It’s a delightful adventure for us even as it’s a bewildering one for twelve-year old Morrigan when she takes a train to the mystical Wunderground and begins classes with eight others, all of whom have unique magical skills…except her. She’s been identified as a Wundersmith, but, what does that mean exactly? The only other person with that label is definitely not a nice person and he’s frightened many people with his abuse of his powers. Morrigan is worried; will she discover if she has any magic like her new classmates? Will others despise her when they find out what she is? Can she make friends? With strong echoes of Harry Potter and Hogwarts, we read about eccentric and difficult teachers, the challenges to learning magical arts, secrets that must be kept, and unexpected tests to see if Morrigan’s group can support each other. And Morrigan, who’s known her weaknesses all too well, starts to see she has strengths, too. This story contains many unexpected twists but has a satisfying ending. The author puts us into the action immediately, but there are many unusual names and references to people and events so that I wondered if I should have read the first of the series before this. (The first was a bestseller, FYI, and I suspect this will be too. And it would make a great movie, too.)

Fabulous sequel is fabulous. Two weeks after reading this, I'm still scraping my jaw off the floor. As with the first book, I loved the characters, the world, and the creativity. Ezra Squall is a very intriguing villain. I haven't seen one quite like him in a long time, and I'm looking forward to the increasingly hinted at plot of the overall series.

I love being back in this world. Nevermoor was honestly the best middle grade fantasy book since Harry Potter. There were a few things that I wanted/expected more in this sequel such as more interactions between Morrigan and Jupiter, more school and hotel scenes, etc. I feel like would have bumped it up to 5 stars for me but this was still a fantastic sequel. On that note, some of the interactions between Jupiter and Morrigan were just so beautiful and touching. They totally remind me of Sirius and Harry’s relationship. Okay, okay, no more comparisons with Harry Potter because this series is completely different but it just seems to bring up all this nostalgic feelings in me.I loved being introduced to new characters, especially the professors and instructors at the school. Such unique characters. Townsend really creates such a whimsical atmosphere to this world with her characters.I cannot wait until the next one! Also, if anyone listened to the audiobook, were you laughing at Morrigan’s singing? Because OMG. This narrator is hilarious.

I loved NEVERMOOR so much I ordered a copy from England so I could also have it in paperback while I waited impatiently for WUNDERSMITH to come out. And then as I read WUNDERSMITH, I was so enchanted and intrigued that I didn’t want it to ever end. Sadly, it ended and it’ll probably be a long time for a 3rd book. Jessica Townsend is a clever, talented and a skillful wordsmith. She managed to create loveable, unique characters, balancing rising conflict with heartfelt, fun moments. I’m waiting for the world to explode with “wunder” for this amazing series. I am recommending it to EVERYONE!!

I am loving the Morrigan Crow series! It's such a superb blend of wonder and humor and danger, and Townsend's writing carries you along at the perfect pace. I could NOT be happier to have had this series put in my hands, and you can bet I'm putting it in as many other hands as I can.I hope there's plenty more to come!

I devored "Wundersmith" the day it arrived last week. In my view it's a delightful mix of YA, urban fantasy and alternate history. It got a heavy touch of Roald Dahl-like wonderful way of describing the strange people and creatures Morrigan meets on her way.I'd recommended the books about Morrigan to both youth and adults alike. I'm allready waiting for the next one!

The Wundersmith is the second book of the Nevermoor series. Much like the first one it did not disappoint - the writing is eloquent and the story is good. My 11 years old daughter likes it and looks forward reading from the book every day.

This is the wonderful sequel to Nevermoor. Whenever I put it down, I couldn't wait to get back to it. It is only a children's book in the sense that Harry Potter is. Can't wait for the next book in the series -- and I am 71 years old!

Being from Montana and a former basketball player turned coach, this was a story close to home. We have all played Indian teams in Montana and know that their talent is great, but is usually wasted after high school. Sad story that is on repeat in most cases.

As someone who has lived and worked on a reservation for nearly seven years, I found Mr. Colton's story an extremely accurate picture of life on the rez. There is high unemployment because of the rate of alcoholism. It is common for grandparents to be the major influence in their grandchildren's lives. The lack of discipline and direction is common. I found it a great story of triumph that Sharon could rise above her circumstances and complete some college classes all while raising her sons and living with an abusive husband. On the reservation, the murder and abuse rate is higher than communities off the reservation and probably higher than anyone knows because many deaths go un-reported. I have friends who are teachers and I am going to recommend this book to them and their students along with some of Sherman Alexie's stories for teens. I would love for there to be good honest discussion between natives and non-natives to try to create a safer life for children on the reservation but there is such a division between natives and non-natives that that doesn't look likely. The graft and corruption within the tribal government is sad but seen as normal so little is done about it. I'm not sure what the solution is, I just know that what we're doing now is not working.

