I thought about who ought to read this. It seems to me that the best audience would be business managers who have responsibility for IT security, but who don't presently have an IT skill set. Obviously, IT security is very important, and the consequences of an information security breach can range from a headache to devastation. Read the book and you'lll realize that IT security has human, software, hardware, operational and system elements that require close attention. As a manager, you're faced with what the author calls the "Defender's Dilemma" - you have to defend everything and the bad guys only have to find one point of attack. However, as the author says: if everything is a priority, then nothing is a priority. The book provides terminology, identifies weaknesses in managing your employees engagement with the internet, discusses software for defense and some weaknesses in the software, and organizes the defenses into a three-tier model so you can better decide what level of defense is currently best for your company. I believe that the book will give you a better understanding of what your IT professionals are telling you. If you try to digest the book's contents it may furnish you better questions for you to ask your IT group. It also suggests processes for dealing with events and incidents (these are different and the book goes into this). Incidents are much more serious. My copy of the book is only 98 pages, but it takes some focus. It has a few typos, but this isn't why I gave it 4 stars. While I expect that the author didn't want to be seen as recommending any particular software or product, I think the book could be improved if he at least made some suggestions of what products might meet a company's needs or at least where you might find these products. With this caveat, I recommend the book.

Truly this is basic cyber security. If you're totally new to the concepts its a good book to raise awareness like a college 101 course. Don't expect to be able to run an Information Security Program after reading this book there are way too many areas of discipline to master not covered in this book.

I bought this book to have an overview of InfoSec in the real world, and I got that. The book describes various cybersecurity measures and gives real-world examples of security incidents. It is well-written and easy to read.

Great book for security professoonal and the author introduced the right domain of CISSP. Great read and well recommended.

Cyber Security Basics is a high level tour through the field of Information Security. Don strives to strike the right balance of how much information to present. I appreciated his use of a maturity model to communicate the correct order in which to build your cyber security program. I recommend this book to anyone starting off in the field or is just curious about it.

Great for simple, quick, intuitive, yet comprehensive review of the concepts and recommendations. Don does a great job of explaining complex items in easy to understand language.

I purchased this book so that I could refresh my cyber security skills. The book is very easy to read and I was able to read the entire book in two days. Great book!

Excellent for beginners!! Highly recommended.

