This is the best book about how we have came to have so many young black men in jail and prison. The statistics are familiar but shocking - to take one as an example, roughly 30% of young black men that are high school dropouts are *currently* in jail or prison. That's a stunning failure for those men, of course, but it's a failure for the rest of our society as well. Many analysts point to white racism or the war on drugs as the causes of that incarceration, and they're of course not totally wrong. But Forman's contribution is to point out incompleteness of that narrative, as the incarceration boom had complicated origins.There are two of those additional factors that Forman analyzes with unique skill and detail. The first is the get-tough-on-crime stance taken by many black politicians and civic leaders in the 1980s and 1990s, These were times when the crack epidemic wrought particular havoc in the black community in Washington, DC - on which Forman focuses - and which created a demand for get-tough policies by the black middle class that was disproportionately the victim of crack-fueled crime. The second is the trend towards pretextual searches of cars in Washington - Eric Holder's version of Rudy Giuliani's stop-and-frisk - which was designed to reduce gun possession in DC. Those searches were deliberately executed with greater vigor in poor, black neighborhoods, and the result was that many poor blacks were arrested for minor drug offenses when officers found marijuana in their cars while looking for guns. It's a Greek tragedy, and it reminded me favorably of Randy Shilts' brilliant treatment of the AIDS epidemic in And The Band Played On.Forman's background as a former public defender in DC is a great strength of the book, but it also makes the narrative somewhat DC-centric. Incarceration increased throughout the country - were the political and justice dynamics the same in Mississippi and Ohio, to take two examples, as they were in DC. That remains an open question. The book is frustrating, too, in that Forman offers no easy cure for the problems. More drug treatment programs, more constructive diversion programs for youthful offenders, more nuanced reading of arrest records by current and prospective employers? Those would all be good, to be sure, but I left this book feeling that it would take these things, and at least a handful of similarly benign trends, before we will really get a handle on these problems. But it is to Forman's credit that he offers no silver bullet for the problems. Life is sadly frustrating at times.

James Forman has done a masterful job documenting the political, social and criminal justice dynamics of the mass arrest and incarceration period, largely fueled by the crack cocaine epidemic. It’s a complex dynamic that he describes accurately and fairly. This book serves as an important corrective to some of today’s collective amnesia about how we got to the point where we are today with regard to policing and incarceration, and the disparate impact it has had on lower-class African American communities. Forman appropriately focuses on the strategic choices made—by police, prosecutors, judges, and political leaders—about how best to address the crack cocaine trafficking and attendant violence. A toxic combination of racial and class bias, political opportunism, genuine fear, and lack of imagination fueled the mass-arrest-and-incarceration strategy. It is to be hoped that we have learned lessons about the failures of that strategy, and that they will not be forgotten or ignored when future social problems present themselves. Police, prosecutors, and others must better appreciate that there are strategic choices to be made about how best to address public-safety problems, and that those choices have important implications for both effectiveness and fairness. Forman's book can help encourage police and prosecution leaders to be more adamant about deliberating these choices openly and honestly. I hope this book gets the attention it richly deserves.

A different take on modern day mass incarceration, Dr. Forman examines its beginnings with harsh minimum mandatory sentences for tough gun and drug laws in Washington DC, enacted and doubled down on by black police and lawmakers and largely supported by their communities.It goes deeper than that, though, and argued, that today's mass incarceration came about by a series of well intentioned laws and policies to combat drug and gun violence in America's urban area said. Harsh laws we're not backed up by promises to examine and fix root causes, for example.One of many good reads to better understand the current state of our criminal justice system and the rod that led us here.

Brent had spent so much time trying to find Jarrett after that night at the club, he was thrilled and shocked that Jarrett had been so close for so long and their paths had never crossed. Nosy busy bodies, trust issues and a lot of stubbornness nearly kept them apart forever. Emery's lack of being able to keep a crucial secret helped heal her family. The scene that Jarrett and Brent walked in on at the reception involving Tate and Chasen had me laughing so hard at Jarrett's reaction.'I received an ARC of this book and voluntarily reviewed it.