This story caught my attention with its detail of current day "native" lives. It drug a little in the middle of the book because basket ball isn't my sport, but by the time I finished the book I had learned so much about an area, a life style, and a sport I knew nothing about. It was well written and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Definitely worth reading!

A good read. Entertaining colorful language, very detailed and surprisingly accurate to what life was like for a teenage basketball star growing up on an Indian Reservation filled with memories.

What a trip! What insight! What a learning experience!Larry Colton's year on the Crow Indian Rez with the Lady Bulldogs of Hardin, Montana HS was more than a basketball read. For sure, I followed 'x's' and 'o's'..but what I got was a side-long glance at life on the rez. Colton has a way that put you in the Nike's and moccasins of these teen Crow girls and their non-indian buds. It's all there: the hope, the hopelessness, the alcoholism, the squalor, the game..and life after basketball. I savored every page. It was a delight that I looked forward to each day. When it ended...I wanted more.

This story is about the high school and town where I grew up, recognize most of the names and probably went to school with parents/aunts/uncles of most of the people named, including the "sweet grandmotherly" woman at the museum who many have told me is my mother. This story is very accurate and does give a representation of the people, white and indian, in the area.

Mr. Colton presents a clear picture of a struggle on multiple levels. His ability to gain the trust of local families and the girls on the team adds so much to making the book possible. A very helpful and instructive experience in learning a lot about how the wonderful lead character matures, falls and picks herself up, a lot due to the influence and support of Mr. Colton I'm guessing.Well written and an unbiased as could probably be about some unsettling behaviors of both adults and kids growing up.

A heartening story of a Native American girls high school basketball team who together win a state championship. A good read and gives insight to life on the reservation.

This particular reprint is unusable. A certain amount of marginalia, and even some smudged/ambiguous symbols are to be expected, but this is beyond anything I've seen. Virtually every series of equations has at least some crucial part of it completely whited-out, and on some pages it is clear that several centimeters were cropped off of the outside edge, leaving whole columns of text out.The problem doesn't seem to be the source material, either, as can be seen by comparing the "preview" with the actual book - symbols that are clear in the preview are totally blank in the book (eg bottom of page 21).Planck's book itself is a treasure; but this version just isn't usable. I've had problems with "Forgotten Books" before, and will be more careful to avoid them in the future.Amazon was good enough to give an instant refund (less shipping), provided I print some labels and drop it off. Don't make the same mistake -- try a different print.

While this is the old book I have wanted to check out for years, it came as a bit of a disappointment when I finaly got it. The robot-based scan-and-flip system used for its re-creation did a pretty poor job in OCR. This is especially bad for all the equations used in this book. The end result is that I had to download the PDF images of this book from the publisher and painstakingly go through each page looking for typos (which are a lot...) To make things worse, the original copy used for the digital creation was full of hand-written notes and highlights, causing even more errors in the OCR results.Unless you are very, very interested in the subject, you should probably spend the time to read five other books.

As a graduate student taking a radiation heat transfer course, I found parts of this book a little difficult to grasp. It required many re-reads throughout the paragraphs, but obviously to truly understand radiative heat transfer, it helps to learn from a master like Planck. Recommended.

These are few classics ... but I could have have got them free as e-books from Forgotten Books publishers !

They say Nils Abel once said "Read the Masters!": he was talking about mathematics, of course.I think this advice from Abel should be extended to this book. It's clear-style, complete; proceeds from simple to complex concepts. It's just one of the best books on Physics I've read.

