I read the original and loved the story, so I got this one for my young nephew and read it. What amazing writing style to keep readers interested in such a heroic event. Now days everything is technology and this would never happen; which makes this story all the more incredible. Get the book, curl up and enjoy an incredible story about an incredible man!!

This was for my Kennedy colllection

John F. Kennedy is best remembered as the 35th President of the United States. But prior to that, JFK answered the call of duty and served in the Navy during World War II. In Harm’s Way, by Iain Martin, is the story of his service during the war.Like many men of the Greatest Generation, JFK answered the nation’s call to service. As a wealthy young man in New England, JFK grew up spending weekends on the water. It was only appropriate that he chose to join the United States Navy.JFK served as a PT Boat commander in the South Pacific until August 1, 1943 when PT 109 sank during combat operations. For the next few weeks, the crew of PT 109 evaded the Japanese until they were assisted by friendly locals who helped coordinate a rescue by the American Navy.Martin expertly covers the journey from JFK’s college days at Yale through his rescue and remaining service in the Navy. I loved that Martin used a blend of the historical facts and personal anecdotes to connect the readers with the type of man that Jack Kennedy was. Along with historic photographs and maps, Martin added in contemporary photographs. Scholastic Press did an outstanding job of producing a great story and visually pleasing book.Prior to reading the book, I was familiar with JFK’s service as a PT boat commander and the subsequent disaster aboard PT 109. Martin managed to surprise me with a few new facts about the story. I had no idea that JFK’s dad used his influence to get his son a safe headquarters job during the war – and that JFK had to fight for a spot in the PT boat program despite his father’s powerful political connections. Readers who are very familiar with JFK’s service may still learn a fact or two about JFK’s fascinating story.The book was an engrossing story and very easy read – it was so good I finished it in an afternoon. Martin offers something for everyone. His book is a great primer for readers who are new to the story, yet he still manages to surprise the readers familiar with JFK’s story with new facts.

No purchase. Library book. Great read. Good author. Young adult book. Good photos. Gave me lots of background info I was unaware of. Always a JFK fan. Now even moreso. Easy read and well worth the time. Great leader and great overall human being. We need more like JFK now. Interesting details you probably never knew of the whole incident.

Bought this for my son and he loved it. Highly recommended for young readers

'My God,' you find yourself saying again and again, 'so that is what that was all about.'Boebert and Blossom lay out their terms in an introductory chapter. They are going to discuss the Deepwater Horizon as a "system," they say, a system so complex that no one individual or entity truly understood it. They will not be looking for a root cause of the disaster. Rather, they say, the blowout was a result of a combination of decisions, actions and component attributes rather than the result of a single act or failure.Moreover, they are going to be taking a "scholarly" rather than a "judicial" approach to the evidence, since their goal is to understand, rather than to place blame. For this reason, none of the actors is named, even when they are as easily identifiable as the chief executive of British Petroleum at the time of the disaster.Remarkably--given these and other narrative (or anti-narrative) decisions--Deepwater Horizon is an engaging and ultimately gripping read, at first illuminating and then impossible to put it down, even if you do have to go to work the next day.To me one of the most fascinating elements of this story is how little information the crew on the rig actually had about what was happening more than a mile beneath them at the bottom of a hole in the ocean floor. The authors explain that, as far as physics is concerned, the well is essentially a big U-shaped tube stuffed with heavy drilling mud to prevent lighter hydrocarbons from rising to the surface prematurely. The crew monitored the hidden state of the well by comparing the amount of mud they were pushing down to the amount coming back up.So mud is the ground truth, the ultimate finger on the pulse of the well. But during the procedure that led to the blowout--a crucial test of the integrity of the cement seal at the bottom of the well--the mud loggers couldn't, or thought they couldn't, monitor the volume of mud in the storage pits because other crew members were moving the mud from storage pit to pit before transferring it overboard.What's worse, nobody did the predictive well-control calculations that would have showed the procedure they were undertaking would bring the well close to the edge; the point where the push of the mud would be unable to oppose the shove of the hydrocarbons. Nobody, in other words, was saying I'm not going to do something I don't understand, and everyone was just following orders in the belief that someone else understood.Boebert and Blossom are right to insist are no heroes and no villains in this tragedy. Nobody quit his job to prevent the disaster but nobody acted maliciously either. But everyone who has ever worked in a large organization will recognize two 'types' in the story: those who know what they are doing and those who don't.The person you hope is sitting next to you is a senior guy with a lot of experience, "the ability to draw conclusions from incomplete and conflicting information" and "the moral fiber to act." A few of them turn up in Deepwater Horizon, asking inconvenient questions and refusing to proceed until conditions are met (we've all been in that meeting, silently cheering them on). But the system rolls over them: They are bypassed, or don't have the authority, or are given the day off.In any case they are vastly outnumbered by the other guys, the ones who don't care or don't care enough, who are just doing a job, just trying to get by. There's the vendor's rep who was known for 'just in time delivery' of test results, thereby depriving other people of the time to think them through; or the guy who created a design document consisting of lots of canned output by pushing the "generate report" button on the computer. We've all worked with people like this. silently fixed the broken things they leave in their wakes and fervently hoped never to work with them again.What matters in the end, however, what saves the reader and comforts her, despite her smoldering anger at the stupidity of it all, is the narrative voice: the calm, thorough, persistent, intelligent voice of the authors and their unstated code of respect for competence, for intellectual honesty, and for taking responsibility.To some extent what happened on the Deepwater Horizon was technology specific. For a science writer like me, one of the pleasures of this book is clarity of the descriptions of deep-water drilling technology, the many technical illustrations, and the appendices on topics such as cementing mechanisms or low returns during displacement. It's not really possible to understand what happened without getting into the details.On the other hand, the Deepwater Horizon is also a type, or exemplar, of the many sporadically lethal "systems" that are part of our lives today-- such as the U.S. heath-care system, the Internet, the U.S. government, and the global climate system--all of which we seem hell-bent on running close to the edge.We would all be better off is more of us thought, when we were under pressure to go forward assuming the best, that one day someone might write a book like this one about what we were doing.