Chapter 1 Stuck in the Back "How much longer?" Jessie asked from the back seat, tapping the window glass three times. Jessie always tapped the window three times when they passed under a bridge. "Another hour," said Mrs. Treski. She glanced at the clock on the dashboard. "At least." They had already been driving for three hours, climbing steadily higher and higher into the mountains, and Jessie could feel herself sinking into a sulk. Everything about this trip to Grandma’s house was different. First of all, Evan was sitting in the front seat. Jessie could tell he was listening to his iPod. From behind, she could see his head bobbing slightly to the beat of the music as he stared out the window. Evan had never been allowed to sit up front before. But this time, when he’d asked―for the ten thousandth time―Mrs. Treski had given him a long, thoughtful look and said yes. He was ten and tall for his age, so Mrs. Treski said he was old enough to move up front. Jessie was nine―and stuck in the back. "Hey," Jessie said, trying to get Evan to turn around and notice her. But he didn’t. He couldn’t hear her. It was like he wasn’t even in the car with her. Jessie stared out the window at the farmland as it whizzed by them. Usually, she loved this drive. She loved to count things along the way―cows, hawks, Mini Coopers, out-of-state license plates. She kept tally marks in her notebook, and at the end of the trip, she would count them all up to see who had won. It was almost always the cows. She also tracked their progress by looking for important landmarks along the way―like the pest control building that had a forty-foot fiberglass cockroach creeping over the roof, or the two-story carved wooden totem pole that was really a cell phone tower, or the billboard for a diner that had a big metal teapot with real steam coming out of it. Evan used to be on the lookout for these landmarks, too, and it was a race to see who could spot each one first. But this year, he didn’t seem to care. Even when the giant water storage tank painted like a ladybug came into view and Jessie pointed it out to him, he just shrugged, as if he couldn’t be bothered. He was no fun, and suddenly the trip felt long. They passed under another bridge, and Jessie tapped the window three times. "Why did Grandma set her house on fire?" she asked. Mrs. Treski’s eyes shifted from the road to the rearview mirror, locking on Jessie’s reflection for a second before returning to the highway. "She didn’t mean to. It was an accident." "I know," said Jessie. "But why did it happen this time?" Mrs. Treski tipped her head to one side. "Acci-dents happen. Sometimes there’s no reason. She left something on the stove, and it caught on fire. It could happen to anyone." But it hadn’t happened to her grandma before. Jessie thought about all the times Grandma had cooked noodles for her or made hot chocolate for her or heated up soup for her. Not once had she set the house on fire. It was because of the fire that they were driving up to Grandma’s two days after Christmas instead of the day before, the way they always did. And it was because of the fire that they weren’t even sure if they would be staying at Grandma’s for New Year’s Eve the way they did every year. And that was the really big thing that was different this time. For as long as Jessie could remember, New Year’s Eve meant staying at Grandma’s house and the long, slow climb to the top of Lovell’s Hill, where the trees parted and the sky opened and there stood the old iron bell hanging on its heavy wooden crossbeam. Just before midnight they would gather, walking through the snow-covered woods, coming from all sides of the hill―neighbors and friends, family and sometimes even strangers―to sing the old songs and talk about the year gone by. And then, just before midnight, the youngest one in the crowd and the oldest one, too, would step forward and both take hold of the rope that hung from the clapper of the dark and heavy bell, and at precisely the right moment, they would ring in the New Year, as loudly and joyously and for as long as they wanted. Jessie remembered the year when she had been the youngest one on the hill, and what it felt like when Mrs. Lewis, who was eighty-four that year, had closed her soft, papery hand over hers. They had swung the rope back and forth, over and over, until the noise of the bell filled the snow-covered valley below and the echoes of each peal bounced off of Black Bear Mountain and came racing back to them, like an old faithful dog that always comes home. But this year, everything was upside down. They might not even spend New Year’s Eve at Grandma’s house. It all depended Mrs. Treski said. On what? Jessie wondered. She tapped her right knee twice. Not spend New Year’s Eve at Grandma’s? Who would ring the bell? Jessie jiggled her legs up and down. Her left foot was feeling prickly because she’d had it tucked up under her for the last half-hour. "How much longer to the Crossroads Store?" she asked. "Oh, Jessie . . ." said her mother, looking in the rearview mirror again. "Do you need to stop?" "What do you mean?" asked Jessie. It wasn’t a question of whether she needed to―although now that she thought of it, a trip to the bathroom sounded like a good idea. "We always stop at the Crossroads Store," she said, with a hint of a whine in her voice. "It’s just that I thought this time we could drive straight through," said Mrs. Treski. "We’re making such good time, and you know how the weather is in the mountains. You never know what might blow in." " Mo-o-om," said Jessie. Everything was messed up on this trip. "Evan, you want to stop at the Crossroads, don’t you?" Evan just kept looking out the window, nodding his head in time to the music on his iPod. "Evan!" Jessie didn’t mean to hit him quite so hard on the shoulder. "Quit it!" he said, turning around to glare at her. "I’m asking you a question!" she shouted. Evan took out one of the ear buds and let it dangle from his ear like a dead worm on a hook. "Do you want to stop at the Crossroads?" Jessie couldn’t help thinking the question sounded dumb. Of course he would want to stop. But Evan just shrugged and put the ear bud back in his ear. "I don’t care." Jessie threw herself against the seat and folded her arms over her chest. "Relax, Jessie," said Mrs. Treski. "We’ll stop. I could use a break to stretch my legs, anyway. But we can’t stay too long. I don’t want to get to Grandma’s after dark." *** The Crossroads Store was a ten-minute