There are many things one may expect when going in to meet with one's child's teacher. That said teacher will be your child's other parent is not usually one of those things. Jarrett and Brent had a night eight years before and then they lose contact. When Jarrett calls Brent in to talk about some issues with his daughter they are surprised to find out that they have more in common in relation to the well-being of this child than they realized. This was a cool second chance story not only for the parents but it is a chance for the child as well at a more complete family.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is a sweet story with a bit of predictability on the part of one main character. Both Jarratt and Brent are fully realized and likeable characters. There are some editing, grammar, spelling issues but they don't detract from the story. I have a quibble with Jarratt's work situation which isn't resolved, at least not in print, after he and Brent get back together. This seemed strange after the school leadership and some staff were so hostile.

(Review with spoilers)First book in the series. I loved the romance and I recommend it.Jarrett's pack is cursed. They can't have alpha children unless they find their fated mates. He found his years ago, but they only had one night together. They separated and he has feared that he would never see him again. Until they meet unexpectedly.I love Jarrett and Brent. The two are very much alike. Good men, romantic, sweet. They've both been dreaming of a family for years, and they were afraid they wouldn't be able to fulfill their dreams.I love that, when they recognize each other, they don't lie. Jarrett asks if Emery is his daughter and Brent says she is. He adds that he looked for him, but couldn't find him, and Jarrett believes him. He also wanted to see him again. If they had at least told each other their names, it would have been easier for them to find each other.I love their connection. It surged when they met, and it hasn't broken during the years they've been apart. It's not just something physical. They see the other as he really is.I love the relationship Brent and Emery have, their love, and how he tries to educate her as best as he can, even though he knows she needs more than he can teach her. He isn't an alpha like her.I also love the relationship that develops between Jarrett and Emery. He noticed a connection between them, but he believed it was because the two are werewolves, not because they are family. But I think it would have been better if they had slowed things down with her. I didn't want them lying to her, but to take things with calm.I love Jarrett's brothers, and I also love Tate.

The only explanation he can come up with is that he may have met his fated mate that night. He regrets everyday not getting the omega’s information.Brent is a single omega father raising an alpha daughter. He remembers the night she was conceived and wishes more than ever that he had that alpha with him to help out with his rambunctious daughter control her alpha instincts.Jarrett and Brent are brought together by their daughter and it was like no time passed at all. The same spark is still there after all these years.They’re discovering each other all over again and this time around neither of them wants to lose touch. They feel like they’ve lost so much time and have a lot to make up for.I really enjoyed this story. I wish there was more background information about Jarrett’s pack, Furbitten Falls. There was a brief mention of its history but it was vague and felt I was missing something. Other than that I enjoyed the story and watching Jarrett and Brent rediscover each other.I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the story of Jarrett and Brent. Jarrett was an alpha and he met his fated mate one night at a club when they had a one night stand. Eight years later, Jarrett was haunted by the omega he could never find again. Now Jarrett was a teacher and a little girl, Emery, in his class was having problems with being an alpha and acting out. Jarrett called her father Brent in to talk about her and was shocked to see it was his fated mate from years before. Brent was shocked to see Jarrett and knew he had finally found him. Through them talking, Jarrett realized Emery was his daughter. Jarrett now had to decide what he was going to do and if they could be together, but Jarrett could lose his job if it was found out he was involved with a parent of a student. I really enjoyed this story. I liked Jarrett and Brent together. I love how Emery accepted Jarrett as her Dad from the beginning. Jarrett wanted his family and i think he could have been a little more alpha like with his decisions. I think he worried about if they would break up and didn't want to risk his job. I look forward to reading more of this new series. Good one.

ah, joseph mitchell...one of the cornerstones upon which the New Yorker was built.absolutely first rate, timeless writing about all sorts of subjects and a link to a long forgotten and wonderful time in NYC when you could get a 50 cent breakfast at a diner and everybody smoked everywhere and jews on the lower east side sold pickles and the cops were all irish and the women were all dames who weren't allowed in McSorley's . i'm not saying it celebrates sexism, i'm saying it captures new york in the forties and fifties.mitchell seeks out the lesser known aspects of new york life: gypsy families and lazy hot afternoons in the park and street preachers and kooks.his writing is graceful and elegant but simple and direct at the same time. just tells it like it is but with flair and no phony 'look at me! i'm a writer!' stuff.

