realistic you can't help but fall in love with. Her scenes are so graphically detailed and descriptive it really pulls this bad boy together beautifully. One thing is undeniable, once you start reading anything this awesome author publishes, you're hooked. You can't wait for the next installment or any new series, it's addicting and you wouldn't have any other way. Lucia did a phenomenal job bringing this read to life flawlessly. I just poured through two of Lucia Ashta’sMagical Arts Academy novels, Ghostly Return (separately reviewed) and Transformations, the seventh and eighth books in the series. Let me just say it: there’s an old Carly Simon song that is sorta the soundtrack to this review - “Nobody Does It Better”. I read so many (literally thousands) of fantasy novels that I feel qualified to make that statement. It’s just a fact - when it comes to writing consistently original, powerful and fun fantasy novel series, nobody does it better. So come on back to Isadora’s world as she tries to figure out how to survive the spirit world and come back to life. No big deal, right? Hah! Lucky for us though it does result in one amazing pair of stories. Frankly, but for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed, I could go on and on with praises. These two book l’s definitely deserve it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the books are truly easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to Castle’s Curse, the next book in this series.

Transformations is Book 8 in The Magical Arts Academy series which gets better with each additional book. This book begins where Book 7 Ghostly Return ends. Isadora's spirit has retuned to her body after 7 hours of her death much to her and everyone's surprise. While in the spirit world she discovers the location of Albacus. Isa has gained a great deal of confidence during her adventures at the Academy. She now voices her opinion and while working with the others is coming up with a plan to rescue Albacus. Lucia Ashta has a fantastic imagination and creates such wonderful stories. Her world building is awesome and her characters are extremely well developed, interesting, and real. Each book in this series is an adventure and packed with lots of action and progresses at a fast pace. This book and series are ones I whole heartedly recommend. I received a copy and this is my voluntary and honest review.

A fantastic read. This series is one of the best I have read. There is so much storyline packed in each book. This book starts off where the previous book ended. Once you start to read you will not want to put the book down. And you will be one the edge of your seat. Isadora and her group welcome her back to the living. But now they ready themselves for another battle. The Author really brings out these Characters that you really Love. I am really loving Isadoras character she has a big heart. And you can't help but route for them. This is a definite must read.Shauna Joesten

This books was in the garbage on my third day in Greece. Travel books usually protect you against unscrupulous taverns and hooligans. But this one included a Santorini locale that threw all the underhanded tricks at you: inflated prices and bait-and-switch bar tabs! This book was excellently written, but became usless when I couldn't trust its recommendations for dinner or a night out. If you have it, double-check its recommendations with another travel book. If the other travel book doesn't include the establishment don't go!

I thought Dana Facaros gave just the information we needed to get the most out of our holiday, and because we did spend a couple of days in Athens before we caught the ferry we were glad to find that section there as well. What I most enjoyed were her insights...being of Greek descent myself (my grandparents came from Naxos) I often had to smile in recognition. Other English writers just don't get it guite right. I too would treat her to an ouzaki any night of the week!

We bought three Bahamas guides and found none terribly helpfu. A cruising guide should talk about anchorages, holding (especially in a place like the Bahamas), and some special places not to miss. He is best on the Exuma Land and Sea Park, but concentrated on what it was and the history, not on the "don't miss" things.Unfortunately, the Bahama's have been hammered by the recession and storms, and many places are closed or open only for lunch, for example. Those issues were not covered.

The quality of the paper was very poor. And the ink was water base. Once you got a drop of water on the page it penetrated to at least two or three other pages and erased the words on the pages. It makes no sense to design a book for navigational purposes when it is not survivable! I usually do not write reviews. But, for the price you pay for this book and I purchased the entire three volumes, if I had caught in a rain storm or had taken some big waves I would have lost the entire books on my boat. I do not recommend them.

Nothing new here. A disappointing read and reference guide. Probably will return book if possible as it offers no new information.