detour off the main highway. It was on the corner of two roads that were so dinky, Mrs. Treski called it the intersection of Nowhere and Oblivion. But the store itself was miraculous. It was a combination gas station, deli, bakery, gift shop, bookshop, hunting/fishing/clothing store, and post office. They sold kayaks, guns, taxidermied animals, hunting knives, Get Well cards, umbrellas, joke books, night crawlers, candy, and decorative wall calendars. Jessie could wander the store for hours, wishing she had the money to buy just about everything. She only had five dollars in her pocket, though. That was all the money she’d allowed herself to bring on this trip. Back home in her lock box, she had almost thirty dollars. Most of that was from the money she’d made during the lemonade war, or at least what was left over after she made that $104 contribution to the Animal Rescue League. ("You don’t have to give as much as I did," Megan had said, but Jessie had insisted. "I said I was going to, and I’m going to," she said, even though it almost killed her to give all that money away―and to animals!) But no matter how enticing everything in the Crossroads Store looked to her (a squirrel nutcracker! fake mustaches!), Jessie wasn’t about to spend thirty dollars. She liked to have money saved. Just in case. After using the bathroom, she walked over to where Evan was standing, halfway between the deli and the bakery. He was looking at fancy gift bags of candy, all done up with curlicue ribbons. "Look!" he said, holding up a bag. It was a bag of chocolate-covered blueberries, named Moose Droppings. "Want some?" he asked, dangling the bag in front of her face. "That is so gross!" Jessie said. But she loved it. The candy really did look exactly like moose droppings, only smaller. On closer inspection, she saw that there were also chocolate-covered cranberries and chocolate-covered raisins. "Are you going to get a bag? We could split one. Which one do you think is the best?" But Evan had wandered off and wasn’t listening to her anymore. Jessie put the bag back on the shelf and walked over to the corner of the store devoted to jigsaw puzzles. There were a dozen puzzles to choose from, but Jessie’s eyes went immediately to the one that was a picture of jellybeans. The brightly colored candies looked like rocks on a pebbly beach, and Jessie knew the puzzle would be hard to do. It had a thousand pieces! "Jessie, are you ready?" asked her mother, shoving a few dollars back into her wallet after paying for the gas. "Can we get this? Please?" asked Jessie, pulling the jellybean puzzle down from the shelf. "For Grandma?" Jessie and Grandma always worked on jigsaw puzzles when the family visited, and Jessie often brought a new puzzle for them to try. They had never done a thousand-piece puzzle, though. Jessie’s mom paused, the money still hanging out from her wallet. Jessie knew her mom had to be careful with money, and she tried hard not to ask for things she didn’t need. "I have five dollars," said Jessie. "I could chip in." Mrs. Treski took the puzzle and said, "It’s a good idea, Jess. You and Grandma can work on it when she gets home from the hospital." Jessie smiled, glad she could have the puzzle without spending her own money, and turned to the circular spinning postcard rack that was next to the jigsaw puzzles. There were eight columns of cards, and Jessie liked to make the rack squeak as she turned it slowly. She started at the top and began to work her way straight down one column, and then went back up to the top of the next column. She didn’t want to miss a single card. "Jess, can we go now?" asked her mother, looking through the various compartments of her wallet as if money would magically appear if she looked hard enough. "No, I’m looking at the cards," said Jessie. "You must own every card on that rack." "Sometimes they have a new one," said Jessie. "Five minutes, okay? Five minutes, I want to be pulling out of the parking lot." Mrs. Treski walked off to the checkout counter to pay for the puzzle. Why was her mom so impatient? Usually she loved to stop at the Crossroads, but this time it was all about making good time and getting back on the road. Well, Jessie wasn’t going to be rushed. She finished looking at the second column of postcards, and then started on the third. "Ever been there?" Jessie looked up. An old man with a stubbly beard was squinting through his glasses at a postcard that showed the Olympic Stadium in Lake Placid. Jessie noticed that the glasses sat crooked on his face. "The stadium where they had the Olympics? Ever been there?" Jessie shook her head. "No." The man tapped the card. "I was there in 1980 and 1932. Yes, I was. I saw Sonja Henie win the gold medal for figure skating. Do you believe that?" He nodded his head up and down as if he could make her do the same. Wow, 1932! How could anyone be that old? Jessie looked closely at the man standing beside her. He started to scratch his face like he had a bad rash. "Were you in the Olympics?" she asked. "No!" said the man, "but I had dreams." He was nodding his head more vigorously now―nodding and scratching―and his eyes were locked on the far end of the store. "Hey, Jess, come on," said Evan, grabbing hold of one elbow and pulling her toward the door. "I’m not done!" she said. But Evan didn’t let go of her until they were outside. When Jessie looked back through the window, she saw that the man was still scratching his face and talking, even though no one was near. "That guy was crazy," Evan said, matter-of-factly. "How do you know?" asked Jessie, looking up at her big brother. Evan shrugged and put his headphones back on. "You can just tell." But Jessie couldn’t tell. It hadn’t occurred to her that there was anything wrong with the old man. Why did old people get like that? Did something break down inside their heads, the way a shoelace eventually snaps after being tied too many times? And how exactly did Evan know? As soon as they got back on the highway, it started to snow. At first the flakes were large and wet, sticking for an instant to the windshield like giant white moths before dissolving into quarter size drops of water. Then the snow became steadier and more fierce, and the ground on either side of the highway turned white and shapeless. It was dusk when they pulled up to the end of Grandma’s long, winding driveway and got their first look at the house. "Oh my," said Mrs. Treski, turning off the ignition and letting the car lights die.