I pride myself on the amount of reading I have done about New York City but I have to admit that my experience with Joseph Mitchell was extremely limited. I don't know why. It wasn't intentional; it just happened. So, I finally picked up this book, and now, wow! A part of me is full of regret: I had been missing so much. On the other hand, I am experiencing the writing of this great essayist and storyteller for the first time. And as with everything in life that is pleasurable, the first time is usually the best. I am living it up.Joseph Mitchell and his people occupied a New York before my time. (Even though he had passed away when I was quite young, he hadn't published much for years because of his infamous writer's block.) What Mitchell presents is the dirt under New York's fingernails. The characters all live on the cliched fringes of the metropolis. And if they weren't the patrons of McSorley's or some dive or flophouse, they were just as iconic as The Empire State Building or a Lower East Side tenement. As others have mentioned, the Joe Gould essay is as poignant and fascinating as essays get.When I had first heard of Mitchell and his milieu, the words grittiness and realism always seemed to be the adjectives surrounding his work. Immediately, the photographs of the legendary Arthur "Weegee" Fellig came to my mind. However, after reading these tales, this comparison utterly falls on its face. Weegee's works, as much as I admire them, were often staged, and even the ones that weren't have a self-conscious shock value attached. Mitchell's "grittiness" and "realism" is actually naturalist. There is an acceptance, respect and grace to his subjects, and in the writing surrounding the people and places he is describing for us. He had no need to embellish or stage anything. And, for me, a first time reader, this is the biggest source of my enjoyment.Nice meeting you, Mr. Mitchell. And thanks.

One of my favorite collections of true stories from NYC in the mid third of the 20th century. Joe Mitchell was one of the most interesting staff writers at the excellent "New Yorker" magazine. Whatever the subject matter of his stories, I am interested in them to the point where I can't put them down. Since first reading this collection upon its initial printing in about 1992, I have visited NYC 7 times just to walk the streets and visit places that he writes about. (I took in a few shows and museums as well). Much of this New York is gone, but sometimes you look down a lower Manhattan street lined with old buildings and one of his stories comes flooding back. McSorley's wonderful saloon is a good example. From stuff found on the bottom of the harbor to exploring the old abandoned hotel of the title story, to the life and culture of city gypsies and climbing an old clock tower or exploring a freedman's 19th century graveyard on Long Island, I love this collection.

Mr Mitchell is an amazing storyteller. . The titles are unusual, such as "Mr. Hunter's Grave". And "McSorley's Wonderful Saloon". In all of[them, it's as if you were there with him and listening to it all. Most of his stories are from the 1930s and 1940s. The date is listed at theend of each story. I remember visiting Hubert's Museum and Flea Circus on 42nd Street as a Teenager. He describes his visit in"Lady Olga". True story, the Fleas were real. Do not miss a chance to read this book.

If I had to take only five books with me into the next life, this would be one of them.

This is a huge collection of Mitchell's writing -- both fiction and non-fiction. I enjoyed the non-fiction much more, but it is all worth reading.I read it over several weeks, a piece or two at a time, and it was always a pleasure to enter his world. Especially interesting was his piece on Joe Gould, a local character who was supposedly working on a massive work of oral history. In "Professor Sea Gull," Mitchell describes Gould, his project, and his unusual lifestyle. In Mitchell's final published work, "Joe Gould's Secret," he revisits the story after Gould's death. Although he would live thirty more years, it was the last thing Mitchell ever published, making his look into Gould's failure to complete his work even more haunting.Highly recommended to those who enjoy 20th century history, personal profiles, or excellent writing. Mitchell's style is so graceful and easy to read that it is easy to miss how much of a style it really is.

This is one of the masterpieces of American non-fiction. I was having a copy sent to a good friend, a fine writer himself, who had not known of Mitchell or his work before.Unfortunately, the new paperback copy I ordered for him arrived missing every page, including the table of contents, up to page thirteen, my friend reported on receiving the book. (I photocopied and sent to him the missing pages from my own volume of the same edition. But I think Amazon ought to send him a new copy, with all the pages included.)

I liked this book. Was very informative.

