Stellar book with a lot of information on specific varieties of plants as well as techniques on growing that maximize both nutrition as well as flavor. I read this back to back with his book Home Grown Revolution and found both to be interesting to read with more detailed information on what to grow as well as techniques than I could absorb in a single or even a handful of readings. These books are going to be true reference books that I refer back to time and again.

I'm conflicted on how many stars to give this book. On the one hand, the content is very good. James Wong has done a lot of research and the information is some I have never heard before. On the other hand, the font is very tiny and there are some places where it looks like the ink is about gone; you can hardly see the print - and I am not exaggerating! You need a very bright light and a magnifying glass to read it. I'm wondering if I just got a bad copy, or if they're all like this. I am going to write to the publisher.

This book is amazing!!! A beautiful assortment of delicious varieties of fruits and vegetables are recommended. I'll be ordering pretty much all my seeds based on his enticing descriptions. The hardest part will be narrowing down the list. There is also some excellent and unusual gardening advice which is backed up by scientific trials. You can't go wrong with this book. Also makes a great gift for the seasoned gardener. I bought one for my Mom. Thank you Mr. Wong!!!

Besides informative, this is a beautiful book and well organized. Mr Wong has done his homework and conveyed it in a very readable book.

His book has made me go back to the garden and plant more yummy things. Great book!

This book has some things like using aspirin and other things on plants that I had never heard of before that really got my interest. I am still reading though so I don’t know all the tricks yet.

So Many great tips! I like that he not only gives the tips, but expains the scientific reason WHY! My friend has taken to calling the tips “growing the Wong way! This is one time you want to grow “wong”!

I felt very lucky to get this book free from Amazon and I have enjoyed every bit of it. I read some of the novels that I grew up with and got a treat to read some that I had never heard of and they are all wonderful. If you are easily offended by old southern racial references then maybe some of his work is not for you but I felt that he did not look down on African Americans because he put the runaway slave Jim on equal footing with Tom and Huck and he wrote from his time in history and it was the norm, the way people of different races interacted at that time. Mark Twain's novels are full of humor and irony, and some very deep insight into the workings of the human spirit and mind. I highly recommend his work to anyone who wishes to enjoy novels from such a changing time and who can appreciate the differences in people but when it all came down to it everybody was the same in the end, according to Mark Twain.

It’s difficult, overall, to find fault with Mark Twain writing all though I suppose some do and reviled by some of the remarks here but then I always say to each is own. For me Twain is one of the best top 10 authors America has produced and with some of his work I would have to say that he is the best...but hey, to each his own.This Kindle edition most certainly has included all of his major novels but of course not his short stories and articles. This is a good thing for me because I know have access to many of the book I have read over and over again. I started reading Twain when I was around 5 years old...well, actually I did not read them my self but rather my mother did, but by the time I graduated from H.S. I had read all these and 70 years later I am still reading them and each time I read them I pick up a bit more.While I have all the novels here in my library It is nice to have these wonderful work while traveling. Both my wife and I have one suite case each for our books and this little kindle most certainly cuts down of the baggage during a long trip.I purchased this version January 2017 and other than a few editorial error I really had no problem with it. I like the fact that it is indexed and you can go right to the work you want.

I've long been an admirer of Mark Twain. Few writers reveal as much of themselves in their work as does Samuel Clemens (Twain). For me, he embodies the American spirit and character in a way that few others do; and "Life on the Mississippi" is Twain at the top of his game. He's a genius at dialogue, recognizes and enjoys the pretensions of people; and will not tolerate hypocrisy. His story-telling technique is wonderful, and he can be very funny. Having said that, Twain's writing can also be uneven, and sometimes a passage of utter beauty can be followed by drivel. That's Twain.I've read that when "Life on the Mississippi" was submitted for publication, Twain's editors thought it was too short, so sent the writer on a trip down the River to reflect on the changes since he had lived there. Twain is Twain, so reading that part of the book is not unpleasant, but it is really just a travel piece that does not begin to rise to the levels of his earlier reflections. Even so, Twain seemed to be aware that he was writing the story of a time and place that was rapidly disappearing; and in that I think he was correct. "Life on the Mississippi" stands as a valuable snapshot of a time, place, and writer that are no more.

