Review

Praise for The Forgotten Book:"A satisfying and engrossing outing, this German import will leave readers thinking long after they’ve turned the final pages." ―The Bulletin"A clever book with winks at Jane Austen novels, this boarding school story will also delight fantasy fans." ―School Library JournalThe Forgotten Book German Edition:"Gläser writes in the tradition of beloved YA writers, such as Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl, Susan Cooper and J. K. Rowling. Her style is light and witty, and she is able to create a self-contained world that every reader will long to visit. . . . Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice may have been the starting point for Gläser, but she has turned the old material of enemies-turned-lovers into a charming new story. This book is an unexpected delight and a true page-turner.” ―New Books in German

I was really disappointed with this book. First, and most importantly, I had NO idea that it was based on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, despite the male protagonist's name being Darcy. I didn't really read the synopsis found online when I purchased this book, but instead read the synopsis on the book itself, which fails to mention a Jane Austen inspiration. This whole story fell flat, even though the actual storyline sounded very interesting. The characters were all very contrived and unconvincing. It felt like they were playing a part in a play and all they did was memorize the lines that they would recite automatically. The "ball" scene with Darcy, the "rain" scene where he declares his love for her, the best friend falling in love with her closest friend and then suddenly backing off, all of it just made me cringe so much, because it was done in an amateurish and disbelieving way.The story with the book that changes events and the different creatures (fairies, fauns etc.) was just...weird. I did stick with it because I wanted to see how it ends and I was definitely curious about the disappearance of Darcy's sister, but honestly...in a few weeks, I probably won't remember much of this book. It will be forgotten, just like the book this whole story revolves around.Shame. I went into it with very high expectations.

I usually shy away from translations but the book description was too much to resist. Whoever did the translation did an absolutely amazing job. The English is very colloquial, contemporary, and clever—none of the awkward, stilted prose you find in so many translations. I’d never have guessed this was translated. Story-wise, it reminded me of Harry Potter and Gail Carriger’s Finishing School series. I’m not really a Jane Austen fan, but thanks to my wife, I’ve endured every version of Pride and Prejudice known to man. The Jane Austen touches were subtle but evident. My only complaint is that it got a bit too talky at the end and I’d like to have seen more of the everyday school life at Stolzenburg, and a more thorough understanding of the supernatural elements. But perhaps there will be a sequel...

I feel the cover art makes this book appear a bit more “fluffy” than it is. Equal parts dark, mysterious, relatable, intriguing and current. My only comment would be it wrapped up a bit quick concerning one element of the mystery but other than that, the plot unfolded very organically. You’ll devour this book in a weekend!

Slow moving, predictable, not for me. The story and characters had real potential but it just fell flat. The cover is lovely, however, and feels great to hold in your hands. Looks lovely on the bookshelf, if that’s what you’re going for.

I read The Forgotten Book first from my Public Library and fell in love with this story. I ordered this and the Book Jumper, to read with my 10 year old daughter!

GREAT book after book 1 mystical

As The Forgotten Book has a line in its own synopsis saying it's a Jane Austen inspired story, I was on the lookout for that. I'm not sure I'd say there's any one Austen book that this one was inspired by because I saw elements of several. There's the overreaching one (Pride & Prejudice, of course) and some elements of Emma, such as some characteristics that The Forgotten Book Emma shared with Austen Emma, as well as her friend Hannah standing in for Harriet Smith. There's also a writer the girls talk about named Eleanor Morland whose surname is the same as that of the heroine of Northanger Abbey. An overused sort of line that I found unnecessarily repetitive was how, in the first few chapters, Emma was saying that her world was going to change the next day or how little did she know that everything was about to change. Those lines, with little to no difference between them, cropped up several times in the beginning of the book and it was an annoyance to hear them repeated so often and in such close proximity to the previous one.One thing I want to point out is that there are scenes of teenagers drinking, the main character to the point of drunkenness in one, and if you miss anything, do not forget that this book takes place in Germany and was originally written in German. The legal drinking age in Germany, as far as beer and wine goes, is 16. I admit that I forgot about the setting and was surprised by this, but a quick search revealed it's not the same as in the U.S. (my home country).I've never finished an Austen novel, but from what I have read, I have to say I could see similarities in the writing style then and in Glaser's here with The Forgotten Book, such as the social commentary and the heroine observing everything and everyone about her. Imitating a similar style and elements from some of Austen's books, there was still a lot of her own voice within the book, from the events that Emma participated in and instigated, as well as the modern air that translates well in this current reading experience. While there were some pacing issues, I was able to get round those rather quickly and settle down to enjoy the story. I'd recommend this book not only to fans of Glaser's The Book Jumper, but of classic Austen novels as well, plus anyone that loves a good fantasy adventure.I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The book started out with a jolt, moving on to develop the characters. That's when it began it's slide towards mediocrity. Luke was downright boring. I would imagine violins playing in my imagination as his character was developed.Ella was interesting in the beginning but in the middle of the story her personality did a 180. She became detestable, killing innocent people, Including children. The only enjoyable character came at the end of the story with the introduction of Dan Borowski. For me, I wish I hadn't plowed through it. There will never be enough time to read all of the good books we have to choose from.

