I read this book with my 9 year old. Leonardo da Vinci is a very interesting figure in history and I don't think that this book did a good enough job capturing that, even for a book designed for youths. The book made him sound more like a whiney artist that never finished anything and just bickered back and forth with Michelangelo. The book didn't really go beyond his painting and hardly talked about any of his other ideas. I just felt like this was a wasted opportunity.

I used this book for students to study a person in history to write a report on. This was for a 4th grade classroom. Each student read the novel on their own and filled out a novel study that I created for non-fiction books. Students were able to follow the book with ease and understand what they were reading.There were several pictures to aid in understanding. There is also a timeline that helps students understand the timeline of events as they read. Very great resource.

Got this for quick biography on him for 7th grade art docent . Quick read, good info, fun style, perfect. It was great also to show kids that even geniuses like Leonardo do have big humiliating failures and that just normal and that life goes on. Also like the childhood from "broken" family, helping to show kids that it is not kids who have it all easy who succeed, it's your own drive.

These are great books. All of the Who Was books are excellent for young readers. My daughter gets very excited when she can teach us a little something about history and she seems to truly find things interesting. I think this is a great read for grades 3 and 4

Good book with great info about do Vinci. The large font, pictures, and short chapters make it an easy read. We homeschool and we read one "Who Was..." book each week for enrichment. Fast shipping, arrived in perfect condition. Will add it to our collection.

How great is it to just go to your phone and download a good kids book when you little one forgets to bring home their nightly reading from school? Can not beat the convenience. Oh, and the biographical books are very entertaining an informative. After reading this one, my 10 year old wanted to go online and look the paintings. High quality images of the paintings were not included, just drawings of them.

We really enjoy this series and we recently added this one to our collection. I really enjoy them and it's a nice way to introduce kids to history and written in easy to understand ways. Really suggest this series and we own several. Our kids started this series in elementary school.

These books are great. Informative for non-fiction and perfect readability level from my elementary school child. We love these books.

This book is an absolute must read if you want to understand Wall Street shenanigans. Partnoy has done a phenomenal job of demystifying the world of swaps, derivatives and other exotic financial instruments. Even better, he shows how investment banker antics have affected Main Street inhabitants including yourself. How did Orange County and so many other municipalities get so deeply in trouble? The author explains.I have a Ph.D in business and many finance courses under my belt, but I never quite understood the systemic dangers of the 'financial innovation' that is sweeping our markets. Now that I have, I will sleep much less well at night.Partnoy describes the evolution of exotic instruments and the characters involved in this evolution. How CS First Boston made securites of virtually any type of debt, Salomon pioneered the CMO and so on. He details the specific wrongdoings of companies like Enron, Global Crossing and WorldCom. He shows you the enabling role played by gatekeepers like accounting firms, law firms, analysts and credit rating agencies.Even more important, he shows you exactly how the collusion happened and why. He gives you both an aerial view of the markets and a down-in-the-trenches description. I often wondered why, in efficient markets, participants voluntarily involved themselves in such convoluted transactions that had high costs in terms of record-keeping and fees. The answer, as Partnoy shows, is that virtually all of these arrangements permit some set of parties to subvert law or regulation or both. This is true domestically and internationally.He graphically describes how lobbying keeps regulators at bay and the venality and ineffectuality of politicians. The chairperson of the Commodities Futures Trading Commission, for example, exempted important parts of Enron's business from regulation and, just weeks later, joined Enron' board. There are many such stories that show exactly how self-serving our legislators and regulatory guardians are.My quibbles are minor. While Partnoy is clear, his language is colorless. Perhaps his legal background has something to do with this. Given the strength of his material and the depth of his research, he could have made this book a popular bestseller if he had used more forceful colloquial expression.Also, he does not talk at all about the role of technology in this evolving mess. Greedy, incredibly smart bankers have always been with us. What has permitted them to have this huge impact now is the ability of computers to churn massive amounts of data, pick out the faintest of patterns and keep records of incredibly complex transactions involving dozens of parties over vast stretches of time.This said, this is the best book I have yet come across that explains how and why large scale financial malfeasance happens. And why it is hardly ever punished. You will understand why the perpetrators of Enron, Global Crossing, Adelphia, WorldCom, Sunbeam and so many others will walk and hold on to their vast gains. Start praying that there is justice beyond our courts.

In the culture of money...the only thing that matters is money....not demonstrable performance....and certainly not public accountability.I also like his ending....after dissecting the immense degree of professional culpability, from CEOs, to CFOs, to other high management, to lawyers, to capitalists, to government regulators...by reminding the reader that there is yet, one more person to share culpability...a person who, in vast numbers, also caught the fever....the reader....himself and herself.