In 1900 Max Planck introduced a quantum constant into his mathematical expression for the energy distribution of blackbody radiation. This act is now considered to mark the beginning of the twentieth century revolution in physics. Planck's contemporaries had difficulty understanding his earliest papers on the quantum concept. In 1906 and 1914 Planck published more comprehensive accounts of his theory of blackbody heat radiation and his quantum hypothesis. This American Institute of Physics publication, The Theory of Heat Radiation, reprints these two later works - Vorlesungen Uber die Theorie der Warmestrahlung (1906) and his revised and expanded second edition (1914). The 1906 work is in German while the revised 1914 edition is in English. This publication is volume 11 in the outstanding AIP series titled The History of Modern Physics 1800-1950.I found the lengthy introduction by Allan Needell to be very helpful in placing Planck's work in the proper historical context and in identifying points at which Planck made key changes in his personal views. Much of Needell's introduction is devoted to Planck's gradual acceptance of Boltzmann's probabilistic approach to entropy. The first fifty pages examine heat radiation from the perspective of classical optics, including topics like radiation at thermodynamic equilibrium, Kirchhoff's law, and blackbody radiation. The next fifty pages, deductions from electrodynamics and thermodynamics, were substantially more mathematical. Planck discussed the Stefan-Boltzmann law of radiation and the Wien displacement law in detail as well as spectral distribution of energy radiation. Section III presents a general procedure for calculating entropy and introduces his quantum hypothesis. I did not study section IV (Planck's derivation of the law of the distribution of energy in the spectrum of blackbody radiation), nor section V (Irreversible Radiation Processes.)Despite an extended effort on my part, I did not find Planck's systematic examination of heat radiation to be particularly helpful as an aid to mastering thermodynamics. Its appeal is largely historical. Needell rightly observes that Planck's works will primarily benefit those readers who seek to study and understand the history of quantum physics. However, I do believe that general readers with substantial familiarity with thermodynamics and electrodynamics will find it worthwhile to study Allan Needell's thoughtful introduction and to browse Max Planck's seminal work. For those looking for a more basic self-tutorial, I highly recommend Thermodynamics by Enrico Fermi. Dover Publications has reprinted this remarkably lucid, concise work in an inexpensive soft cover format. This short book is based on a series of lectures given by Fermi at Columbia University in 1936.I also recommend chapter one, Thermal Radiation and Planck's Postulate, in the widely used text book Quantum Physics of Atoms, Molecules, Solids, Nuclei, and Particles by Robert Eisberg and Robert Resnick.

If you look through the first chapter, right away you will notice that the digital copy was unable to perform a good copy. Words like ultraviolet become <<:00vi0le1 Buy the book. It will sit well for you on the shelf and doesn't take up much space.

Terrific book... I have referenced it (and Gladwell's other books) many times in speeches, conversations and in my own books.

This is not just a good book. This is an important book. One of the first things I realized in reading this book by Malcolm Gladwell is that his position is diametrically opposite from that of Dr. Ben Carson, who through his campaign for the presidency stated that "poverty is a state of mind." Carson emphasized that despite all odds he was able to pull himself out of poverty and become a neurosurgeon and accomplish the things he did.Gladwell's book states early that success doesn't happen in a vacuum. It isn't based on intelligence, but on a variety of factors, and he uses multiple examples to demonstrate that we as a nation could have many more successful people in our country if we were to accept that it takes a village to make successes out of our children. In fact, he shows that hard work and opportunity in almost all cases are more important than intelligence. One story tells of the Canadian hockey league and the fascinating statistic that the vast majority of all successful hockey players are born in January, February or March. Why? Because the cutoff date for signing children is January 1, and those born in the first three months have a distinct advantage in age, experience and size in relation to those they play against. That same cutoff date is used by other countries, such as the Czech Republic, for not only hockey but soccer as well, which means that children born in the later part of the year consistently are overlooked when it comes to team sports. It's a built-in bias. These biases are all around us, and determine who succeeds or fails, constantly. In addition, the bias of a culture has a significant effect on how well a student does. Gladwell talks about the belief that Asians are better at math, which he shows is because their languages are more number-friendly, leading children to count earlier, and which make math simpler. In addition, he shows the inherent tradition of hard work of southern China had resulted in a work ethic for their descendants that continues today. Many of the stories are supported with statistics. One of the most eye-opening to me was his observation of the impact on summer vacation. Statistics show that the amount that lower-, middle-, and upper-class students learn in elementary school each year isn't that significantly different. But when you compare what they learn or forget over summer vacation, there is a significant discrepancy. Upper-class parents keep their children busy with lessons and classes all summer, while in most situations lower and even middle-class students don't do much during the summer and often forget much of what they have learned the previous year. As the summers add up, the problem compounds. And so the difference between upper, middle and lower class widens. The book is significant, easy to read, and extremely thought provoking. I highly recommend it.