Accidents in complex systems often have root causes that stem from organizational or even cultural problems. This analysis of the Deepwater Horizon disaster steps back to examine the context for this "emergent event". The details of rig operations and onboard decision-making ring true from my limited experiences, but more importantly, the generalities of disorganization, miscommunication, and human psychology are applicable to systems far beyond the oil industry.

While the book itself is commendable, the KINDLE presentation is awkward. The only suggestion for the authors is that a page or so with the frequently used abbreviations would be helpful. Otherwise the book was quite well done.

The authors of this book do a fine job of explaining exactly what went wrong with the Deepwater Horizon. It's easy to read and understand, and I found it to be fascinating. They apply a thorough, rigorous approach to analysing every single factor that led to the Macondo well blowout and subsequent destruction of the Deepwater Horizon rig. As with most things on life, things were not as simple as they seemed, and the causes of the accident were numerous. I thought the authors did a really fantastic job and the book was worth the high price. I read it on the Kindle and the diagrams were easily readable.

Not an entertaining book. It read like a documentary. Mom

I'm used to reading science fiction and fantasy, so this book is reading more like a text book, at least to me. I know the author is the reason for the purchase. It is interesting reading, some of the facts mentioned, I don't recall being mentioned by the news during the actual event.

This book gives an excellent review of the artists and the lady manager Mrs. Potter Palmer. The fact Mrs. Palmer was able to create a "Women's Building" and feature women artists testifies to her status and clout. It is very well written with masses of details on the women and the art.