I had read the Little Blue Reasoning Book by the same author, and appreciate his love for solid reasoning skills, so I ordered The Little Green Math Book. I am also very happy with this book. I am no expert, but feel that these skills are not covered in our school curricula, or not covered decently... I wish I had learned this content in grade school, high school, college and graduate schools, but it’s never too late... Brandon Royal: please keep writing.

this is a good book for those who wanted to be able to brush up on their math that they are most likely to use in a business or in an applied world setting. there are some neat sections of condensed conceptual descriptions of math then the focus is on consumer or business or some basic social science math with a little bit on how to present math to others graphically. nice applied BASIC math book. good quizzes to test a person weak and strong points. -- I would not want this as my ONLY math book though that is for sure even for the basics.

This had good solid, basic thinking problems. I’d like some more explanation. The problems aren’t heavy on the math, more logic. But it’s a fun little book for quick classroom brainteasers.

The book gives a lot of common sense solutions that you might not think of yourself - I like it.

 My master's level introduction to clinical neuroscience course used the first edition of this book as its primary textbook. It is a small, light weigh, concise introduction to clinical neuroscience. The content is engaging and easy to read. This is definitely a textbook you can read cover to cover. There are images on nearly every page, however they are not full color but rather printed in black, white and red. The pages themselves are a glossy material, which makes it difficult to highlight or take notes in the book itself.The book is divided into four sections1. Neuroscience model (20% of book)2. Modulators (20% of book)3. Behaviors (40% of book)4. Disorders (20% of book)The second edition of this book includes three new chapters: (1) inflammation and immunity, (2) the electrical brain, and (3) genetics and epigenetics. If you are debating about whether to purchase this edition or the first edition, I would go ahead and spend the extra money on this one. The chapter on genetics is very useful with the explosion of new research in the field of psychogenomics.This book only covers the neurobiology four specific psychiatric disorders: depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer's disease. Throughout the book, the authors do touch on other disorders but it's not as in depth as the ones mentioned above. If you are interested in a more thorough analysis of the pathophysiology of each disorder, I would check out Neurobiology of Mental Illness.Finally, the book does cover a great deal of behavioral neuroscience: paint, pleasure, appetite, anger, sleep, sex, attachment, memory, intelligence, and attention. One thing that I think it lacks is an overview of the brain's motor system. It does not cover the extrapyramidal or the pyramidal motor systems. This would be helpful for mental health clinicians prescribing antipsychotic medication.

This book has been tremendously helpful to prepare my clinical neuroscience review course for psychiatry residents. It is very comprehensive and targets the most relevant themes of interest for the clinician. This book is unique at explaining difficult concepts and ideas in a plain manner and relate them to important issues of clinical practice for the general psychiatrists. It also has a number of curious, illustrative, creative examples and anecdotes that keeps the reader engaged. The illustrations are very helpful for its study. There is a great need for clinical psychiatrists to become more engaged with clinical neuroscience. A book like this should be quasi mandatory for any trainee or psychiatrist that did not get good quality training in neuroscience during their schooling years.

Why must most experts make such a interesting field into such a dry read? Have no fear of that happening with this textbook. I looked forward to want humorous quips I would find hidden amidst a wealth of important information. At the outset, the author, Vali Nasr, notes that (page 20): "The Shia-Sunni conflict is at once a struggle for the soul of Islam. . .and a manifestation of the kind of tribal wars of ethnicities and identities, so seemingly archaic at times, yet so surprisingly vital, with which humanity has become wearily familiar."The volume begins with a description of the separation of Shia and Sunni; the main issue was the succession to Mohammed. Would it be familial (Shia) or a collective decision of tribal elders (Sunni)? The succeeding chapter (Chapter 2) provides a compressed history of Shia and Sunni. These two chapters, taken together, provide a useful context for those who are unfamiliar with the divisions within Islam.Later, the work explores a more contemporary perspective. Chapter 4 examines events in the 1970s and after. The title, "Khomeini's Moment," speaks a great deal to the subject matter. The end of the chapter discusses the role of the Ayatollah Khoi (from Iraq) who took a different path. The author notes that (page 145) "Khoi's importance in placing limits on the reach of Khomeini's ideas and prestige is often underrated and underrecognized." Then, the role of the Ayatollah Sistani in Iraq is discussed, to good effect. Chapter 6, in part, speaks of Sistani's political perspective and its importance.There is further discussion of the importance of the Shia perspective in Iraq and Iran and what this might portend. The "Afterword" begins to suggest what is "at stake" with "the Shia Revival."This is a good volume to read if one wishes to know more about the internal conflicts in Islam and what this might entail for American policy in the Middle East. Well written and thought provoking. . . .