A very sad story and quite strange. This reader has difficulty with the characters, they are poorly developed and the interactions between them is hazy at best. The "why" we do things is not developed at all. Bizarre.

How disappointing... a really gripping and riveting first 40 pages or so, then... deadness. Once they arrive in Switzerland the book is basically over. I nearly gave up reading several times, I kept expecting excitement to return, but it never did. The coldness of Ella, the still undeveloped ending explaining why things happened the way they did simply never occurred. I'm not sure it even rates 3 stars. I'm being generous because the beginning was so strong. But how did this get so many 4 and 5 stars?

Glad I only read a few reviews before I read this book .I enjoyed it. It wasn't my favorite Wignall book, but I did appreciate how he handled most of the characters .I did want to keep turning the pages. I went back and read all of the reviews to this date. The reviews have made me aware of how easy it is to spoil the book, for those who haven't read it yet. I'm going to be more careful in the future to reread my review before I submit it. If I wouldn't want to have this information before I read the book, I'm writing Spoiler Alert in the title of my review.

I didn't finish this book. I didn't like the back and forth between Ella's situation and Lucas's attempts at redemption with his daughter. Pick a plot and stick to it please! I especially didn't like the way Ella's personality took a turn in seeking revenge. About 2/3 of the way through I skipped through to the end to see what happened. Glad I didn't waste anymore time slogging through it.

I felt that this book was a lot shorter than the movie led us to believe. The movie can't have been memorable or i don't remember the ending. However the abrupt ending with the plot twist were a nice touch. There is great but short prose as if the author was writing a draft. He intentionally only develops the bare minimum characters required to tell his story.I wondered why 17 readers highlighted the introduction of the two lead detectives. I realise now that that was the fullest those two characters would be developed. In fact, the law detective is not seen again from that point. There was allusion to Luke's ability to influence police investigations. That plot line was either unexplored or removed. All in all this book read like one of those Wikipedia articles that tell you the entire movie but title the section, synopsis. I am glad there is a !love for this book otherwise it would monumentally suck.

This book strangely enough lacked humanity except from Lucas, the hired killer. The character of Ella did not seem well developed-going from tragedy to a complete change whereas the character of Lucas saw growth. There is a lot of violence but not much warmth and emotions, lacked adequate plot development. Left me cold.

Treading carefully with her tone, she said, "Lucas?" She caught his eyes in the rearview and felt confident enough to proceed. "Why did you shoot him in the head?" "He was wearing body armor." "How do you know?" "Because he didn't bleed enough when I shot him the first time."Ella Hatto and Stephen Lucas (FOR THE DOGS)The above snippet of conversation between Ella and Lucas gives you an idea of what kind of man Lucas is. He's well-read, introspective, dispassionate, and deadly. Too, he is trying to retire from being a "killer for hire" and hoping to live a normal life. The kind of life he could have had with Madeleine, the only woman he has ever truly loved, and the daughter he has never seen.FOR THE DOGS is interesting in that the reader is drawn into the story and sees the gradual transformation of both Ella and Lucas, the two main characters. He finds what he needs. She gets what she deserves, and more. This is the first book by Kevin Wignall I've read and will soon begin reading his debut novel PEOPLE DIE. While I am a big fan of Stephen Leather's action packed books, Wignall could become one of my favorite British writers.

About the Author

Born February 2, 1905, Ayn Rand published her first novel, We the Living, in 1936. Anthem followed in 1938. It was with the publication of The Fountainhead (1943) and Atlas Shrugged (1957) that she achieved her spectacular success. Rand’s unique philosophy, Objectivism, has gained a worldwide audience. The fundamentals of her philosophy are put forth in three nonfiction books, Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology, The Virtues of Selfishness, and Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal. They are all available in Signet editions, as is the magnificent statement of her artistic credo, The Romantic Manifesto.