In "Women Building History: Public Art at the 1893 Columbian Exposition", Wanda M. Corn examines “the large group of women who founded, administered, designed, and decorated the Woman’s Building” at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair (pg. 5). She continues, “That the 1893 Woman’s Building of 1893 is a milestone in the history of American art is reason enough for a closer examination of its entire decorative program. Not only was it the first occasion on which MacMonnies, Cassatt, and other women were able to work on a grand scale, but it was their last and only opportunity to fulfill a public commission. Furthermore, it was the only artistic event of the century in which women, in a loosely formed collective, decorated an entire hall” (pg. 9). She further argues that these images and their rhetoric “contributed to the woman’s emancipation movement at the end of the nineteenth century” (pg. 10). Corn continues, “It would fall to women artists at the Fair to wrest the female body from the male gaze and make it speak to woman’s work, intelligence, and emancipation” (pg. 10). Finally, Corn argues that women’s imaginations were “determined by the separatists activities of the sexes in Gilded Age American culture and the discourses that swirled around late nineteenth-century woman’s culture” (pg. 17). Corn draws extensively upon the work of Robert Rydell and Gail Bederman.Corn argues, “Women were highly conscious that they were speaking in a separate voice from that of their male colleagues. They produced a woman-centered history of the past and present, a brazen counternarrative to the technological story told so often by men” (pg. 20). While male artists used women as subjects in allegory, “women artists, in contrast, recognizing that classical allegory was embedded in masculinist discourses and Victorian binaries, gravitated to new ways of representing their sex in public decorations” (pg. 45). Corn further argues, “The birth of officially sanctioned woman’s buildings at American international fairs was tightly embedded in the debates that raged around women’s issues and gender equality in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Emblematic of the waves of American women seeking a broad range of reforms benefitting their sex, such buildings were typically proposed, organized, and administered by middle- and upper-class white women” (pg. 65). Further, “The Woman’s Building of 1893 was one of the places where women of different political persuasions learned to work side by side, an important step along the arduous path the universal suffrage” (pg. 70). Corn continues, “If women were going to have a pictorial history that featured them, it would have to be invented. The women decorators would have to take the lead stories of the Fair – Progress, Evolution, Modern Civilization – and change their perspective from male to female, telling ‘her-story’ rather than ‘his-story’” (pg. 97). As an example, Corn writes, “Removing modernity from the center of women’s lives was one way in which post-Victorian artists collectively revised the earlier generation’s priorities and demonstrated a widespread desire to redefine woman’s capabilities and enlarge her sphere of activity” (pg. 99).Of the artists, Corn writes, “These artists created American girls who did not just dream of a better future but performed new ways of being female. By giving modern young women an inner self but also desires and ambitions, these muralists participated in the formation of a new female identity. They helped formulate the modern ‘American girl,’ as she was called at the time, a young woman enjoying a sustained period of growth between childhood and marriage” (pg. 122). Typically, I find that a lot of plumbing apprentices and even some skilled foremen have a hard time understanding venting. I have also noticed that new plumbing system designers will either do one of thee things: 1. They will under-vent a drainage system. 2. They will add illegal flat vents below the flood level rim of fixtures, (especially floor drains and floor sinks in commercial kitchens and mechanical rooms). or 3. They will over-vent a drainage system by venting every single fixture. For example, in a row of 8 water closets I have seen a vent placed on every single water closet. This is not only unnecessary, because it does not enhance system performance, but it is also more expensive to install. Instead of venting every single water closet, why not use a circuit vent? Don't understand circuit venting?... This book explains it in awesome detail.Bob Scott has done an excellent job of explaining plumbing venting in this book. He uses many isometric drawings to clearly show how each type of vent system works. He also uses pictures taken from actual job sites to show common mistakes, and the correct field installations. His descriptions and wording are clear and concise. You will have a much better understanding of venting after you study this book.Bottom line: If you are a plumber, plumbing designer, plans inspector, or building inspector, I would strongly recommend that you purchase this book. This is also an excellent companion to the ICC Plumbing Code Commentary. Knowledge of the craft is what separates your average plumber from a valuable and quality tradesmen. Don't hesitate, buy this book!

You know when you are talking to yourself in your head and no one else is listening but you keep talking anyway? Well, that is the vibe I got when I read most of these short stories and I loved it!I normally don’t gravitate towards short stories, but something about the cover made me look into this book. After I read the first two chapters I knew I liked them, but since it wasn’t an ongoing story I felt something was holding me back. But, as I started whipping through each story within 20 – 40 minutes, I realized I craved the next. I kept asking: where is author, Curtis Sittenfeld, going to go to next?To me, the overall theme was that each character was in their own head. They were concerned with what they thought outside perceptions would expect (or sometimes outcomes they were hoping for) that they completely misread situations. Some would come to realize that, some would not.The writing was authentic and relatable. Although the stories were short they packed the necessary punch to keep you engaged. After I finished each story I would think of each character “where are they now?” The cool thing about this book is that I can create the answer to that question in my own head; since aren’t we all in our own heads…see what I did there?! Is it still funny if I must point it out? Don’t answer that.This is the first Curtis Sittenfeld book I have read and certainly not the last.