If there were more stars, I would give them! I am in love with the Lemonade War Books, and this is by far my favorite of the series. In addition to highlighting the relationship between a brother and his sister (who is assumed to have Aspergers), Jacqueline Davies introduces another character most likely on the autism spectrum. Within this one little book, children learn about work ethic, responsibility, family tradition, animal cruelty, bullying, and dealing with dementia - all in terms my 7-yr-old could easily understand. What a WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL book. I would suggest reading this aloud with your children to answer questions about these issues and to bring your family closer. <3

We love this whole series. The writing is accessible for almost all third grade readers (which is great for my son who is just starting to get a hang of it) but story lines are far more compelling, and characters are more developed than standard stories written at this level. I cried at the end of the Bell Bandit, and when we finished The Magic Trap, my son said he hoped there would be another because it felt like Evan and Jessie were his friends and he was going to miss them. Jacqueline Davies does a phenomenal job of capturing what it is like to be a kid now. I volunteer in my son's school and noticed a number of details which are true of my son's experience now, but were not so true when I was a kid. The books touch on issues that effect kids greatly and does so in a way that does not overwhelm them, does not patronize them, but rather gives them a framework to analyze their own experiences and voice their own thoughts. After reading the Bell Bandit, I noticed an improvement in my son's demonstration of empathy and consideration. After reading The Candy Smash, my son felt comfortable talking about who he had a crush on and what having a crush and navigating the social complexities of third grade was like for him. He is in general a very private kid, so this was a rare glimpse into his feelings. I feel like Jacqueline Davies gave my family a rare gift with this series, and I will be forever grateful to her.

Seriously? What can you say about Jacqueline Davies's "Lemonade Wars" series that hasn't already been said? My 10-year old son who is just "okay" with reading, really enjoyed the humor in these books. The author teaches the reader so many subtle lessons about marketing, money, advertising, etc. It was just such a neat book, we had to get the rest of the series!!!

Did not feel the torturing of the frog was necessary. A few students found it a little disturbing.

I love this book the bell bandit really explains the feelings of losing something really important to you and then trying to get it back.Yahli.

My grandsons favorite reading. Exciting and keeps him interested. A flashlight under the covers on a school night when it’s expected that he is sleeping is a clear indication of a super series for young readers. Arrived fast and in good condition.

My kids love this series because the characters are so real to them. They talk about the characters and all the drama while they are reading and after they read each of the books in the series, like the characters are real.

My daughter always loved being read to but was never and avid reader herself. Her 5th grade teacher recommended this series to her and she cruises through these books as she thoroughly enjoys them. I'm looking for other books and/or series that can keep her reading as this on has.

I have dabbled in many mediums but have never had any training or study program. This book is it! As I have been reading the thing that I like best is that it tells you why and why not.People say, "Experience is the best teacher" but I have found the corollary - Experience may be the best teacher but it is also the most expensive". Say you happen to paint a beautiful picture but you didn't prime the "support" (anything you paint ON)...and then in a couple of years it start falling apart from the underside THEN you'll be sorry you hadn't known....or you put a lot of thinner ON thick paint and the thinner layer dries way faster and the oil never dries. Or you are sketching with a paint extremely thinned with terp and you love the effect and so decide to leave it. With time you sadly discover that that thinned paint was not stable and can be dusted off, ruining your masterpiece. This book is like a college course of the basics. But it still lets you have the basics and gets you started before you have to learn it all. I did not give it a five because as I was writing this review I realized that so many topics I went to refer to were not in the index. Examples: Primer, yellowing paint, cracking paint...still I recommend this for anyone who wants to learn all aspects, but especially for beginners - it is quite comprehensive.BUT NOW A YEAR LATER I find I don't open it at all BECAUSE there is not an adequate index.

This book should be everyone's first instructional text regarding oil painting! I can't think of another "how to" book on the subject that is even close to offering as much, and in such an easy to understand manner. Granted, once you have "mastered" this issue, you will need to go deeper somewhere else. The only downside is the title and humiliating cover that everyone on the street recognizes (you don't want to walk in the front door of your local Museum of Modern Art with one of these beauties under your arm!) - if you are a beginner, amateur, or it has been a long time since you picked up a brush....buy it, you'll love it, it is probably exactly what you have been looking for.

I did oil paintings in the past without any idea of the fundamentals. I have selected this book because of good reviews to make myself more knowledgeable in painting. I found this book amazingly helpful. It gives a good idea of what should and should not do in painting. I like the gradual step by step and easy approach to the more advanced topics. I read this book at a stretch and gained a lot of valuable knowledge about proper painting. A must read book for a beginner.