Read this book on a rainy weekend, mostly because nothing else to do, and i didn't expect much. I was pleasantly surprised.Excellent. Well researched. Growing up in the west in a railroad town, my knowledge of the River and the boats was limited. I didn't realize the early movement from the east coast was centered North and South along the Mississippi and not straight west as most are led to believe.The author makes the early days come alive.

This is a fun little book that I've recommended to friends. I ordered it for my Kindle based on the enjoyment I got from reading the author's effort on the Erie Canal, and I can't say I was disappointed. I grew up only 20 miles from the Mississippi, but what I didn't know about the Father of Waters could -- and did -- fill a book. I was particularly interested in learning more about the early arrival of steamboats on the Ohio/Mississippi/Missouri river system, how dangerous the travel could be, and how competitive. Certainly Mr. Andrist leans on the experiences and the writing of Mark Twain, but his early experiences as a steamboat pilot go a long way toward explaining just how ever-changing the river could be. Also fascinating to me was the fact that just about anyone could travel by steamboat -- if they were willing to load and unload cargo and help take on wood at every stop. Plus, his accounts of steamboat races had me on the edge of my seat. Talk about a truly dangerous "sport...." In short this is an interesting account of a little bit of Americana that helped settle the heart of the country, but it little covered today. Fortunately, Mr. Andrist helps make up for that.

While there is, as one critic mentioned, considerable overlap with the author's first book (Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight), I found this one even more fascinating and compelling, with many elements I consider when evaluating a memoir: * It contains lyrical and vivid writing that pulls the reader into the sights, sounds, smells, and emotions of the narrative's places, especially Africa. * It offers an introduction to a world and culture and place that is so utterly foreign to me, I felt as though I had gone on a grand safari myself. * Its character development was both harsh and compassioniate, especially the rendering of the author's mother "Nicola Fuller of Central Africa." * The story provides keen insight into the often unmentioned civilian victims of war. * The narrative explores life's emotional complexities of, and brutalities against, the human heart, yet it moves quickly enough not to become maudlin or mired dark places. * It inspired me to think about how I would react in some of the unspeakably awful circumstances that Nicola Fuller, the author (Nicola's daughter), and others in the family had to face. What a wonderful find. Alexandra Fuller captures the seduction of the African sun and burning landscape. The vast spaces that set the mind sailing seduced her parents and made them stay against great adversity. They lived in Kenya when British Colonists spent their days in royal comfort, but those days ended with a revolution and war in the 60’s. Ms. Fuller masterfully weaves the very personal history of her dramatic childhood and the life of her stiff upper lip parents against the backdrop of a tumultuous time. Her parents chose to remain in Africa after their lands were seized and to set up housekeeping in remote Zambia where they found peace under the” Tree of Forgetfullness”. I have ordered the third book in the trilogy of Ms. Fuller’s stunning memoir.[...]

Her ear for spoken language is brilliant. Her descriptions of smells are without compare. This is the third book I’ve read by Ms. Fuller and I’ve loved them all. The moment I submit this review I’m going to begin my fourth one. I’m happy she’s such a prolific writer!

I enjoyed Fuller's other book, "Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight," so much that I immediately bought this one. While "Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness" is a good, solid book, there were enough similarities between the two that I often felt I was reading the first book over again. "Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight" paints a vivid, personal picture of Fuller's childhood in Africa. The hardships she endures, brought on by conditions, bad choices, and even worse luck, are an individual tapestry of place and time from the author's own perspective. I felt like I was right there with her, seeing life through the lens of her changing perspective as she matured. In "Cocktail Hour," Fuller focuses more on her amazing and sometimes maddening mother and her life before, during, and after Alexandra came into the world. It's true that her mother is a larger than life character, and she already figures prominently in the first book. If I had read "Cocktail Hour" first, I would probably give it four stars, but because so much of it already felt familiar, I was a bit disappointed. If you haven't read "Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight," I highly recommend it! If you want to read "Cocktail Hour" as well, I'd suggest letting a few months or years pass first so it feels more like a fresh book.