#60,102 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

A few years ago, after living through the worst presidency I've witnessed, that of Bush 43, I began to pay more attention to econo-political ideas. I was a moderate leftist, believing that conservatives and their Wall St partners had bankrupted the world economy. I was very receptive to liberal criticisms of so-called capitalism and the profit motive as the conduit for the greed that led to the aforesaid bankruptcy. It really seemed to me that the only solution was a more stringent regulatory environment. Looking back on it, I can still understand why I believed as I did.Somewhere along the line, I began to start questioning my beliefs. I went back to school to earn an MBA and learned more about finance and economics. I hypothesized my own views about all this as though I were a business owner or CEO, facing turbulent market conditions. Then I noticed something. No business owed me a job, no gov't agency owed me survival, no one else owed me anything. In simple terms, my needs place no justifiable moral obligation on anyone else.Although I was familiar with this book, I felt for a long time that I wasn't ready for it. Should all those liberal beliefs I'd adopted turn out to be wrong? In some ways, no. I was still sure that bigotry and nationalism weren't defensible. In basically every other way, yes. Liberal economic ideas are, once you're honest about policy ideas, fully indefensible.Conservative or liberal leaning, I definitely recommend one take the ideas advanced in this book seriously. Consider them and be honest with yourself. The most extraordinary idea for me is that the cause of most of the problems of which we lament is the same regulatory power we hope will fix them. After this I'll be studying economic history of this regulatory environment to determine if/how it led to market imbalances and distorted incentives. So long as gov't has legal power over commerce, crony capitalism (NOT REAL CAPITALISM) will never end. Yet I'm curious to see how the regulatory machinery may create more problems than it solves. For now, I'd consider myself tentatively in favor of laissez faire capitalism.I can also fully recommend the blog talk radio podcast of Dr Yaron Brook. It's a very thought provoking show for those tired of being locked into the outdated liberal-conservative buckets.

This is a 5 star book to understand the philosophy of Capitalism and the horrors of other systems. It does not endeavor to explain capitalism nor should it. I'm not sure Adam Smith felt the same way as Ayn Rand about "why" capitalism is so virtuous, but his book is better to understand the foundations of the system. Rand helps understand why it is better than any other. I believe that she also understood the need for government and implicit in that is "a mixed economy." Once you have government protecting any right of free man, it will infringe on what someone else feels is his/her right. If you have no basis in philosophy, this book can be cumbersome, full of "-isms" and "-ibilities." It is fun and educational whether you believe in capitalism or not.

Published 60 years ago this year, this book is still relevant not only because of Ayn Rand's deep insight, but despite all the social and technological changes the world has seen, much of the same machinery is in place.Ayn explains the flaws with critiques of capitalism and how they often aren't rational, why the 'capitalism' of today isn't the capitalism she advocates, why aiming to profit by taking advantage of others isn't congruent with capitalism, and why the laissez faire capitalism she *does* advocate is based on goodwill and justice, not deceit and plunder. As such, she presents capitalism as an economic system almost as an aside: she focuses on it as a moral system, and tells you why it's superior to its predecessors and various alternatives. While there are a few things out of place, and the overall philosophy isn't perfect, this book presents a powerful case for why laissez faire capitalism should be the bedrock of a peaceful, rational society.

The chapter What is Capitalism takes one back a bit, because it goes into the roots of why in any free or semi-free society, we must have property rights and individual rights to trade, i.e. capitalism. The chapter, The Roots of War is completely brilliant, and should be required reading in public schools IMO. More could have been said about how EVERY market is ALREADY regulated by supply and demand, and all gov regulations can possibly do is offer counter-orders to the inescapable laws and effects of demand and supply, mucking up how free markets regulate themselves in various brilliant ways. (There is no such thing as an unregulated market). Another example, not only are monopolies not possible in a free market, (a point driven ad nauseam by libertarians), but it's also true that shortages and surpluses are impossible, as these can only occur when price controls are instituted by economically illiterate bureaucrats. (Realize that shortages and scarcity are two different things). Shortages will cause scarcity, but scarcity CANNOT cause shortages in a free market. The chapter The Property Rights of Airwaves seems a bit out of place and an academic exercise that's a bit irrelevant. For anyone interested in how free markets self-regulate, I recommend The Government Against The Economy, by economist George Reisman. A brilliant short book. 'Not to be confused with his magnum opus titled Capitalism.