I live in Thailand, so not many good art classes in english here,so this book has helped me with all the basic stuff, setting up a studio, colour mixing, what to buy when first starting out. What not to buy. I hesitated to buy the book as I knew how to copy a painting, but could not get started on my own work. This book gives great practical info. so that you can "teach your self". Much easier than trying to watch tutorials on line, and far more fun than going to a bad art class with a mediocre teacher. Highly recommend !

This book got me started with oil painting and gave me the confidence to dive in. It provided list of materials, theory, practical tips, exercises and more. Even experienced painters decided to purchase after reviewing my copy. It was a perfect way to start and I look forward to many years of referring back to "Dummies!" Another winner in the invaluable series.

The authors try to simplify the process of oil painting, and for the most part, succeed in doing so. They don't try to impress the reader with big words. When they use one, they explain it with smaller ones. They explain nearly every aspect of creating a painting. I borrowed this book from the public library and then bought my own copy. The older one, from the library, had a yellow page at the front of the book that was called a cheat-sheet. It contained a color wheel and a color chart. The copy that I purchased did not nave the cheat-sheet. There is a color wheel midway through the book, but it is smaller than the other one. Try to find the older book, with the yellow page.

As someone new to oil painting, I wanted a book that would help me familiarize myself with terminology and techniques as well as the various tools to use. This book generally met my needs.

Very helpful, it has been a long time since I have painted and this helped me to get started again.

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2-There is only one castle left in the world and it stands in the middle of a small town with a lone guard in its watchtower. Nobody comes out of this imposing structure and nobody goes in. Enter Ibb, an adventurous young girl with a healthy dose of curiosity. When she asks what lives behind the walls, she gets a variety of frightening theories. Her teacher believes monsters reside there, a friend opines it must be giants, while her grandfather insists on snakes. Ibb entertains these fantastical thoughts (and the illustrations do them justice) but she maintains a sense of optimism that it "could be something else." With mounting tension, Ibb knocks on the castle door and then runs away in terror. Shortly thereafter, the girl receives an invitation to visit the castle. Readers soon learn that while monsters and giants do live there, things are not quite as they were envisioned by the townsfolk. Instead, there is a delightful garden with topiaries shaped like dragons and a garden bursting with good things to eat. In the end, Ibb convinces the guard to venture out and share the fruits of his labor. Appealing illustrations done in pen-and-ink and watercolor round out this stellar read-aloud and add to its subtle humor. VERDICT This debut picture book deserves a place in most collections. Strongly recommended for purchase.-Amy Nolan, St. Joseph Public Library, MIα(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

A story to explore giving the unknown a chance, getting to know something before we judge. Ibb is a brave&kind girl who won’t let other people’s opinions get in the way of making new friends & having new experiences.Ibb repeatedly thinks“Maybe it’s something terrible. Could it be something else?”May we all be as open minded as Ibb when faced with the unknown & give it a chance! I love her backpack covered with patches & keychains, & her oversized boots! This story also brings young and old together, and how we can all learn from each other regardless of age, and the power of community.

My daughter identified with Ibb the strong young protagonist who takes a chance to build a more hospitable community where castle walls frame bridges between people of good will.

An inquisitive girl searches for answers in this wonderfully written and dynamically illustrated story that teaches kids to follow their dreams. My kids request it regularly and are constantly referencing it.

The story is well told and the illustrations are richly done and enhance the story. It has been great to share with our grandchildren.

Everyone should add this to their list of great read-alouds.

Kids love the story

I was so excited to see that librarian and THE YARN creator, Travis Jonker had written a book. I was even more excited to see how wonderful it turned out. Illustrated by Mark Pett, we are taken to the last standing castle and meet a little girl named Ibb whose curiosity about what lies behind those walls leads to surprises for everyone. A great book for predicting and inferring that will invite readers to go back and read again.

Ibb is a beautiful, strong protagonist who offers friendship. She also uses this strength to bind her community together and teach everyone an important lesson in inclusion. Love the message!

Truman, by David McCullough

Amazon.com Review

This warm biography of Harry Truman is both an historical evaluation of his presidency and a paean to the man's rock-solid American values. Truman was a compromise candidate for vice president, almost an accidental president after Roosevelt's death 12 weeks into his fourth term. Truman's stunning come-from-behind victory in the 1948 election showed how his personal qualities of integrity and straightforwardness were appreciated by ordinary Americans, perhaps, as McCullough notes, because he was one himself. His presidency was dominated by enormously controversial issues: he dropped the atomic bomb on Japan, established anti-Communism as the bedrock of American foreign policy, and sent U.S. troops into the Korean War. In this winner of the 1993 Pulitzer Prize, McCullough argues that history has validated most of Truman's war-time and Cold War decisions.