Ms. Fuller has written an intriguing story of her parents' lives in [mostly] eastern Africa, their struggles during and after British control and what the white farming experience was [and I guess is] like in that vast continent. She does an excellent job describing the beauty and horrors of living daily life there; particularly touching is the Fullers' deep love for Africa which is quite palpable throughout the book - they just can't imagine living anywhere else and always come back. I'd really like to know these people! No obstacle deters them from scratching out a living on various farms they either own or manage. And it's clear how much Ms. Fuller loves and admires them for their perseverance.Some of the descriptions of the surroundings and landscapes are so lovely - particularly as evening falls - that I felt as though I were sitting right there with Ms. Fuller and her mother as they reminisce together. Two minor negatives are 1) the book starts off a little jumbled and would have been better had it proceeded chronologically as it does as it gets going, and 2) more pictures and maps of the regions the Fullers lived and traveled in would have been helpful.

I bought the hard cover based on one review that said the photos couldn't be enlarged. I should have gone with my instincts to try the digital version first The paperback is a fine little book to carry in a pocket as a reference. The book (either format) is good for those who understand how to handle watercolors. It's packed with good little refresher (and refreshing) ideas, but primarily shows finished pieces. Information about which colors and brush sizes were used is given. Sizes of the actual paintings and paper are also provided in both inches and centimeters. There is some instruction given, a lot more than might be expected in something this small, buty I feel readers should know some basics if they are total beginners. I liked it enough that I decided to take a chance and get the Kindle version. WOW, I should have done that first. On my Kindle Fire H D 7, the paintings enlarge beautifully (at times to larger than the screen). The text also enlarges with no problems on the digital version, but I could read the paperback format with my bifocals- no problems. The color and detail are great- really helpful. I still think the paperback is a handy reference, so I will probably give it to a Kindle-less friend. This book seems like it would be very helpful for urban sketches. It really helps the painter focus on the basics and simplify/streamline the whole process. For me the Kindle format is the better choice and value.

After reading reviews that complained about the size of this book, I bought the kindle version. I could increase the size of the paintings Simple.

As a beginner preparing for first class, I bought this little book. Read it on an airplane and was convinced I could not adequately use watercolor medium, however, the second reading generated a little confidence. Once I actually tried some exercises with the extensive supplies I'd purchased (I LOVE buying supplies for any and all activities!) I really came to appreciate the wealth of information in this tiny book. The author did an admirable job of covering many of the terms and techniques of watercolor and provided excellent examples. I actually like the small size, not to mention the small price! I've purchased larger and more expensive books that did not begin to match the content in Hazel Soan's book.

I believe this is the best tutorial I ever used in my first year of painting. I've read many books, watched a lot of You Tube instruction, and practiced many techniques but this book taught me so much more. I highly recommend it.

I'm a beginning watercolorist. I like this ebook for the many inspiring examples of watercolors done quickly. While the author explains how they were painted it is not a step by step guide as such. I read through in a few days and now will use it for reference.The only issues I have is with the conversion from print book to kindle version. There were a few misspelled words and a few missing pictures.Also the layout didn't always follow exactly. The text might refer to the painting on the right for instance when it is on another page.Mostly not a big deal but I would've liked to have gotten all the paintings.

If you're new to watercolor, like me, I'd HIGHLY recommend this book for you. Save your money, as this little (and it is tiny) book is all you need. Hazel Soan's tips in this book are unparalleled, her instruction clear, precise, and absolutely pitch perfect. She does not give in-depth instruction, but enough to encourage you to use your intellect and instinct to paint on your own. It is not a "recipe" type instruction, but powerful, nonetheless. Cannot give this book enough stars, it's that good. Best $8 I ever spent for my watercolor obsession. It was one of two books I bought for my niece when she got bit by the watercolor bug. Superb.

I didn't realize it was pocket size but I love it. It is not really for beginners but I've played a little bit with watercolors and find this book an inspiration to have at hand, I plan to carry it with me in my little storage box of watercolors and tools and papers so that I can just pull it all out and practice during my lunch hour as most of the examples can be accomplished in a short period of time. The artwork shown uses a small palette of colors but look terrific, in my opinion. It's wonderful what can be painted with just different tonal colors of black to gray, or blue to light blue, etc.