Great cruising guide. It doesn't look like a regular commercial cruising guide found out there. It's a book to show you around those places stated. It's a great addition to our on board cruising information, we really took a lot of advance having it with us when we did the trip.Wilmag

When I first saw this collection of short stories, entitled The Best Christian Short Stories, my skeptical nature took hold. Smiling to myself, I figured that the "best" thing about these Christian short stories was probably, in fact, that they were short, given the abysmal state of Christian fiction, packed as it is with mimicry, stories that don't ring true, and sermonizing. That's a gross generalization, I know, and not completely fair, but it is true that when you want to read serious literature, you usually don't (sadly enough) look in a Christian bookstore. Nevertheless, given that this collection was edited by Bret Lott (Jewel), and contained a story by an acclaimed writer like Larry Woiwode, I bought the book. I'm glad I did.As Bret Lott says in the introduction, the goal is that the collected stories "will begin to fill a gap in the world of fiction: that between popular Christian writing and that of literary art." It's an intriguing goal and one largely met by the eleven stories that follow.While the most literary and "high-brow" of the stories is "Firstborn," by Larry Woiwode, it would be a mistake to think that this literary art is anything but accessible to ordinary readers, and yet, it is not simplistic or didactic in approach but nuanced and thought-provoking. I was captivated right away by Mary Kenagy's "Loud Lake," about Pete, the son of a father who runs a Christian camp, who, while not unappreciative of his upbringing, has to find his own way, his own path of faith. It's remarkable what cynics we moderns are: for much of the story I kept waiting for Pete to leave the fold, or for the father to turn out to be a hypocrite of some sort, and yet, while their humanness was on display, they were, in the end, people of faith.That human, believable element also abounds in James Calvin Schapp's "Exodus," about a father who has to intervene in a crisis to rescue his daughter and grandchild from a failed marriage. Wilfred Staab is a rough-hewn man, a believer, and yet one who finds it difficult to express love. In a crisis situation, God gives him what he needs. It's a very believable domestic conflict that almost gets out of hand, or maybe it does, and yet we witness a Christian man trying his best, by God's grace, to deal with it.And that's how it goes here. In "Landslide," by David McGlynn, we see a portrayal of a very human and yet very faithful pastor, successful and yet aware of his failings, his inability or unwillingness to keep up with a friend who faded into oblivion, outside the fold of faith. I kept waiting for the usual stereotypes to creep in -- Bible thumper, right-winger, hypocrite, the ones we hear all the time -- and when it didn't, I was taken by surprise.Reading these eleven stories, I have to think that a non-Christian reading these stories may be given a different opinion of Christians. They might believe that Christians do usually mean what they say, want to practice what they preach, but inevitably fail and struggle, like them. In other words, they may think us human. I wonder though if they'll ever find these stories, if they'd ever pick up a book that says "the best Christian" anything. I suppose the goal here is to raise the bar for Christians reading, and maybe that can happen, but I suggest that these writers simply write these stories about Christian people and seek publication in the mainstream press, like everybody else. Good stories will sell. They don't need a label.This is billed as a "first volume in a collection of contemporary fiction that combines the artistry of critically acclaimed writers with a clear Christian worldview." It's a hopeful start. The only way it will continue is if we buy it, if we let the publisher know that this is exactly what Christian publishers need to be selling. I plan on buying several copies and giving them to friends this Christmas. Consider that, would you? It's a start.

I read this book to Christian hospice patients and I believe the book is filled with deep messages of hope and contentment with our mortal lives. It is exactly what I was looking for.

The stories were generally good and thought provoking, but the actual mechanical writing in a few was arduous to follow. This is still a very good book for aspiring writers to see the work of others, and to experience the prose of those who may not be as celebrated or acclaimed.

Such a disaster. Im a christian and writing my own short story collection and got this as re search... and just nope. There is no life or inspiration from the Lord. Christians cant keep putting out boring and dull stuff anymore. Our movies are improving slightly but our books need to change to. God deserves our best.

Stories did not interest me. Many had no closure to the story. I would not recommend this book to my friends.

A terrific collection of short stories . . . all superbly written and of such a variety as to take you from laughter to tears.