From Publishers Weekly

Cracker-barrel plain in speech and looks, this seemingly ordinary man turned out to be one of our most dynamic presidents. It was Harry S. Truman who ordered the atomic bomb dropped, halted Communists in Turkey and Greece, initiated the Marshall Plan, NATO and the Berlin Airlift, ordered desegregation of the armed forces, established the CIA and the Defense Department, committed U.S. forces to Korea and upheld the principle of civilian control over the military by firing Gen. Douglas MacArthur. McCullough ( Mornings on Horseback ) has written a surefooted, highly satisfying biography of the 33rd president, one that not only conveys in rich detail Truman's accomplishments as a politician and statesman, but also reveals the character and personality of this constantly-surprising man--as schoolboy, farmer, soldier, merchant, county judge, senator, vice president and chief executive. The book relates how Truman (1884-1972) overcame the stigma of business failure and debt (as well as the accusation that he was "bellboy" to Kansas City's Pendergast machine) and acquired a reputation for honesty, reliability and common sense. McCullough pays considerable attention to Truman's family, especially his fervent and touching courtship of Bess Wallace, the idolized love of his life. Her mother never felt Truman was good enough for her daughter, even after he became president. The book's re-creation of the 1948 presidential campaign, during which Newsweek 's poll of 50 political writers predicted that the incumbent would lose the election to Thomas Dewey, is the most complete account of that surprise victory to date. The book is an impressive tribute to a man whose brisk cheerfulness and self-confidence were combined with a God-fearing humility; a great and good man who, in McCullough's opinion, was a great president. David McCullough's Pulitzer Prize winning biography "Truman" is undoubtedly the best Presidential biography I've read in recent years. Written in a graceful and powerfully eloquent style, it is meticulously researched, and accurately captures the essence of the man who was the 33rd President of the United States.McCullough challenges a commonly held view of history that Harry S Truman was nothing more than a common man of mediocre abilities who became President almost by accident, and owed his political success to his loyalty to the Democratic party and the Kansas City political bosses. By tracing the life of this self-made man - a farmer, artillery captain during World War I, haberdasher, local politician, U.S. Senator, Vice President, and ultimately President of the United States - the author acquaints the reader with a highly intelligent, competent and complex man. Here is seen the highly principled politician whose ability to judge the character of others enabled him to select outstanding men like Dean Acheson and George Marshall to serve in his administration; a Chief Executive capable of making some of the most momentous decisions of the twentieth century, such as ordering the use of the atomic bomb against Japan in 1945, integrating the Armed Forces in 1948, and firing General Douglas MacArthur in 1951. But, here also is seen a man who remained loyal to personal friends and Democratic party bosses and tolerant of their often disreputable activities; and who, in a fit of petty anger, authored a threatening letter to a music critic who wrote unfavorably about his daughter."Truman" is above all a fair and balanced portrait of one of the most unique and greatest of American Presidents. In my view, this extraordinarily well written book is destined to be the biography of Harry S Truman against which all others will be measured. Highly recommended!

I have read many of David McCullough's books, only two more to go, but this one was the absolute best. He brought Truman to life for me. He made that whole era, WW! into the Korean War come alive. Every character, every scene, was like I knew exactly what he was talking about. His love of Bess and then his daughter...his protection of the privacy of his family....his loyalty...this was the best read for me and, believe me, I loved The Great Bridge and the story of the Panama Canal...Path Between the Seas....but Truman was so very special. If you have a love of history you will enjoy this book from beginning to end and don't let the length of it discourage you from starting it because it just flies by. When I finished it I felt that I had laid to rest my very best friend. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.

David McCullough's Truman is a long book but well worth the read. It covers Truman's life from his ancestors on the frontier to his death and everything in between. McCullough ties the history of Truman's ancestors, childhood, family life, farm experience, business attempts, World War I military service, political life to explain what Truman did and why as President. It also delves into Truman's political campaigns on all levels, which I found truly fascinating. This really is an informative book that transformed my understanding of Harry Truman and the Truman presidency. McCullough's writing style is vivid and engaging, it really is hard to put down once you get started.I couldn't help drawing parallels between the present and the past while reading this book - particularly with the 2016 Presidential campaign and how Clinton and Trump campaigned compared to how Truman campaign and our current problems in Korea. I couldn't help contrasting the personalities of Truman and Trump, either.I highly recommend Truman; it's a fascinating, informative, well written biography of a President who was in office during a highly important, trans-formative period of United States History.