Curtis Sittenfield is a delightful satirist and assured storyteller as well as an underrated political writer. "You Think It" isn't billed as a "Trump book," nor is it, but so many of these stories show the conundrums---social, sexual, professional---of this singular political moment. I could imagine reading this again ten years from now and thinking, "Yes, that's what it was like!"In all of her books, Curtis Sittenfield does such a superb job of capturing the awkward and occasionally exhilarating dance of gender relations, and there's much of the same here, though the subject is often marriage or post-marriage. As a now-married read and longtime fan, it's been a delight to "grow up" with Curtis. I'm roughly the same age as her and read "Prep" when I was just distant enough from high school to be able to laugh at it while also remember it well. I feel lucky to have Curtis Sittenfield bringing the same gimlet-eye to early middle age, its vanities and resentments and small victories. If satire can also be cozy and comforting, this is it.

Perfectly-cut gems—they refract the light of truth, and sparkle with life. Curtis Sittenfeld definitely knows a certain swath of humanity intimately (the whiter-than-white portion), and reveals it so well I marveled and cringed simultaneously. I'd read and enjoyed "Prep", but not enough to want to read everything Sittenfeld wrote (whereas Amor Towles or Charles Bukowski or Louise Fitzhugh or Raymond Carver etc, I became obsessed with). Her style and eye work perfectly in short form.

I'm a huge CS fan, and this didn't disappoint! I had read some of these stories before (in the New Yorker), but I read again because they're that good. I don't know how she gets into the nitty gritty of life and thoughts and conversations the way she does. She's so graceful about it, but it isn't pretentious. The only hard part was rationing the stories out b/c I didn't want to finish too quickly. If you're a CS fan, absolutely read this. It's vintage her.

I usually don't read many short stories. With this being a pick for one of my Goodreads groups a while back,I decided to give this collection a chance. I have taken quite a while to finish,but it was easy to just read one story at a time then go back to books with more pressing deadlines.Each story was a gem. None turned out as I expected. I feel short stories are harder to write as so much has to be captured in less.

This book is incredible. I have been a fan of Sittenfeld since I read Prep (50 times) and then I went back and read Man of My Dreams and have since pre-ordered every book she's every written. Some of her books have disappointed me (Sisterland and Eligible) but this one was right up there with American Wife and Prep. Every single story ended too soon, I wanted more. I found things I loved and hated (but yet related to) about every character. Every short story was a page turner. I devoured this book. I highly recommend it.

Some of the stories were entertaining but all in all I didn’t care for this book. I am not a Hillary supporter and I don’t see humor in our President. Most of these stories read as though the author is suffering from resentment from early adulthood. Each story has some kind of getting even. It became boring and old. Sorry I spent the money on it.

This book is not good, the author tries to include a lot of imagery that ends up feeling like nonsense details that don’t add any real flavor to the stories. It’s also a choppy read; not a difficult one, but it’s hard to stay focused. Aside from that, the actual substance of the stories told just weren’t my cup of tea. Sometimes I can overlook sloppy writing if the story is interesting, was not the case for me

I received this book in the prime book box and I really don't like it. It doesn't seem to be written with the intention of being read aloud to a toddler. I don't think it translates well, if that makes sense, and there isn't much to it. I'm surprised at the other good reviews but I was not a fan at all.

This book is adorable! My kids both love it...a little too much. I made the mistake of purchasing the hardcover version the first time around and my little one ripped a few pages. So I bought the board book this time around and they're happily flipping through it. The pictures are really cute and self explanatory so even though they can't read yet, they know what's happening based on the pictures. ^_^

We got this as part of the Prime book box. We were not impressed. It’s rather boring and just doesn’t flow. My toddler always asks me to pick a different book before I even get to the third page. My kids prefer books with more words and rhymes. Other kids may enjoy though!

This book makes my tiny human happy. Found at library first and tried rechecking out but people suck and it hasn't been checked back in yet. Got her this and now I never stop reading it...

great book! my 20 month old loves it and I love reading it! It's a nice length (not too short, not too long) and not too many words on the page so the action keeps moving along.

I have purchase many of Joyce Wan's books, and this is another one of our favorites. My daughter loves reading this every day, and gets a kick out of all of the different expressions the little kid has throughout the book. She also loves counting the whales right inside of the front cover, and the bears inside of the back cover.

A charming picture book that is just the right amount of tongue-in-check, perfect for parents who will be reading this one over and over again.

The illustrations and text are PERFECT in this debut picture book. It made me chuckle more than a few times, especially when the little boy's expressions changes throughout the book. I also love the detail that Joyce clearly pours into her work - this is evident by the wall of pictures the little boy passes as he runs to the pool from the house.The book is also a great visual representation of the challenges that children face everyday. These are the types of challenges that adults might sometimes dismiss quickly as not important or really not an issue, but in a child's mind they can be of whale sized proportions.Ultimately, this is a must buy picture book as it is entertaining on so many levels.