_The Shia Revival_ by Vali Nasr is a well-written and timely analysis of the history and nature of the greatest division within the Muslim world, that of the 1,400 year old split between Sunnis and Shiites, a division existing from practically the beginning of the faith, each sect viewing itself as the "original orthodoxy." Though stressing that the Shias (like the Sunnis) are hardly monolithic, varying in degrees of piety and because of different cultural and economic backgrounds, Nasr listed a number of key characteristics of Shias worldwide. Though Shias are a minority of the world's 1.3 billion Muslims (comprising 130 to 195 million people or about 10 to 15% of the total Muslims in the world), they are as nearly numerous as the Sunnis in the Islamic heartland from Lebanon to Pakistan and around the Persian Gulf comprise 80% of the population. The Shia-Sunni split dates back to the succession crises after the death of the Prophet Muhammad. Sunnis came to accept the notion that successor caliphs to the Prophet (perhaps individuals chosen by the community) need not possess exceptional spiritual qualities but merely be exemplary Muslims who could direct the religious and political affairs of the community and still later accepted future rulers so long as they maintained order, protected Islam, and left religious matters to the ulama (religious scholars). What became the Shiites disagreed with this, feeling that the true leaders of the community should not be "ordinary mortals" but should instead be Muhammad's family - popularly known as the ahl al-Bayt or people of the household - as the blood of the Prophet ran in their veins along with the spiritual qualities invested in him by God. Similarly, Sunnis and Shiites differed widely on matters of religious interpretation. Sunnis came to believe that all believers are capable of understanding religious truth in a way and to a degree that makes special intermediaries between God and man unneeded, while Shiites came to feel that there were outer and inner, hidden truths in religion, and that without the right leadership the true meaning and intent of Islam will be lost. Shiites believed that there is hidden and esoteric knowledge, inaccessible to the average believer without help. The Shiites placed a great deal of emphasis on the history of the early rightful successors to the Prophet and on Shia saints and consequently also have a great love for visual imagery depicting these individuals and their struggles (most of which ended in martyrdom). This love of imagery grates on Sunni sensibilities, who often view it as "possible inducements to, if not outright expressions of, idol worship." Related to this is the great Shia festival of mourning, remembrance, and atonement known as Ashoura, a religious festival and drama akin in many ways to Christian festivals such as Good Friday "Way of the Cross" processions. As Nasr put it, while Sunnism "is about the law and the "thou shalts" and "thou shalt nots" of Islam, Shiism is about rituals, passion, and drama." Sunnism and Shiism differ not so much because of divergent practices but because of the spirit of their interpretation of Islam. Shias, much like Christians, have a strong millenarian streak as well. They believe that the line of imams (descendents of Ali, son-in-law of Muhammad, first rightful successor to him) continued through the tenth century, when the Twelfth Imam, Muhammad al-Mahdi (the Guided One) was taken by God into a miraculous state of occultation in 939. His return will be the "end of time and the advent of perfect divine justice." This messianic framework of belief (along with the martyrdom of the imams and of Shia saints) have been key influences on Shiites and resonate in events today, such as Shiite views of the Iranian revolution, the disappearance in Lebanon in 1978 of the popular leader Imam Musa al-Sadr (some felt he had been miraculously occulted), and in the actions of Muqtada al-Sadr in Iraq (who named his militia the Mahdi Army, implying that his cause was that of the Twelfth Imam). The key reality of the Middle East today is the Sunni-Shia conflict. The most important outcome of the war in Iraq, its "central legacy," has been that Iraq has become the first Arab-majority country to be ruled by a democratically-elected Shia majority, tipping the scales against the long Sunni domination of the Middle East. Though the Shia revival began with the Iranian revolution and Hezbollah gains in Lebanon against Israel, today it is about "protecting and entrenching" Shia gains in Iraq. Shia success there will lead to greater ties among Shias throughout the Middle East, Pakistan, and Afghanistan and increased Shia demands for a greater political role everywhere. This Shia revival rests on three pillars; the newly empowered Shia majority in Iraq, the rise of Iran as a major regional power, and the empowerment of Shia populations in Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Bahrain, and Afghanistan. This revival will result in a huge Sunni backlash - as shown by the actions of such Sunni organizations as the Taliban and al-Qaeda - and if anything will strengthen anti-Americanism in the region, as the revival comes at a time of rising Sunni extremism. Anti-Shia feelings and actions by the extremists will hurt the U.S., as anti-Shia feelings will solidify Sunni public opinion and expand the influence of groups such as al-Qaeda. Nasr does see hope though as well. Shiites will be much more likely to work with the U.S., as both the U.S. and the Shiites share a common enemy (Sunni extremists) and greater democracy in the region (a stated U.S. goal) will add Shiite empowerment throughout the region. The U.S. has already been of great aid to the Shiites, removing Saddam Hussein and empowering the Shia majority in Iraq (efforts at de-Ba'thification in Iraq have really been de-Sunnification efforts) and taking down the "Sunni wall" around Iran, as for a time Iran was constrained by Sunni-dominated Iraq to the west and a Pakistan-Taliban-Saudi axis to the east.