Probably everything's been said about this book that I want to say, but I have to say that I wonder how I went all these years without realizing what an engaging historian and writer Mr. McCullough is. Truman reads like a novel. As a youngster, I used to look at pictures of Truman, hear him speak, and wonder how such a seemingly drab little man could be our president. So if my husband hadn't already read and recommended the book, I probably wouldn't have even started it. But after racing through this biography -- by no means a hagiography -- I long for a candidate like Truman in the 2016 election. Moreover, it was a kind of nostalgia trip for me, since I was brought up by a father whose basic values paralleled Truman's, and many of his now old-fashioned speech mannerisms reminded me of the way people spoke when I was growing up. I'll certainly be moving on to the author's other books even if I don't think the topic would appeal to me.

I’ve been on a big presidential kick lately with the 2016 Presidential Election around a month away. So with that in mind, I will offer my thoughts on Truman. On the positive, I think he did a magnificent job covering Harry Truman as far as giving the reader the broad experience of his life before, during, and after the presidency. For my money, you can’t get any better than the sections on the events leading up to the firing of Douglas Macarthur and his defeat of Thomas Dewey in 1948.I felt like while it was a well-written biography that kept me engaged through 1000 pages, I felt like it reinforced the popular image of Harry Truman as a plain spoken man of principles who knew how to make the tough decisions and made them. While there is certainly nothing wrong with it, it felt like anything that didn’t compete was glossed over like his association with the Pendergast Machine in Missouri or the depth of his feelings for FDR, I thought this could’ve added a little more depth because many people already understand the popular perception of Harry Truman.Well written, but largely reinforcing the “popular” image of Harry Truman.

This book starts off with a good premise: successful on-camera acting is dependent on an actor's awareness and control of emotions -- specifically, emotions expressed on his or her face. Unfortunately, the book contains almost zero practical advice to improve your acting. It's all fluff and vaguely scientific filler, leading to an advertisement for the author's second book, which apparently contains all the actual acting tips. It's a bait-and-switch. Don't fall for it.Here's what you'll get from this book. It discusses the 7 universal emotions (surprise, fear, anger, disgust, sadness, happiness and contempt) and says that all emotions are made up combinations and varying degrees of these. Fair enough. It describes why an actor's face may not accurately reflect his/her inner emotions (facial structure, cultural/familial emotional idiosyncrasies, etc.). It breaks down common misconceptions about on-camera acting ("it's all in the eyes" -- no, obviously emotions are not literally contained in your eyeballs, "just think the thought and the camera will see it" -- no, if there's no emotional attachment to a thought, the camera won't register anything). All of this is ok information, although it's mostly common sense. There is nothing here that you will be surprised by.This book contains two exercises. Yes. Two. The first: make an angry face by jutting your chin and squeezing your lips. The second: make a disgusted face and shake your head "no." Why aren't there more exercises? Why no practical advice? Because, like I said, the author has left all of that in his second book -- the final chapter of this book is just a long advertisement for it.There are a lot of 5 star ratings here. I assume they are from his students or friends, who've been encouraged to leave glowing reviews. Or they are from people interested in acting, looking for a fun, easy read. It is a fun, easy read. But if you are looking to become a better actor, this book will not help you.

I rarely feel blindsided by a book, but I was by "Face to Face." It was, as Shakespeare wrote, "full of sound and fury signifying nothing."The closer I got to the end, the more I began to suspect I'd been had... and I was. The author extended a ten-page essay into a (supposedly) instructive book that merely set the reader up to buy book two. It's akin to offering a sneak preview of a new film and then showing the audience the trailer for 90 minutes.Rather than providing any useful or practical instruction, it simply painted and propped the set, getting it ready for the actors to enter. Except they never did. It was all foreplay and no sex. And, no, after this experience, I'm not buying book two.

This book offers a great explanation of how you might not be communicating with your audience. It also explains why it may be happening: cultural and family upbringing, habitual use of certain facial expressions and corresponding muscles, personality and natural style of expressiveness, etc. The photos and muscle diagrams accompanying the explanations were very interesting. The current Amazon book description says it includes exercises, however. Not so much. I was looking forward to those in particular, but at the end of the book, it simply explains what exercises will be covered in the NEXT book, which isn't out yet. And then the book ends. Those promised exercises were why I was so interested in the book!I'm still giving it 4 stars, however, because for the very low price currently available, the information is worthwhile. The author clearly knows his subject extremely well. I look forward to that next book. I hope it is released soon.