After reading (and reviewing) Darwin's First Theory, this well illustrated book duplicates Darwin's travels around South America and lesser locations like the Falklands, Tasmania, Galapagos Islands, and atolls in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The author weaves Darwin's discoveries, interpretations, and subsequent writings to provide an appreciation of the enormity of his work to evolutionary biology during the early years of the voyage of the Beagle. I much appreciated the author's development of how the fossil finds of megafauna contributed to the mutability and plasticity of species. The pictures and diagrams are much needed and dutifully provided. This is not the answer to all the topics provided but is a great introductory reading to a young Darwin and his contributions. But everyone must be captivated by 12 ft tall sloths and 10 ft long armadillos. The close of the last ice age ended an amazing array of mammals that had witnessed early humans as they entered South America 10,000 years ago. Unlike in fossil finds in North America, apparently only a single instance definitely places a human artifact with megafaunal death (in Brazil). Another surprise is the amount of Darwin's collections that have been lost since his voyage. A sizable chunk was destroyed during the Blitz but much has simply been misplaced. Unlike his early collections, the thoughts and theories they helped to produce continue on.

Most people think of Darwin in connection with the living creatures of the Galapagos, but he had studied geology and fossils in college, and spent considerable time in South America exploring fossil sites and noting the sequential transformations of various creatures--laying a critical foundation for his theory of evolution. This volume is well-illustrated and provides a compelling introduction to Darwin's thought processes. Recommended to fans of science, especially biology and evolutionary theory.

Charles Darwin is arguably the most important biologist, and perhaps scientist, in history. His most important contribution is not evolution, but the removal of miraculous, supernatural intervention from science. This was produced by a man, religious in his youth, but transformed by the study of the facts of nature that only experienced field work can provide. (This is also true of Alfred Wallace.) This transformation took place over many years, and was seeded by his experiences and discoveries on the Beagle.Most biographies of Darwin emphasize his development as a biologist, and this is clearly important. But at the start of the voyage, Darwin was primarily a geologist. And it was as a geologist that he sought out rocks and their contained fossils, the discoveries that triggered the idea that species 'evolved' over time. Living species reflect similar form and function as the fossils he was finding.When Darwin returned to England, he was already famous ... as a geologist. The specimens he sent back to London during the voyage had been examined by experts, and reported at the various royal societies. Yet such was the social and religious resistance to this idea that it was 20+ years before he was able to publish 'The Origin of Species'.So it is extremely important to understand the historical context of the fossils Darwin obtained during the voyage. This book fills a gap in the Darwin time line that is often mentioned only in passing. And I would add that the book is written by a scientist for readers with a strong scientific interest. Technical terms are not simplified, e.g. Gomphotherium.I love this book ... good, important science, well written, and respectful of the reader's intelligence.

Many of the creatures that produced the fossils were previously unknown to Darwin and the world’s naturalists, so the fossils were of great interest to both the general public and the scientific community.The book is profusely illustrated with photos of actual fossils (some are still on display in the world’s museums), of contemporary drawings of what the creatures probably looked like, and of Darwin and his contemporaries.

3.5 starsI think most people who know something of Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution know it was in some way inspired by his study of finches and their beaks. Adrian Lister's book seeks to shine a light on how his study of fossils while traveling on the Beagle in South America and the South Pacific contributed as well. Darwin not only found a great deal of prehistoric mammals and marine fossils, but he also was able to figure out how coral atolls formed. And Lister is able to point out how his study of these items would have influenced his thinking in regards to evolutionary science.For me the book was at its best when recounting the history of Darwin's travels. It bogged down, however, when it got into the detail of some of the mammal fossils and why each was significant or different from what was previously known. I don't doubt Lister is correct in his assessment on how those travels shaped and influenced Darwin's thinking and helped him to unravel the mysteries of evolution, but... I just didn't find it compelling or more than merely interesting.

Somehow I managed to get through a decade of collage without knowing any of this so was pleasantly surprised to encounter so much more depth to Darwin. Well written, this book is both intelligent and accessible. It doesn't bore the reader yet also provides ample background and explanations. Speaking only for myself, this is SO much more interesting than the work into finches and other tired old studies normally associated with Darwin. Great addition!