This book was so interesting that it was if you were there! Human error galore. The one thing that stood out to me was the binoculars being locked away because the guy with the keys was swapped out at the last minute before sailing. Now I’m no Rhodes Scholar but I do believe that the place they were locked could have been forcibly opened. I was imagining the movie as I was reading this & people playing God on who could & couldn’t get into life boat because of social class was just unthinkable.This tradegy could have been avoided so easily. But, the errors of man stepped in . So, do yourself a favor & get copy of the book & be ready to show all kinds of emotions. One of the very best books put out by Captivating History!

The Titanic. What an amazing piece of human engineering and the largest Maritime disaster still to this day. Nearly 1500 people (mostly those in Steerage who's lives in those days meant less than those in First Class) died. This little book takes a more in depth look at what happened but also tells the stories of some of the people on the ship. I couldn't put it down.

To think this tragedy could have been prevented! An informative and entertaining read! My forte is Ancient History so I really only had Hollywood's version of The Titanic in my data knowledge. To read the actual facts was somewhat horrifying but at the same time, not surprising! Not wanting to spoil the fascinating read, I'll just say it's a guide you don't want to miss!

The sea is a harsh mistress and does not take kindly to fools and arrogance. Men forgot that and people paid the price. A mixture of errors that lead to a great ships sinking. . A great way to learn the truth behind all the myths

I did not know that there was so much information about the sinking, the survivors and those that died. I did not see the 1997 movie( only heard the song) but this nothing like that. This is interesting and well documented. Enjoyable read. I learned a lot.

I used this book to teach myself the basic theory for compressible flow, after focusing on incompressible flow in grad school and having never taken a course on compressible flow. I also got myself a copy of Anderson's Modern Compressible Flow, which I read alongside this text. Since Anderson seems to be one of the more popular texts for the subject, I'll give my thoughts on the two here.I want to say I much preferred this book over Anderson's for two reasons. First, a US edition of Anderson's text costs an order of magnitude more than Liepmann & Roshko (and it certainly isn't an order of magnitude better). But, despite making a big deal about this in the introduction, he relegates a rather small part of the book to these topics. On the other hand, L&R include almost as much information on the chemical reactions found in hypersonic flows. If this is important to you, I still recommend L&R as a primer on compressible flow theory over Anderson, since it will more quickly prepare you to delve into more specialized texts like Zeldovich & Raizer. The same goes for CFD. Although Anderson discusses computational aspects more than L&R, I think you're better off going from L&R to Toro's text if this is something you care about.That said, I would recommend Anderson's text for certain situations. If you are looking for more of the "flavor" of compressible flows, want to be able to solve a few problems and have the basic idea, but aren't so concerned about understanding all the mathematical nuances and don't plan on moving on to more advanced texts on the subject, get Anderson. Liepman & Roshko is an excellent part of a flow library, but Anderson is arguably a better one-stop basic reference.

The book is an excellent reference, and the text/printing is better than most Dover books. Amazon thought that throwing the book in a flat pack bubble wrap with other heavy objects was a good idea. The book arrived with a corner all messed up. It is like they do not care if an item arrives damaged. In the past Amazon has used these cardboard sort of sleeve things for books that are not perfect, but they are much better than just tossing the book in loose with other items. I need it for a class so i will have to live with it. A couple of days pressed under another few books should make it usable.

My professor recommends this book for its conciseness and depth. Due to the size of the book, it cannot cover all the details, but I think it covers all the theory well. This is the first book I pull to check some equations/theory for compressible flowThe downside is that there are no example problems, this is purely a reference text (not a learning textbook).

Haven't finished it yet. So far it's excellent. What these men went thru proving they are Americans is truly amazing. Their country turned its back to them but they didn't give up. They are true heros. It's s little piece of hidden history.

While the book is fiction based on historical events, they bring back poignant memories of my mother telling me of her experience while interned at Heart Mountain Wyoming. The book brings to the surface a heightened meaning to persevere; "ganbaru / ganbatte" as my mother would continually instill to us

I had relatives in this unit and this book gave me previously unknown insights into the life of a solider fighting in this unit. Great story!

This guide gave step by step, easy to follow directions for my daughter to set up her Dot. She loaned it back to me, so I could set up my Echo. Thanks for writing this, as I'm a visual learner and this guide really explained how to set up these devices.