This book is like a chunk of gold ore, there's some useful stuff in a big hunk of debris. The book is often self referential and redundant. Each chapter got me more excited to get to the last few chapters and learn this process... The book had other plans. The entire book (which could be a pamphlet if all of the redundancy and fluff was removed) is really just a long advertising pitch for his yet-unreleased book that is said to contain the real information i bought THIS book for. I give it 2 stars instead of 1 because it taught me a few things and got me looking at my physicality in a new light, but it really isn't a helpful book overall, there's no deep dive, no exercises, etc. It's a big redundant tease... Makes me want his next book, but also makes me wary of this author and thus less likely to buy it.

I'm a local actor in DC. Mostly stage. I had read Emotions Revealed a few years ago which this is partially based on and thought it somewhat applied to acting. Plus, the common advice that acting for the camera is the same as stage only smaller always seemed simplistic. This book fills in a lot of gaps in that idea. Interestingly it talks about the genetic inheritance plus the childhood aquisition of automatic facial expressions. Lots of food for thought.

Amazon.com Review

"Did you ever fly a kite in bed? Did you ever walk with ten cats on your head?" Such are the profound, philosophical queries posed in this well-loved classic by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel. While many rhymes in this couplet collection resemble sphinx-worthy riddles, Seuss's intention is clear: teach children to read in a way that is both entertaining and educational. It matters little that each wonderful vignette has nothing to do with the one that follows. (We move seamlessly from a one-humped Wump and Mister Gump to yellow pets called the Zeds with one hair upon their heads.) Children today will be as entranced by these ridiculous rhymes as they have been since the book's original publication in 1960--so amused and enchanted, in fact, they may not even notice they are learning to read! (Ages 4 to 8)

This is a really fun book for young kids, and the copy was in perfect condition. Highly recommended!

Um, really? This is the Doctor. The master of Rhyme. The Sultan of Salubrication. If you don't have a copy for your child, your grandchild, the neighbor kid, and your dog, you should be ashamed.

I loved reading this book to my kids who, in turn, loved the book. I bought six copies recently for an ESL class I'm teaching with the stated purpose that the students would study it until they could read it to their children or grandchildren. It's a great hit in my varied group from Africa and Central Asia. We've had great fun with rhyming and rhythm, story line, and artwork.

“One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish” was one of my favorite books as a child. I grew up infatuated with rhyming and this book amazed me. Seuss introduces many odd characters through the book and laces their odd situations with even odd-er (if you will) rhymes. The way he writes is ‘child-ish’. He writes in simple english but loves to throw in made up names accompanied by illustrations of made up characters. “ Bump! Bump! Bump! Did you ever ride a Wump?” (Seuss12) A Wump, actually, is a Camel-esque animal with excess hair and a ‘happy’ posture. Illustration and font choice play a huge role in children’s literature. In most children’s books, you'll find that many are filled with pictures and silly fonts that are meant to draw a child’s attention to the book. Seuss follows close to this guide with his illustrations but strays away when it comes to the font choice. It seems like He used the default font that came on whatever word-processor his publisher used. If I had to guess, this may be because the book is aimed more at the parent reading the book to the child. I believe that the simple font choice also opens up more space for the child’s imagination to run wild with the illustrations. Being one of Seuss’ more famous books, it’s odd that there is no real theme, recurring at least, that I can find. Seuss only spends one to three pages on each set of characters and then completely turns 180 degrees to another set of characters and a whole different story line. Really, the book is made up of a lot of story segments that loosely, if at all, tie in to each other. The tone of this work is “playful” (the best way I could think of to describe it). “It’s fun to sing if you sing with a Ying. My Ying can sing like anything. I sing high and my Ying sings low, and we are not too bad, you know.” ( Seuss23) As a kid I loved hearing this book read to me. My parents would always change their voices to the character they were reading and always put extra emphasis on the rhymes and the made-up words.

I have read my 58 year old (1960) edition of this book to our grandchildren practically every night they are with us. Our special needs grandchild, who can't read sentences yet, quotes it to me exactly word-for-word, while I turn the pages - several times each night! This year my 1Fish 2Fish finally started completely falling apart - then we found this one. It is exactly EXACTLY like the original. And maybe in 58 more years will be read by my grandchildren's grandchildren! Some works of literature are timeless. This is one of them!

Love Dr. Seuss books, in particular this one. My 3 year old loves, loves this book. Since receiving it, it's been read a hundred times and she never gets tired of it.

This was one of my kid's favorite books during bedtime story time when they were little. So much so that I still have parts memorized, lol. Now my grandbabies love it. ♡

I read this book to my daughters as babies and it was one of first books they learned to read. Now I’m reading it to my grandson. Dr Seuss’s books are timeless.

Purchased as part of my four year old nephew's Christmas gift. My now teen daughter loved this book when they were his age and I know he will too
