Persian Pilgrimages: Journeys Across Iran

From Publishers Weekly

Journalist Molavi begins the chronicle of his year-long journey through a land in perpetual turmoil by saying, "This is a book about Iran and Iranians." In the midst of America's war on terrorism and as America is faced with the very real possibility of a second war with Iraq, this is a timely read. Reflective and at times deeply personal, Molavi, who was born in Iran and now lives in Washington, D.C., poignantly reveals Iran and its history through the voices of the people he interviewed, including merchants, students, feminists, traditionalists, children and revolutionaries, as they speak on such subjects as poetry, campus politics, personal appearance, democracy, religion, war and the West. In addition to his descriptions of landmarks and monuments, Molavi makes comparisons to other writings on Iran. He takes readers much further beyond the scope of magazine and newspaper articles, leading them through his own discovery of his homeland. In the end, he leaves Iran a conflicted man, weighed down by his new knowledge of the people and himself. "Surely, it would not be the last time I visited Iran, but somehow, I felt melancholy.... Had I seen everything I needed to see? Had I talked to enough people? What was this sense of loss I felt?" Not only a portrait of a country and people, this is also a personal journey into a man's past and his future.Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

Iranian American journalist Molavi spent approximately one year (1999-2000) living in Teheran and exploring the country that his family had left more than 20 years before. As he traveled the well-known cities (Isfahan, Tabriz, Khoramshahr) two decades after the revolution, he simultaneously explored the rich historical and cultural past of his roots. Molavi discovers two schisms in the popular consciousness, the first between the pre-Islamic Persian Empire dating from 500 B.C.E. and the current Islamic Iran, the second between a genuine devotion to Islam in the street and a concurrent wish for a green card or visa to a Western country. Cities with historical or cultural significance give him a springboard to discuss Persian poetry, the greatness of Persia, and more recent history and its effects. Unlike Elaine Sciolino's Persian Mirrors, which summarizes her experiences reporting from Iran for over 20 years and many visits, this account is total immersion. Both paint a warm and positive picture of a people and a place that have recently been portrayed in the news as the "axis of evil" and as always hostile to the West. Suitable for public libraries. Afshin Molavi has successfully introduced a missing piece to the book market . His book provides a good answer to the repeatedly asked questions: Where is Iran? Who are Iranians? What did they do before the Revolution? These are the questions asked before the Televisin sets by millions of people witnessing the angry protesting crowds, the blindfolded hostages and the rows upon rows of graveyards shwoing the fallen in the Iran Iraq war. Millions of Iranians who after the 1979 Revolution have become scattered all around the world also face these questions.Unlike the Irish, The Scotts, or for thet matter Lebanese and Greeks, Iranians have not been an immigrating nation through the course of the history and therefore have not felt the need to produce introductory literature of any variety. Their history has been told first in the Bible and then by the Greeks and the Romans and later by the Arabs and Ottomans. Except for the Bible, the latter historians have not always been kind to them. Afshin Molavi, although exteremly briefly, has tried to provide answers and to put a personal touch to the history of a nation who has always been at the crossroads of the history, changed her name from Persia to Iran and has left her impression on the world affairs.Persian Pilgrimages has an easy and soft narrative attempting to reveal deeper realities. I reccomend it to those who wish to know more about life outside their own sphere.

This book is so good that I read it twice! The author is an Iranian born, American raised and educated journalist. As a young adult, he spends about a year in Iran, undergoing a series of "pilgrimages" around the country. He shares his experiences. This book covers many aspects of Iran: travel, history, culture, politics and the ongoing struggle for freedom and liberty. The author does a great job and is objective (or as objective as one can be). My only criticism is the book is a little dated now.

This is a well-written book that explains the complexities of Iran's contemporary history from the revolution to the present struggles of power. Molavi provides us thought-provoking glimpses into the fabric of Iranian life and politics. The book is well-written and erudite. It towers over similar books on Iran

There's a Persian poem by Molavi, the poet, written several centuries ago. It exposes you to how in Persian culture, "me" as a concept, is consered to be impolite.Someone's knocking on a door - and being asked who they are. "It's me" - is the repetitive response. The door remains firmly shut. Until finally, the knocker changes his respone: "It's you" and finds himself stepping into the house.I'm still looking for this poem as I only remember the sense of it. Today, I wanted to read up a little on Molavi, the poet, himself. I grabbed my "Persian Pilgrimages" knowing that I'm going to have an historic insight into my quest; one that would be interwoven with a contmeporary personal insight of Afshin Molavi's.And then it hit me, my Molavi's going to take me to the other Molavi ... What I enjoy most about this book is the fact that I know I shall be going back to it over and over in my life.

Love the storytelling and info that comes with the narrative.