So far I'm about 50% of the way through the book. Most of the content is stuff that you probably already know if you have read or watched reviews online already, but there are a few things I didn't know and a few things I had known but like having them organized in a nice way. My biggest problem with this book is that, since the author is not a native English speaker, there are *many* spelling and grammar mistakes that any spelling and grammar checker should have caught. The writing is good enough to understand the points he is making, but the mistakes make it hard to skim the text, which is probably how you are going to want to read the book. If I were paying full price for this book, I would expect the author to pay for an editor to correct those mistakes.

I bought this book on the basis of 4 stars but, in my view, it deserves only one or two. I just unexpectedly received a Echo Dot as a gift from my daughter and wanted a book to bring me up to some speed quickly, but this book doesn't do it for me. The author is French, but I'm not sure that his limitations with English, whatever they are, account for the disjointedness in the book. It's almost as though Delaoutre dictated the book in French off the top of his head into some French English translation system and then just printed the product out and put a cover on it. There are not infrequent misspellings, improper uses of pronouns, a general awkwardness in phraseology and even the printing is slipshod with very uneven right margins and lines which often end halfway across the page and words begin again on the next line down. Finally, I'm a "mature" user and am unfamiliar with a lot of the music services he names and their pluses and minuses. Perhaps young would-be aficianados of the Echo Dot or Echo who are already very familiar with the numerous sources of music would find the book useful. Delaoutre refers to his mother a few times in the book. I want the book he would write for her assuming she did not speak French. He skimped badly, in my opinion, in not securing the services of a competent editor.

Until very recently, my knowledge about Alexa and the Echo devices was less than minimal. Upon acquiring a Kindle 10 inch 2017 tablet with hands-free-Alexa, I started visualizing possibilities for using - Then I became curious about the Echo devices. I had been wanting a functional intercom system at home, and hoped I could use the devices for that as well as to answer some of my many questions, and to provide music on-the-fly ... for starters. I needed to become better informed, so I purchased several Kindle ebooks on Alexa and Echo and Echo Dot to achieve that purpose. I found THIS book to be the best of those I read about Alexa. It began with some narrative about the beginnings of Alexa and Echo ... and then continued to supply information about the way the devices worked, and to what purpose they could be used. I liked the writing style of the author - As if he were a good friend, sharing information he had so that I would feel comfortable in setting up and using this relatively new technology. There was no "talking down" to the reader, nor was there an overabundance of technical information that might simply cause confusion. I thought he struck a good balance in this regard. While it was obvious that English was not the first language of the author, I didn't find that to be a problem (I should write so well in another language?) The information was quite accessible, interesting and complete, and I found the book to be quite enjoyable. By the time I had finished reading the book, I felt well rewarded for the investment of my reading time and purchase price - I am now much better informed and am comfortable in selecting what is right for my needs, setting up the equipment, and knowing how to use it. I couldn't ask for more.Thank you, Quentin Delaoutre for your valuable help.

Pretty useless, nothing interesting.

Start here before investing in more expensive, third-party books about Alexa. Also, this book is a very good source of information about devices that work with Alex's, such as home automation devices. In most necessary cases, set-up instructions are provided. The 500 "Easter egg" question list at the back of the book is both instructive and fun.

Like all the other Alexa books written in 2016 (disregard "2017" in the title), before the new Echo Plus, this one talks about the need for a hub to set up your smart home. Echo Plus has one built in. That said, there was a lot of helpful guidance on getting started and much information on skills, many of which were by the author. Speaking of Quentin Delaoutre, although he knows a lot about Alexa, English is not his first language. That made it difficult, at times, reading his book, but I could still understand what he was saying. Delaoutre hosts a few web sites featuring Alexa skills and has a weekly email service offering various useful (and some playful) skills. These are all covered in his book.

Many times the guides that has no information that can't be gleaned from obscure sources like the product name. This guy knows his stuff and presents it nicely. Not a native English speaker but it rarely shows and doesn't get in the way. So good book. I recommend it if you are looking for something like this. Nice job Quentin.