Have you ever wondered why some people prevail and live remarkably successful lives while others fail to reach their full potential?Malcolm Gladwell explores the different factors that decide the difference between successful and unsuccessful people. We learn what rock stars, geniuses and computer programmers have in common. He explains that success is not just a matter of IQ, but a combination of hard work and opportunity. In Outliers, Gladwell hooks the reader by first providing an anecdote and explaining the common misconceptions that people have about that situation and then completely turns our understanding of how they got to be successful on its head. This book includes stories of why January first is the ideal birthday for a hockey player, how the work ethic determined by Jewish immigrants making clothes lead to them becoming successful lawyers, how Asians working in rice paddies has developed a culture which excels at math, and how performing for 10,000 hours in Hamburg decided the Beatles’ rise to fame. While this book was enjoyable for this trivia alone, Gladwell manages to change our perception of success entirely, because timing, circumstance, and even luck are major factors that decide a person’s success. Sometimes the disadvantaged actually have all the advantages in the world just because they happened to be born in the right place at the right time. We have to examine all the factors surrounding a successful individual which all had to come together in order for him or her to be an outlier.Gladwell bases most of his anecdotes and explanations on research conducted by others and I wish he would have gone into more detail about how these studies were conducted and how reliable they actually are but this is the only complaint I have about this book. He is a very charming and enthusiastic story teller, he thoroughly explains his thought process without rambling and kept me interested and engaged throughout the whole book. Overall I enjoyed reading Outliers and I would definitely recommend it to others.

Review

"What’s so welcome about Kohn’s approach is that he walks a tightrope with perfect balance: never losing sight of the unique aspects of being human, while refusing to force those aspects into separating us from the rest of the abundantly thinking world." (The Times Literary Supplement 2014-04-23)"How Forests Think” is an important book that provides a viable way for people educated in Western philosophy to approach indigenous animism without being credulous or inauthentic. It is refreshing to read a book of this intellectual caliber that takes Runa stories seriously and enters into dialogue with their claims using the tools of Western philosophy." (Anthropos 2016-04-20)

From the Inside Flap

“A thinking forest is not a metaphor. Rooted in richly composted, other-than-symbolic semiotic worldings, this book teaches the reader how other-than-human encounters open possibilities for the emergent realization of worlds, not just worldviews. The semiotics in this well-wrought book are technical, worked, demanding, tuned to form and modality, alert to emergent properties, multinaturally and ethnographically precise. Thinking with the other-than-human world shows that what humans share with all living beings is the fact that we all live with and through signs. Life is constitutively semiotic. Besides all that, this book is a powerfully good read, one that changed my dreams and reworked my settled habits of interpretation, even the multispecies ones.” -- Donna Haraway, UC Santa Cruz “I can only call this thought-leaping in the most creative sense. A supreme artifact of the human skill in symbolic thinking, this work takes us to the other side of signification―itself doubly manifest in what gets noticed and not noticed―where it is possible to imagine all life as thoughtful life. It has been done hand in hand with the Runa. It could not have been done without the delicacy of Kohn’s ethnographic attentiveness. However far along the track you want to travel with Kohn, you will see that the anthropological landscape has already changed.” -- Marilyn Strathern, University of Cambridge “...A work of art... [and] an immensely refreshing alternative [for] philosophical anthropology.” ― Bruno Latour, Sciences Po “Radically innovative and original [and] beautifully written.” ― Anna Tsing, UC Santa Cruz “A remarkable aspect of [this book] is the complex – and often beautifully written – intermingling of subtle theoretical propositions with an even subtler ethnography.” ― Philippe Descola, Collège de France “[Kohn] means to attach us again to the world we thought our thinking removed us from by showing us that the world too thinks. … I know dancers and painters who would groove to Kohn's expansion of self and thought and living, and I want to see the dances, paintings, films, buildings that come out of dreaming over this book.” ― Bookslut Â