Bought this as a gift for a 4 year old who has everything frozen. Even with all of the other toys she had to chose from she chose to play with these first. She did not get the concept of turning the pages with the story but non the less she enjoyed looking at the pictures and hearing the story being read to her. The books are sturdy and the pages are vibrant with pictures. Her older sister even sat and enjoyed them with her. I hear moms only request is that they could have head phones as they like to take it in the car

My daughter has several of these sets. I think we may have received one that was a little used. Was advertised as new but the battery pull tab had been removed and the tape on the outside of the retail packaging had been opened. It did work on but looks like we got someone’s return. Some of the pages had crease marks as you can tell someone had flipped through the pages. No big deal, my four year old will do some damage to them.

I am only giving it 1 star because the books that came with it were okay.I bought this for my granddaughter's birthday, who is obsessed with Frozen. We opened it the first time on 10/29, and it did not work.Apparently, I am not able to return because I purchased a month before it was even opened, so it is too late.DO NOT BUY THIS! Big disappointment!

very dissatisfied with this product. the electronic reader specifically. the titles of the books aren't correct, it reads a title of a book, then reads a completely different book. waste of money, regret purchase.

Three year old niece took to it right out of the box...figured it out on her own and follows along with books. A winner all around.

It's cute and our 4 year old loved it, but have replaced batteries 3 times in 3 months with limited use. Not sure what could be wrong but didn't really know there was a problem until after the return window had closed.

My Grandaughter loved it as a gift and got it in March. She is 5 and loves having the stories read to her as she can read along on her own.

I was hoping for some kind of fight between Aaron and his group and Kevlane... hoping for some kind of conclusion to the whole evil wizard trying to find all the virtues and take over the world... but, nope.This book really just... dragged. Nothing REALLY happens except another virtue is found, and evidence is brought back to Perennia of what Kevlane is doing. I found myself skimming more than reading, especially when my kindle informed me that some of the chapters were 30 minutes long. I guess I'll see when the next one comes out and I read the synopsis. Then I'll decide if it's worth my time.

Belgarin's troops have been defeated and now Belgarin no longer exists as he is known. The wannabe king has been taken over by Wizard Boyce Kevlane who could not be more evil if he tried. While Kevlane, as Belgarin controls the city of Baresh he is also doing experiments on people in an attempt to make the most evil and monstrous army possible. The people in Baresh are in great fear for their lives.Knowing that something is not right Aaron and his friends go to Baresh to bring back proof that Kelvane it the monster they need to defeat to save Adina's kingdom. Death seems to await them around every corner when Kelvane inadvertently discovers their presence in the city.Meanwhile, Adina and a group of friends go to Galia to take back the throne from a group of usurpers.Aaron and Adina have much to tell each other when they meet again in Perennia.While I did enjoy this book the first two chapters confused me because none of the usual characters were in them. I went back a couple of times to make sure I was reading the right book. However, it does all come together to create a fast paced story with a satisfying ending even though we know the story isn't over.

When can I start the next book in the series? This was another enjoyable and fast read. I recommend this book and series to any fan of the fantasy genre. Be sure to start from the beginning. This series is filled with interesting characters, lots of action and magic.

Book 4 was just as engrossing as the first three. Well done Mr. Pepper. Although I have to be honest, after finishing this one I'm a bit worried for the side of Good in the coming battle. Fingers crossed.

I looked forward to this book and the next one. But, I would like the series to conclude to better understand how the seven virtues come back together or how Silent reaches his destiny. Since there are seven virtues, does that mean there are seven books to this adventure series?

A decent read. Still needs to stop using "went' instead of "gone" at the appropriate times in all the series books, and needs to stop using wonder when he means wander, but his editing since the second book has improved considerably.

Following the sellword Aaron Envelar through four books is an experience well worth your time.The story unfolds seamlessly with twists and turns that keep you involved in each segment.