This is yet another book in the series on the latest listening software on the market. You are not constrained on which device you own for this book. It is Alexa specific, and not device specific. If you are okay with having Amazon listen to your every thought - after you say the word Alexa, or Computer, or one other name that escapes me at the moment, then buy the device of your choosing, and read this book. It is the part Amazon left out when the provided the device. Their thinking was it is so intuitive that you do not need instructions beyond how to connect it a device of your choosing, and then download the Alexa App for your iOs or Android phone/tablet. Very Useful to have in a voice lesson. Easy to make a plan depending on your student ahead and adapt as you go.Not entirely certain I agree with some phrasing they use in addressing posture but this is minor, especially if you have done research on your own.An overall very useful tool. As a vocalist or instructor, it is definitely a tool worth the price.

So many warm-ups! I like how it's broken down into areas that may need help. At first it's a little intimidating to have so many warm-ups, but many of them can be used to trouble-shoot more then one problem area, so they repeat. my voice students have improved since we started using the warm-ups in this book.

Over a decade ago, I studied voice. Lately, in my community choirs, I've been dealing with vocal strain and endurance issues due to improper warmup. This book is excellent for creating a home warmup routine and finding exercises that are different than the ones I'm used to and address specific issues.

My students range from ages 9-15 and I really enjoy using the exercises in this book. I spend 10 minutes with each student at the start of our lesson just going through 2-3 exercises. They are very specific and also very creative. It's easy to find simple exercises for younger students, as well as more complicated exercises for experienced students. They play with breathing techniques, different vowel shapes, as well as different dynamics. I really like this and it helps my lessons go by quickly because there's so much material and ideas.

I am very pleased with this. I have lost my singing voice with age, and am trying to get it back. At first, I was using exercises by singing coaches on YouTube, and hesitated to get this book when they became boring and did not seem helpful enough. However, the multitude of more interesting exercises and variety in this book is invaluable, and I can choose what I need. I could never think of even a small fraction of these on my own and it would be silly to try. I do wish there was a CD for piano accompaniment, but I am entering exercises into the Finale songwriting program as I need them, and eventually can make my own CD to sing along to. Everybody is happy, except the cat.

If you have trouble coming up with exercises for yourself or others if you are teaching, this is spectacular! I use exercises in this for myself, as well as my students, and can already see the impact it is making.

I got this book to aid in teaching voice lessons. The exercises are fun and varried. The book is divided into sections depending on what kind of vowel they are looking at in that section. There are good breathing exercises, different kinds of vowel modifications, and good physical warmups for a choral setting. I am not a choral teacher, but they are still good physical wormups for younger students and those still learning about posture.Highly Recomended.

This book is great to use with high school students! You'll never be frustrated with trying to find just the right exercise to use! Highly recommend!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I appreciate how the gods and goddesses are presented within the context of Celtic mythology and culture, and even of specific locations and the land itself. This is not a fanciful description of all the attributes of various deities. It is an attempt to understand the complex relationship between these deities and the people and lands of the Celtic world. The book is full of fascinating research and well considered speculations by an author who has devoted many years of his life to understanding Celtic myth and magic. I highly recommend it to anyone who is serious about understanding the Celtic way of life and the Celtic relationship with magic.

The information is good. Not sure I agree with the way the information is presented or all the conclusions that are drawn. I suppose this is just preference. It is very well researched material and a fine edition to any collection of resources for Celtic mythology and information.

It is the author RJ Stewart need I say anymore, book is chockeful of information from a very well respected author.

Stewart organizes this book's research and commentary of the Celtic gods and goddesses in terms of his view of the "seven fundamental aspects of Celtic religion and culture": "the people, the Mother Goddesses, the Father Gods, the son and daughter divinities, the heroes, the kingship and the sovereign land and magical cosmology." Stewart, similar to author William Anderson, views these divine entities as living energies. The two chapters on Celtic Goddesses and Brighid/Minerva were the most helpful resources in this book for my research interests. I am a novice and wanted to learn about the celtic pantheon. This book provides an array of information and it's not as cut and dry as a beginner like me needs. I gave it 4 stars because the information is good, just not on my level.

This is an excellent book and a worthy addition to any collection of Celtic studies. It offers some unique insights that I haven't found anywhere else. Highly recommended.