I found this book very informative as I had planned a trip to Iran until the Bam disaster happened. As a non muslim I found the descriptions of life ,politics and religion and the synergy of the 3 (if synergy is the right word)intriguing. The book certainly helps me to understand this whole ME business a little better. However :WHAT SLOPPY WRITING!!!!! THe author s editors let him down badly. The numerous repetitions of insights and episodes , grammatical errors and spelling mistakes diminished my pleasure considerably and led to my low rating of an otherwise valuable addition to my library.

Many years ago I lived in Iran. My husband and I, both Americans, worked there for an NGO, (Nongovernmental Agency), and were able to travel throughout the country. Our daughter was born there and when we left Iran, I left a piece of my heart behind. I recently came across Afshin Molavi's "Persian Pilgrimages: Journeys Across Iran" in a bookstore, and I couldn't resist buying it. After reading the book I must say that it truly brought back so many visual images, unique experiences and memories of Iranian friends, their extraordinary hospitality and culture, and the political turmoil that existed - even back then. I feel like the author has given me a greater understanding of the land I learned to love. He has also updated me on how the country and its people have changed over the years...and how they have remained the same.Afshin Molavi, a young journalist and writer, was born in Iran and educated in the West. He returned to his homeland for a year, (1999-2000), to explore the many facets of Iranian society. Molavi states at the beginning of the book that his intent is to record the voices of Iranians, no matter what their politics may be. He traveled throughout the country, visiting many of the cities and towns that I knew, on a pilgrimage of sorts. Students of the right and left, bazaar merchants, Islamic clerics, pro-democracy journalists, taxi drivers, urban slum dwellers, village farmers, war veterans, partying teenagers, feminists, women who are pro and anti-veil (chador), political hard-liners and reformers all spoke openly and frankly to him and all have a voice in this wonderful journalistic-anthropological-travelogue.Molavi weaves a story of nearly 3000 years of Persian/Iranian history and reflects on Iran's present problems in light of its past. He takes us to the tomb of Cyrus the Great in Pasargad and to the exquisite rose gardens of the poet Hafez's shrine in Shiraz. We visit a shrine to Iran-Iraq War veterans and the Ayatollah Khomeini's mausoleum. A fascinating portrait of everyday life emerges from Iranians who sometimes hold diametrically opposing views. Molavi's Iranian heritage and knowledge have allowed him to penetrate the culture as no foreigner could. His Western background gives him the distance to report objectively. This book is a gem. I found it to be extremely well written, more informative than most books of this kind, and deeply moving at times. Highly recommended!JANA

About the Author

Drama teacher Suzi Zimmerman has helped her students win national awards in pageants and talent competitions. She's no stranger to performance! Zimmerman attended Kilgore College, home of the Texas Shakespeare Festival, on an acting scholarship and continued her education at Texas A&M University in Commerce, Texas. Zimmerman eventually founded Theatre Off the Wall, a small acting company, which evolved into her hometown's community playhouse. She found her true love in teaching, but at that time, there were few resources available for middle and high school drama teachers. To bridge the gap, she began collecting and designing her own creative, hands-on lessons and organizational forms and has published them into a collection of books. She has directed and appeared in over two hundred plays and has also appeared in dozens of TV commercials and industrial videos. She is currently a professional actor in US television commercials and films. She resides in Murphy, Texas.

It said 36 weeks of lessons - more like about 15 daily lessons with a lot of other stuff of little interest to my students. Had to supplement with my own stuff. The Improv activities and games are wonderful, however.

This book is an excellent tool for all three levels of theatre that I teach. It covers all aspects of theatre in an easy to follow format for my students. I've actually submitted this to my district to see if it can be adopted as our textbook for all middle school theatre classes.

This book has been a fabulous resource for our daughter as she has been working with her personal theatre tutor.

It was for school.

I teach at a charter school that offered Drama this year for the first time. As a Social Studies teacher (who is overly interested in the arts), I was excited when I found out I would be teaching the only block of Drama. Unfortunately, being a charter school, we don't have much money for resources. I managed to get lots of things donated through DonorsChoose, but actual teaching resources were not a part of that. After lots of research, this is the book I choose to go with and I am SO THANKFUL that I did! It covers ALL of the theatre basics! From vocabulary, to theatre direction, including genres and history of theatre! I bought the TE of this book through a competitor as Amazon did NOT have it available at the time (Lots of activities, games, quizzes/tests, etc are provided in it). If you are lost and looking for a good intro book, I absolutely recommend. Double check some of the crosswords and activities, though. The editors missed some things and there are some typos that may confuse the students.

If you are a teacher thinking about buying this book, beware! Unless you are buying each student in your class their own handbook, this book is not necessary. The Teacher's edition has the entire student handbook already included. I purchased this book and it was entirely unnecessary since I had purchased the Teachers edition thinking I needed both for my class. It has helpful activities, but nothing entirely spectacular, and nothing I couldn't have found on the internet for free.

The information is great, but the book is written in, on over 50% of the pages, rendering it almost useless to use with my class.

great