This is a comprehensive study of sexuality in the Old Testament, discussing social, legal, ethical, and theological factors. There is an extensive discussion of the interrelationships between various parts of the Old Testament. Davidson starts with Eden as a model for human sexuality, gives a close analysis of the laws in the Torah in light of that experience, and then moves exhaustively into a topic-by-topic discussion of how things functioned in ancient Israel, mining all parts of the Old Testament for whatever light can be shed on the topic, and finally concluding with the Song of Solomon as a model for fulfilled sexual experience.While the primary focus is on the Old Testament, Davidson occasionally addresses the New Testament outlook and discusses application to contemporary ethical questions. Discussions with other theologians are usually carried on in the footnotes, but no less enlightening for all that. This is not a complete Christian theology of sexuality, but it is a necessary building block for any such effort.The book would probably have benefited from a better editing job, as it is frequently somewhat repetitive. Steve Martin (no, not the comedian) has over twenty years of successful experience in large ticket software sales and sales training. Although his examples are drawn from his direct experience in that industry, those who sell IT systems, engineering services, IT outsourcing and other large ticket professional services will find his advice to be relevant.Unlike many successful sales people, Mr. Martin draws on psychological theory in terms of how people communicate and receive information. His source is the fine work of Dr. Milton Erickson, one of the main inspirations for neuro-linguistic programming.Where most books about complex sales (those where lots of people are involved and many stages) are good for spelling out what has to happen at each step, Heavy Hitter Selling extends beyond those observations to describe in detail what you need to say, how you need to say it and how you need to connect with those on your sales team, the customer's evaluation team and the ultimate decision influencers and decision makers. It was that extra element that makes this a unique book in my experience. I know of no NLP book that looks at complex, large ticket sales. So here, you can get both perspetives in one place.That brings me to the book's main limitation. In some of the areas for describing how to interpret others' eye and body movements, Mr. Martin's conclusions differ from what I have seen described in other NLP books . . . and from the teachings I received during courses I took with Dr. Richard Bandler and Anthony Robbins in this area. I leave it to you to sort out, but I felt that the material in this book wasn't quite as good as what is available elsewhere on NLP and the subsequent enhancements that have been developed for selling. So if you don't know NLP, you should doublecheck the work here in other books and through your own experience.To me the most brilliant part of this book is the description of how to identify and work with "coaches" at the potential customer's site who are willing to help you sell your product or service. That lesson is one that I have emphasized with everyone I have ever helped to learn how to sell consulting services. It is very difficult to succeed unless someone takes you by the hand who works for the customer company and helps you do things in the right way for that company. If you only read and apply that section, this book is a five star resource for you.To test the overall effectiveness of the book, I took a developing client situation that I am working on and analyzed it using the perspectives in this book. I found that process to be very valuable. It made me realize an additional step I needed to take now, and gave me a more thorough understanding of how the relationship is developing with this potential client. I also realized that I had a much better chance of succeeding than I had originally thought, and I will now put a lot more emphasis on working with this potential client than I otherwise would have. My time from reading the book was well rewarded simply from these perspectives.You can either make all of the mistakes yourself and learn the hard way . . . or you can learn from a master. I recommend the latter approach to enhancing your sales. Steve Martin can be that master for you if you work in areas of complex sales that I earlier described.Look for the best opportunity, listen carefully, speak appropriately, and move in the ways that will open the way to understanding if you want to grasp selling success!

I found this book to be a breath of fresh air. After making a lifetime study of sales and sales management in the high tech industry, I have read most of the sales classics. What I find most interesting about this book is that rather than just breaking down the sales cycle into component parts, the focus is on interpreting human behavior and focusing on building winning relationships within the complex sales cycle.Paint by numbers sales strategies and tactics worked fine in an exploding economy, but the need to bring a higher level of art and science to today's sales organization is mandatory for survival. I found many useful ideas inside this book that could immediately be put into practice. Ideas that yielded immediate results. And after all isn't that why we continue to buy and read books such as this?

This is by far one of the most compleat salesmanship book I ever read. Helpful, especically those parts on the use of words. It really stands the test of time, as I just found that the first version might have been published by Wiley as early as in 1980. In short, recommended!p.s. Just finished Heavy Hitter Selling and it has revolutionized the way I think about selling and interacting with my customers as a whole. I don't plan to put this back on the shelf any time soon, either; I'll be reviewing and studying it often. The information in this book not only applies to complex sales, but even smaller businesses--including sole proprietors who wear the salesman hat!--can learn so much from it. The information in this book has me excited about my business again and I can't wait to implement what I've learned. If you're looking for a book to solve your sales problems and do everything for you, this isn't it and good luck finding what you're looking for. This book does, however, offer just what you need to change (revolutionize!) the way you approach selling and the customer relationship. Absolutely recommend.
