This book was issued in 2017, yet the author only takes us through the events of Klaus Barbie's life history up to 1984 when the book was originally published and Barbie was sitting in a French prison. With the re-issuance of the book, it would have been nice, even expected, that that an epilogue outlining the outcome of Barbie's trial, conviction, and sentencing would have been included by the still active author. The book ended abruptly at about 80% and the rest of the book was taken up by the bibliography. While it should have been foot noted, the bibliography was a reasonable secondary effort. However, I still can't get past the fact that I feel boondoggled by the author with this re-issuance. I purchased this book to find out what happened to Barbie, including the ending, which was lacking. While much of the book provides good insight into the Butcher of Lyon, (not Lyons) it really bogs down in the middle when the USA uses Barbie as an intelligence agent during the first years of the cold war with Russia. There are so many players named, so many opportunities to return Barbie to France by the U.S. to stand trial and none of the arguments posited against it hold any water. Once again, we waged war but didn't bother to clean up the massive outcome. So many of the Nazi regime walked out of the war and into a wonderful life, living out their time either in Germany or South America until they died of old age, often taking the spoils of war (stolen Jewish money, jewels, paintings, etc.) with them to ease the pigs through their later years. In this case, America aided and abetted this Nazi pig with money, women, liquor, and good food instead of doing the right thing and letting him answer for his war crimes. Terribly disgusting to read about the part we played in Barbie's life after the Final Solution and those who contributed to this miasma will definitely pay their final dues. While this appears to be an accurate forecasting of Barbie's life, I will not excuse a book re-issuance that does not update itself--hence, the low rating. Otherwise, the coverage of his life and escapades seemed well documented and Bower often discussed areas that were in conflict. This is not the first book that I've purchased that has been re-issued but not updated and I believe Amazon needs to clarify in their description that it is not an updated version. While I would recommend this book as background, I would not recommend it as the definitive story of Barbie's life.
I read this book for research purposes and it was incredibly informative, given that it was written in 1984, when Barbie was just indicted for his war crimes, and many of the documents that are now available to the biographers still weren’t declassified. The book tells Barbie’s full life story, starting with his childhood (which was not a particularly happy one) and his decision to join the SS (more out of necessity, by the way: his own grandfather refused to give him any of his inheritance after Barbie’s father’s death due to Barbie being the illegitimately born child, thus rendering Klaus’s dream of entering the university and becoming an archaeologist or a lawyer, impossible) and finishing with Barbie’s extradition to France and his indictment.Based on Barbie’s own confessions and witnesses’ accounts, the author paints an accurate picture of what was going on in Lyon during Barbie’s Gestapo reign there, and the war with the Resistance which he waged on a nearly daily basis. Retracing Barbie’s activities step by step, the author presents us a portrait of not just a mere bureaucrat that Barbie was trying to present himself in 1984, but a cunning, sharp, ruthless Gestapo chief, who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals.Another fascinating part about this biography is Barbie’s relationship with his American handlers from the CIC after the war, and how he managed to charm nearly every single one of them to the point, where they outright refused to extradite him to the French and smuggled him to South America via the infamous Rat Line instead. Incredibly riveting and informative, this biography is a must-read for all WW2 history buffs.
A well researched piece on The Butcher of Lyons. Could be regarded as a cliff hanger as the book has not been updated to include the circumstances of his death by cancer in prison at the age of 77. I was raised with the naive belief that the denazification of Germany was a success. Imagine my surprise to discover that so many kept their uniforms in the closet waiting for the birth of the Fourth Reich. Disappointing to read about the French collaborators; so many of them. With all that, the US using Barbie to combat Communism seems to be disproportionately belabored, while in comparison, Barbie's involvement with drug trafficking and the killing of Che was just touched upon in passing. Karma did catch up with Klaus in his family life, but all in all, for an inherently evil man, he had a long and fulfilling life up until his incarceration. The slant of the book does not reflect that Tom Bower has a Jewish background, but as for being an Englishman, well- - - -
This is a searching biography of a Nazi killer who got away with it, having had help from the U.S. Government because it needed the expertise of Barbie and other Nazis in the cold war against the Soviet Union. The U.S. used Barbie's talents in intelligence gathering to promote its own agenda during this time, as it used other Nazi specialists. Barbie had been a member of the Gestapo, the best counter-intelligence police in the history of the world, and his professionalism served the U.S. well.
It is so unbelievable to me that people like Barbie feel they did nothing wrong. This book gave me an insight into the mind of a madman. I always had an interest in the Pacific operation of WW2, but after reading books like this, I have seen the horrors that so many innocent families endured. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to see how these monsters committed terrible crimes and have no remorse.
And America collaborated with th monster after the war! How could our officials not be charged for hair oring a war criminal?