In 'How Forests Think,' the author, Eduardo Kohn, has undertaken an ambitious project, challenging anthropology to be inclusive of non-human life. To carry out this project, Mr. Kohn has employed 4 perspectives; ecology, colonial history, semiotics, and the Runa, an indigenous group in the Amazon rain forest of Ecuador. He seeks to weave each perspective together symbiotically in order to gain a deeper understanding of the context the Runa participate in, and through the eyes of the Runa, a different viewpoint on how we can relate to the non-human world. For a reader, the challenge is to pull apart the strands of thought which he has weaved together, in order to contemplate his main ideas. There is much to contemplate which I doubt I can give justice to in this short review. Therefore, I will highlight a few key thoughts. The biodiversity of the rainforest is set up as the stage for this ethnography. Through the rainforest, Mr. Kohn contemplates the continuity and dynamics of form. Two examples he provides are the characteristics of amazon whirlpools, and the evolution of the walking stick insect. Insinuating that a certain geometry is inherent to both life and non-life, he feels it is this geometry that propels life forward into its manifold aspects. To me, it sounds like he is proposing something similar to the idea of the 'elan vital' introduced by Henri Bergson. The work of Charles S Peirce, a semiotician, provides Mr. Kohn with his next main theme. Semiotics is the study of meaning making, and is the study of signs. Mr. Kohn believes that not only is life inherently geometric, but it also is communicating and thinking to itself in it's diverse aspects through signs. This perspective also informs the Runa, a group of hunter gatherers that practice animism, or a belief that the natural world is animated by spirit. Interestingly enough, the Runa have been in contact with the outside world for centuries and have been acculturated to the extent that their beliefs bear the trappings of a cargo cult. Yet, despite the outward form of their belief system and practices there has been continuity of their animistic beliefs since they were first 'discovered.' Through the eyes of the Runa, a reader can get a picture of life and its forms as not only symbolic, but enchanted. Here, I think Mr. Kohn is attempting to say that we don't have to perceive life in the same way as the Runa or ascribe to their meaning-making system. Their symbol system merely provides a case study of what an anthropology beyond the human could look like. Yet, we do need to subscribe to a view that sees life as inherently symbolic, sentient, and made up of a multitude of selves that an anthropology beyond the human needs to recognize. He also seems to be saying that we need to recognize that life has some type of animating presence propelling it forward, whether we recognize this animating presence as spirit informing matter or some kind of intrinsic geometric sign system is up to us, but an anthropology beyond the human cannot move forward without adopting a viewpoint similar to this, because an anthropology beyond the human would have to honor life in all of its diverse aspects. As a reader it is challenging to mine the gems that are in this book and it may take more than one reading and some reflection to understand everything that Mr. Kohn says, since there is so much set on the feast table. Even my interpretation may not capture all of what Mr. Kohn is trying to say. If there is a critique, it is here. Possibly, a reader may feel that Mr. Kohn is developing too many themes and is inadequately synthesizing them together.Yet, if one is to adopt a systemic perspective, as Mr. Kohn attempts to do, I am not sure how else one could write a book like this because Mr. Kohn seeks nothing less than a revolution in our way of thinking. He strives to achieve this by exposing us through the eyes of the Runa shamans, and the shape shifting jaguars that participate in the life of the Amazon. It is due to the challenge that Mr. Kohn raises and his method of delivery that makes this a compelling read..

Anthropology beyond the human is a proposition for an ontological paradigm shift from one that fundamentally separates human and non-human realities to one that views all living beings as existing in continuities. Anthropologists are encouraged to extend their studies beyond human material practices to include interactions with other beings that are not human. The idea is that human constructions such as language, which constitute the main forms of knowing and representation by humans, derive from, and relate to, a broader form of existence – the nonhuman world. Hence, without abandoning language, humans can endeavor for a more extensive representation of the world through signs that are shared by both human and non-human living things.Eduado Kohn, in his book How Forests Think: Towards an Anthropology Beyond the Human, argues that symbols are human constructions and, therefore, derive their meaning from the particular cultural context that they are used. Hence, symbols are not synonymous with sings – there are other ways of learning relationships using signs that are not symbols. For instance, one did not have to understand the language of the Runa people in order to understand the meaning of pu’oh – a falling tree – that is also understood by other non-human creatures such as monkeys. The relationship among humans, monkeys and trees in the forest ecology becomes more apparent. Borrowing from 19th century American philosopher Charles Saunders Peirce, Kohn describes these signs as index and icons.Human over reliance on symbols while neglecting other signs that are not captured in language or symbols denies us the opportunity of seeing the world beyond human constructions. This viewpoint gives agency and consciousness to non-human living beings. For this reason, other living beings that we humans coexist with in space could be speaking with us but our failure to relate with them in a common ‘language’ could hinder our harmonious coexistence with them. Kohn demonstrates this point with the Runa people of the Amazon forest by tracing how they had to recognize cues from non-human beings in the forest in which they lived to enhance their hunting prowess – their main source of livelihood.Anthropology beyond the human is a path to the annihilation of the nature/society dualism. There has been a long-standing tendency by humans to view nature and society as two separate entities. This dualism has often led to the maltreatment of non-human beings by humans – a view of the non-human aspects of nature as resources for human gratification. Even with the recognition of the interwoven nature of the nature/society relationship, it is often difficult for humans to gain knowledge of, and represent, that which is not human. However, as suggested by Kohn, the search for signs that link human and non-human representations will make the nature/society continuities more noticeable and, consequently, solve this problem of dualism. While the anthropology beyond the human suggests an ontological shift, it does not recommend an accompanying shift in epistemology. It is believed that the ways of conventional anthropology are capable of performing the anthropology beyond the human. However, a research that will require knowledge of representations beyond the human will require more time than conventional anthropological research. In order to deal with this problem, one may have to engage other researchers who understand the behavior of other non-human beings, which inhabit the research areas with humans. This in my opinion will constitute an epistemological shift; this endeavor will be unlike conventional anthropology – ethnography. Anthropology beyond human is complex and, although ethnography could constitute key a method, in the whole, it will require a hybrid epistemology.
